This Behind The Scenes E.T. Casting Video Will Make You Cry

3 November 2014 5:27 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Casting child actors can be a very tricky business, but choosing a lead actor wound up being a rather simply decision for the filmmakers behind E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial back in 1982. Sure, they had to do a bit of hunting in pre-production to find the right kid to play Elliott in the film, but as soon as Henry Thomas finished his audition it became readily apparent that there was no real other choice for the part. Why? Watch the video below and find out: This little short was created by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as part of their series of Academy Originals, and the story featured is pretty fantastic . highlighted by video from Henry Thomas. audition. Told to improvise a scene between Elliott and an official from Nasa trying to take E.T. away, Thomas stunned Steven Spielberg and the casting directors by becoming amazingly emotionally »

Henry Thomas's tearful audition for E.T. is well known, and in a new Academy Originals video Marci Liroff explains how the team behind E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial got to that moment in which Steven Spielberg could say, "Okay, kid, you got the job."  Liroff explains that they had focused on another boy who they thought would play Elliott, and had found most of the kids to play his friends. But they wanted to see how the kids would interact, so they invited them over to the writer Melissa Mathison's house to play Dungeons & Dragons. "In about three minutes it »

The Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences has released a new episode of their fantastic web-series Academy Originals. I've really enjoyed what they've been doing by giving movie buffs a behind the scenes look at the stories behind the films that we love.

This latest episode gives us the story behind how Henry Thomas was cast in the lead role of Elliott in Steven Spielberg's classic film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. It turns out Thomas wasn't Spielberg's first choice to take on the role, and it was all thanks to a game of Dungeons & Dragons that lead to Thomas' legendary audition that won him the part.

The video features a recount of how everything came together as told by casting director Marci Liroff

The Art Of John Alvin review

20 August 2014 6:28 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

One of the greatest poster illustrators ever gets a volume devoted to his work. Here's Ryan's review of the lavish Art Of John Alvin...

In 2008, John Alvin died at the tragically young age of 59, robbing the world of one of its finest poster designers. Although his signatures were often erased from his artwork, Alvin's individual style rang out from every image he produced: his work for movies such as E.T., Blade Runner, Cocoon and Short Circuit displayed a keen eye for colour, space and proportion.

Although technically gifted, it was Alvin's talent for crystalising a film's subject tone in a single, clear image that really set him apart from other illustrators. His best posters often focused on one or two objects suspended against an expanse of sky or stars, such as the alien and child's fingers touching in his poster for E.T., or the silhouette of a boy in Empire Of The Sun. »

'Atari: Game Over' Trailer Goes Searching for Buried 'E.T.' Video Game

29 July 2014 3:56 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in April, we reported that filmmaker Zak Penn helped lead an expedition to the New Mexico desert to unearth hundreds of unsold E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial video game cartridges that were buried decades ago in a landfill. That journey is chronicled in the first trailer for the upcoming documentary Atari: Game Over.

Zak Penn directs this film that explores the meteoric rise of video game pioneer Atari, and their colossal failure that was the E.T. video game, which was rushed into production to be available for purchase by Christmas time, after spending a massive $21 million for the rights. The game is widely considered to be the worst of all time, selling just 1.5 million copies, leading to the urban legend that Atari literally buried 14 dump trucks of E.T. cartridges in an Alamogordo, New Mexico landfill in 1983, the remains of which were dug up just a few months ago. 15 Fun Facts About E.T.: The Extra-terrestrial

14 July 2014 12:30 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Steven Spielberg's E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial was one of the very first movies that I ever saw in theaters. It was a magical movie going experience that I'll never forget. It has been 32 years since this movie was released, and there's so much about it that I didn't know until I put together this list of trivia for you to browse through. Here are 15 fun facts about E.T., some of which you might not know about.

Steven Spielberg shot most of the film from the eye-level of a child to further connect with Elliot and E.T. With the exception of Elliot's mom, no adults' faces are shown until the last half of the film. Most of the full-body puppetry was performed by a 2' 10 tall stuntman, but the scenes in the kitchen were done using a 10-year old boy who was born without legs but was an expert on walking on his hands. »

Kids' Movie Quotes: The Most Iconic, Memorable, and Repeated Lines in Movie History

27 June 2014 2:00 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Kids say the darnedest things! Isn't that what Bill Cosby taught us back in the 1990s? Well, the legendary comedian was right, obviously, especially when it comes to memorable movie quotes. We wanted to take a look back through the decades at some of the most hilarious, touching, unforgettable lines said by kid characters (most are live-action, but there are a few animated characters too). We even asked some of our friends and readers what their favorites were and came up with this list of 25, but it just as easily could have been 50.

And if you notice we paid extra attention to the '80s and '90s, let's just say that's when many of us were growing up; we're sure younger (and older) readers could come up with an entirely different lineup of quotes. Feel free to share them in the comments!
