Morning Meme: Lance Bass Cries Foul, Sneak Peek At "Magic Mike" and George Takei's Greatest (and Weirdest) Moments

Just a reminder that we're on a reduced posting schedule this week. I'll be here every morning, and snicks in the evening, and there may be something in between, but we need to feed the reindeer at this point. We still love you.

I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say I don't like Lance Bass' attitude about the whole "tranny" incident. He wrote a piece on Huffington Post complaining the gay sites immediately called him out on the slur, while HuffPost invited him to write about the incident. And besides, how was he supposed to know? I have two problems here. First, I don't have Lance's cell number, or I could have given him a guest column. Of course, my email is on the masthead here if he felt he needed a forum - I would have hooked him up! But the bigger issue »

The next new “Sherlock Holmes” movie is out, and if you loved the first film, it’s more of what you loved — more slam-bang Victorian action, more whimsically anachronistic dialogue, more sly homoerotic innuendo and of course, more Robert Downey Jr. doing what he does best, which is to say, upend every convention »

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il died Saturday morning. It is expected to send shock waves throughout the world as no plan for succession has been announced publicly, though his son has been mentioned as a possible successor.

Students in New York who were suspended over "Tebowing" in the hall during class changes are protesting their suspension. The school board says it has nothing to do with religious freedom (and the students admit it was more about the football than praying), but having students incite 40 people to drop to one knee in crowded hallways disrupts class changes and creates fire hazards. Cell phone video seems to support the administration.

Deadline seems to think GLAAD is getting worked up over nothing with the protest of Work It. It's just a guys-in-dresses comedy in the British tradition. This is of course not taking into account the advertising with men in dresses at urinals, »

Kristen Stewart/Robert Pattinson/Taylor Lautner/Breaking Dawn Now Third Biggest Box-Office Hit of 2011

Elizabeth Reaser, Peter Facinelli, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson in Bill Condon's Breaking Dawn: Part 1

Starring Kristen Stewart as a pregnant human, Robert Pattinson as a vampire, and Taylor Lautner as a six-packed werewolf, Bill Condon's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is now the third-biggest blockbuster at the North American box office, having surpassed Todd Phillips' comedy sequel The Hangover: Part II last weekend. According to figures found at Box Office Mojo, The Hangover 2, which stars Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms stranded in Thailand, has collected $254.46 million in the domestic market. After 27 days (up until Dec. 14), Breaking Dawn 1 has raked in $261.45 million. No wonder Star Trek's George Takei is terrified of the Twilight menace.

The two 2011 releases still ahead of Breaking Dawn are David Yates/Daniel Radcliffe/Ralph Fiennes' fantasy thriller Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 »

Robert Pattinson/Kristen Stewart/Twilight Are the Real Threat Admonishes George Takei

15 December 2011 5:11 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

"Fellow Star folks! Cool it down!" admonishes Star Trek veteran and Star Wars: The Clone Wars guest star George Takei, 74, in this hilarious follow-up clip to the (sadly, earthbound) YouTube video wars pitting Star Trek's Captain Kirk aka William Shatner against Star Wars' Princess Leia aka Carrie Fisher. (Where are Harrison Ford and Leonard Nimoy when you most need them?)

"Each is wonderful in its own special way," Takei reassures us all. But then, as the dark background music slowly rises, Takei warns us that "what's needed today more than ever is Star Peace, for there's an ominous, mutual threat to all science fiction."

Now, what's that ominous menace to Capt. Kirk, Princess Leia, the Man from Planet X, Godzilla, and the floating fetus from 2001: A Space Odyssey?

"It's called … Twilight," Take explains, adding, "And it is really, really bad." As he speaks, we see in the »

George Takei calls for Star Wars and Star Trek fans to unite - against Twilight

Sulu actor said: 'gone is any sense of heroism, camaraderie, or epic battle. In its place, we have vampires that go to high school'

It is a decades-long feud that has divided sci-fi fans for as long as the Millenium Falcon first fired up its thrusters and flashed across cinema screens, providing an alternative lure to the attractions of the USS Enterprise and its bold crew.

But after simmering tensions between the Star Trek and Star Wars communities broke into open hostilities involving two of the franchises' most iconic stars, an appeal has been made by George Takei (aka Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu from the helm of the Enterprise) for a ceasefire in the face of a mutual foe: The Twilight franchise.

George Takei: Twilight is the common enemy of Star Wars and Star Trek fans

13 December 2011 10:48 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

George Takei calls for peace, and for fans of Star Trek and Star Wars to combat Twilight, because "it is really, really bad". Video here...

For reasons that we appear to have missed, there seems to have been some pretty pointless dispute blowing up in the past few weeks between William Shatner and Carrie Fisher on whether Star Wars or Star Trek is best.

Given that we’ve used up most of our flame suits this year, we’ve got little urge to jump into the middle of that, not least because it seems a bit of a daft thing to argue about. But leave it to George Takei to moderate a canny peace.

Calling for both sides to stop arguing, Takei said that “What is needed today now more than ever is star peace, for there is an ominous mutual threat to all science fiction."

That threat?

George Takei and Other Celebrity 'Twilight' Haters

13 December 2011 3:00 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

In my last column, I wrote about 10 celebrity "Twilight" fans and how they have declared their love in public. Well, today takes a different turn. Let's head over to the dark side and out the celebrity "Twilight" haters.

Just yesterday, George Takei, voice actor extraordinaire and Hikaru Sulu in the "Star Trek" series, released a YouTube video urging "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" fans to put aside their differences and turn their attention toward hating "Twilight." While it's tongue-in-cheek and clearly an attempt to keep this 72-year-old actor's name in the media (mission accomplished), the vitriol he spews on our favorite vampire series seems to come from a very real place.

"Gone is any sense of heroism, camaraderie or epic battle. In its place we have vampires that sparkle, moan and go to high school," Takei says. "Sci-fi fans be warned, there are no great stories, characters or profound life »

George Takei: 5 things we love about the broker of 'Star Wars'/'Star Trek' peace

13 December 2011 2:40 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Finally, George Takei is getting the attention he deserves. Which is to say more than last week.

The 74-year-old "Star Trek" alum is the toast of the Internet after brokering a peace treaty between warring "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" actors William Shatner and Carrie Fisher and millions of fans who align themselves with each franchise.

But, guess what? George Takei has been awesome for a long time and we would be remiss in our duties if we didn't point out at least five reasons why we love the guy:

1. He's a giver: Takei is a tireless advocate for gay rights and for awareness of Japanese American issues. George and his parents were basically locked up by the U.S. government from 1942 until the end of World War II three years later, just for being Japanese.

2. He's not afraid of that bully William Shatner: Takei has stood up to »

-- While William Shatner, Carrie Fisher, and George Takei may still be debating the merits of Star Trek versus Star Wars, Jj Abrams and company are using an unusual source of inspiration to guide the development of the upcoming Star Trek sequel. Producer Bryan Burk recently spoke to MTV about all things Khan and Kirk and he slipped this interesting tidbit into the conversation: “Unlike the last film, where we were restarting and setting up the characters ... we're going to jump right back in, and we don't have to set up everybody and we can go right in it," he explained. "We're kind of in a mad dash at the beginning of the film. In all of our conversation, we reference a lot of our favorite films and how Empire Strikes Back was spectacular and...

George Takei Brokers Star Peace And Calls On Star Trek And Star Wars Fans To Unite Against Twilight

Back in September, William Shatner himself weighed in on the age-old debate over Star Trek vs. Star Wars that has taken place for decades among fans of both franchises as to which is the superior, which is more worthy of their loyal devotion.

A brilliant new video has now surfaced, with thanks to Deadline for the heads up, in which George Takei, best known for his role as Sulu in Star Trek, tries to broker peace.

“Each is wonderful in its own special way… What’s needed today, now more than ever, is Star Peace, for there is an ominous, mutual threat to all science fiction…”

That threat?

“It’s called… Twilight. And it is really, really bad.”

George Takei asks Star Trek, Star Wars fans to unite against Twilight

George Takei has suggested that Star Wars and Star Trek share a common enemy in The Twilight Saga. Takei, who played Mr Sulu in the original Star Trek, has released a video calling on Star Trek and Star Wars fans to unite in their love of sci-fi. William Shatner had sparked controversy earlier this year when he claimed that Star Trek is the superior sci-fi franchise, with Carrie Fisher later responding that Shatner's comments were ridiculous. In a newly-released clip called 'George Takei is the Broker of Star Peace', the actor warned fans of both franchises that their shared threat is the vampires of the Twilight films. "Gone is any sense of heroism, camaraderie, or epic battle. In its place we have vampires that sparkle, moan and go to high school," Takei (more) »

'Star Wars' And 'Star Trek' Fans Rallied Against 'Twilight' By George Takei

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there were no sexy vampires whose skin sparkled in the sunlight--and that's exactly how some fans prefer it. A new, unexpected rivalry seems to be heating up between two science fiction franchises against the "Twilight" series, and the person leading the charge is an equally unexpected party.

Get details on that new feud and more as we look around the blogosphere today!

George Takei Declares "Star" War

After months of half-joking, half-serious back-and-forths between celebrities well known for their association with the "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" franchises, "Trek" icon George Takei has called for peace between the two fan bases in favor of war against another: the "Twilight" series. Takei, who played Sulu in the original "Trek" series, posted a three-minute video calling the values of "Twilight" into question, while championing the ideas put forth by both "Star" brands. »

Votd: George Takei Says ‘Twilight’ Is ‘Really Bad’ And A Common Enemy To ‘Star Trek’ & ‘Star Wars’

13 December 2011 5:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Over the past few weeks, a few online videos made the rounds pitting Star Trek alum William Shatner in a nerdy battle of words with Star Wars alum Carrie Fisher over whose legendary sci-fi franchise is better. Well Trek star George Takei has now stepped in to be a "broker of star peace" and band fans of both franchises together against a common enemy: Twilight. Check out the video after the jump. Thanks to Topless Robot [1] for the heads up. While the video is funny, and this whole forced feud is all well and good, I'm going to maturely step in, suck the fun out of it and look at these three franchises logically. The Star Wars vs. Star Trek debate, in my mind, is a silly one. Besides the fact that they're both immensely popular, have the word "Star" in the title followed by another word with four letters and take place in space, »
