Broadway Musical ‘Allegiance’ Starring George Takei to Screen in Cinemas

22 September 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“Allegiance,” the Broadway musical that starred George Takei in a four-month run last season, will come to movie theaters around the country in a one-night-only December screening presented by Fathom Events, the distributor of alternative cinema content.

“Allegiance” tackles the serious historical subject of the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, in a story loosely inspired by Takei’s childhood. Also starring Lea Salonga (“Miss Saigon”) and Telly Leung, the musical has songs by Jay Kuo with a book by Marc Acito, Kuo and Lorenzo Thione. Stafford Arima directed the production.

The dissemination of Broadway content on screens big and small is a market that theater producers have begun to explore with increasing frequency. For instance, “Of Mice and Men,” the 2014 revival starring James Franco, got a bigscreen showcase as part of the National Theater’s Nt Live series of screenings, and before that, the “Legally Blonde” musical aimed »

Newswire: George Takei’s musical is coming to movie theaters for one night only

22 September 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Though it broke ground as the first Asian American-led musical on Broadway in more than a decade, George Takei’s Allegiance never quite found a steady audience and wound up closing after five months of performances. But now the musical is getting a second life with a special one-night only screening in movie theaters nationwide. According to BroadwayWorld, “George Takei’s Allegiance: The Broadway Musical On The Big Screen” will be broadcast in theaters on Tuesday, December 13. The screening will include an intro from Takei, interviews with the cast and creators, and behind-the-scenes footage.

Taking inspiration from Takei’s own life, Allegiance explores the U.S. internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Takei stars as the kooky grandfather of the Kimura family, who are forced to relocate from their California farm to an internment camp in Wyoming. The A.V. Club found it quietly revolutionary in its commitment ...

‘Star Trek’ Cast Members Celebrate Show’s 50th Anniversary

8 September 2016 3:07 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Cast members from all five “Star Trek” shows celebrated the franchise’s milestone anniversary on social media Thursday.

Fifty years ago today, the very first episode of the original “Star Trek” series — “The Man Trap” — debuted on TV. The 1996 Variety review predicted the show’s demise, “The opener won’t open up many new frequencies after this sampler.”

How wrong the reviewer was.

Five decades after the debut, the franchise is still going strong, with a sixth show coming in 2017 and a 14th movie planned (following this summer’s “Star Trek Beyond”).

William Shatner (Captain Kirk), Brent Spiner (Commander Data), Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), Michael Dorn (Lieutenant Worf), and Scott Bakula (Captain Archer) recorded a congratulatory tribute to the show:

Rodd Roddenberry, son of “Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry and frequent “Trek” actress Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, tweeted that his father would be “incredibly touched,” followed by the hashtag celebrating the anniversary, #StarTrek »

‘Star Trek’ 50th Anniversary: Where the Actors Are Now

8 September 2016 12:40 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Star Trek” premiered 50 years ago today.

The original series — created by Gene Roddenberry — ran from 1966 to 1969 before finding a second life in syndication and then on the big screen.

Star Trek” brought some of the most memorable characters on TV: the brash Captain Kirk, the logical Commander Spock, and Lieutenant Uhura, one of the first non-menial African American television roles.

Sadly, Leonard Nimoy, who played the half-Vulcan Spock, passed away last year. Other deceased cast members include DeForest Kelley (Dr. Leonard McCoy aka “Bones”) and James Doohan (Montgomery Scott aka “Scotty”). However, the surviving actors still have prolific careers.

William Shatner (Kirk) is currently starring in “Better Late Than Never.” George Takei (Sulu) recently finished a critically acclaimed run on Broadway in “Allegiance,” a play about Japanese internment camps. Both have found new life as internet memes as well. Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) just had a guest role on “The Young and the Restless.”

'Star Trek' at 50: How the Sci-Fi TV Show Changed Everything

8 September 2016 7:00 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

In the beginning, only Mr. Spock was spared.

It was early 1965, and NBC had just passed on "The Cage," the pilot episode for a science fiction show the network had been considering picking up for their fall season. "Too cerebral," they said. But they let creator Gene Roddenberry try again. He kept the starship Enterprise, but recast its crew, save for the grinning, excitable science officer played by Leonard Nimoy.

The Spock audiences met on the night of Sept. 8, 1966, when "The Man Trap" became the first Star Trek episode broadcast, »

Movie Review – Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)

6 September 2016 1:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Kubo and the Two Strings, 2016.

Directed by Travis Knight.

Featuring the voice talents of Art Parkinson, Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara, George Takei and Ralph Fiennes.

Synopsis:

Living with his mother in peace, Kubo’s life is changed when he is tasked with finding the sword unbreakable, armor and helmet to defeat his sinister aunts and destructive grandfather. To assist, a monkey and beetle are on hand to help him.

There is something deeply poetic at the heart of Kubo and the Two Strings. Expertly, the themes of family, creativity and grief fold neatly together, akin to the origami creations that our hero, Kubo, is an expert in. Kubo and the Two Strings holds the intimacy of a Ghibli movie combined with the mesmerising textured Laika Studio stop-motion technique. Made by the creators of Coraline and The Boxtrolls, this is another hit for a studio that is forging a new path in animation. »

For Adam Nimoy, the documentary “For the Love of Spock” gave him an opportunity to connect with father Leonard Nimoy in the closing months of his life.

“The minute I suggested it to dad, he was in,” Nimoy recalls in an exclusive clip. “That led me on a journey of self discovery about my relationship with my father.”

The clip includes multiple photos of the two in costume and in real life. The son bears more than a passing resemblance to his father, both physically and vocally.

The film will be released nationwide and on VOD by Gravitas Ventures on Sept. 9 — one day after the official 50th anniversary of the first network broadcast of “Star Trek” — and examines the phenomenon of the character Spock and the man behind the character.

Adam Nimoy began working on the film with his father in late 2014 before he passed away on Feb. 27, 2015. The doc »

Most expected Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad to dominate at the box office throughout the month of August before it hit theaters three weeks ago. However, after suffering a huge second weekend drop of 67.4% last weekend, many believed that its reign would come to an end this weekend, with three new releases hitting theaters, the epic remake Ben-Hur, the animated adventure Kubo and the Two Strings and the true story adaptation War Dogs. As it turns out, all three of those newcomers underperformed leading to Suicide Squad winning for the third week in a row with $20.7 million.

Suicide Squad's $133.6 million made it the fourth-highest opening of the year. The debut falls below Marvel's Captain America: Civil War ($179.1 million), Warner Bros./DC's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million) and Disney Pixar's Finding Dory ($135 million).
