Our look back on the best and brightest comics, comic book movies, news and swag from 2009 continues with today's list of the year's best movies, television and gaming projects and creators outside of the print and digital comics world.
(And just in case you missed it, be sure to check out yesterday's "Best Comics Of 2009" list!)
Best Of 2009: Movies / TV / Games
Best Animated Series
"Batman: The Brave and the Bold"
In the end, this category came down to two potential winners: DC's "The Brave and the Bold" and Marvel's "Super Hero Squad." Both series are great fun, take full advantage of their respective characters' universes, and are equally enjoyable by kids and adult comics fans alike. "Brave and the Bold" gets the nod, however, due to its brilliant voice casting and willingness to pair its eclectic cast of real-life actors with the perfect characters, no matter how obscure. William Shatner is the king of self promotion and seems to have conquered just about every area of mass media. Next Sunday, the second season of his talk show, Shatner's Raw Nerve, debuts on Bio.
The former Captain Kirk is also known for having a healthy ego and it came out several years ago that he had hurt the feelings of some of his former Star Trek castmates -- in particular Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Walter Koenig, and the late James Doohan -- while filming the series and the movies. Doohan refused to talk to Shatner in later years and Takei has explained how difficult it was to work with him.
In an interview with the NY Post, Shatner says that he's not losing sleep over it. The interviewer asked if he thinks that he's mellowed over the years, having rubbed some people »

William Shatner has revealed in a new interview that he has given up on trying to make peace with his "bitter" former Star Trek co-stars. The 78-year-old, who shot to fame as Captain Kirk on the original 1960s show, admitted that his memories of the series have been tarnished by his feuds with ex-castmates. Shatner claimed that he was stung when former co-star George Takei failed to invite him to his wedding to long-time partner Brad Altman last year. William Shatner has given up trying to make peace with his "bitter" former Star Trek co-stars - insisting "nothing seems to work".
The 78-year-old, who shot to fame as Captain Kirk on the original 1960s show, admits his memories of the series have been marred by bitter feuds with former castmates.
Shatner admitted he was hurt after former co-star George Takei failed to invite him to his wedding to longtime partner Brad Altman last year. Meanwhile, Shatner reached a gentleman's agreement with Leonard Nimoy never to talk Trek in order to salvage their friendship.
But the star insists most of his efforts to mend relationships have been in vain, and he's finished trying to be friends with his former colleagues.
He tells the New York Post, "I've asked them (my co-stars) numerous times to see if I can assuage their bitterness. I don't know what their problem is, quite frankly, so I've given up on trying to make it better. I don't like any ill-feeling, and if there was something I could do to correct it I would. But nothing seems to work." »

After a failed attempt to bring it back in July, it looks like Alpha Waves Radio, the podcast version of Airlock Alpha, is finally coming back. Hosted by Michael Hinman, a weekly podcast was once made popular as SyFy Radio before the "SyFy" brand was sold to NBC Universal. Unlike that live show that aired on BlogTalkRadio, this new show will be produced completely as a podcast. It will continue to air through BlogTalkRadio, but can now be found at AlphaWavesRadio.com. "I'm real excited to finally be bringing this show back," said Hinman, who is the owner and coordinator of the BlipNetwork, which includes Airlock Alpha, Rabid Doll and Inside Blip. "We had some great guests in the past like George Takei, the cast of 'Buck Rogers,' Brent Spiner and others. And with this new show in »

Movie icon Charlton Heston was so embarrassed by his thinning hair he wore two wigs on stage, according to Star Trek's George Takei.
The Planet of the Apes actor was starring in A Man For All Seasons at a theatre in London's West End in 1987.
And Heston made sure he wore his regular hairpiece at all times - despite having to don a large wig during the shows.
Takei says, "There was another actor that wore two helmets in a play on the West End at the Savoy Theatre as matter of a fact, an American... Charlton Heston was as bald as a billiard ball, so he wore a hairpiece, a toupee - and he didn't like to reveal that fact. So he came in to the theatre with the toupee on, he was doing A Man For All Seasons... so on top of his toupee he'd put the Sir Thomas More wigs on, can you imagine how hot it was? Two wigs on: His toupee and that full head of hair." »

Marge Simpson has made quite a headline earlier this month when the picture of her covering Playboy magazine was revealed. Now that the issue has come out, the pictures featured in the centerfold of the adult magazine are making their rounds, exposing her in sultry poses involving donuts and the shadow of her beloved husband, Homer.
Like other live models, "The Simpsons" character is required to do an interview and fill a data sheet. She is particularly annoyed when asked to mention her birth date and weight, writing down "nosy!" and "very nosy!". Marge is also turned off by "slim men who work out and take care of their bodies".
Marge's Playboy appearance is part of the show's 20th anniversary. On Sunday, October 18 at Barker hangar in Santa Monica, California, the voice cast, crew and even the Simpsons were out to celebrate the milestone. Producer Al Jean made time to comment on Marge's Playboy cover, »

Last weekend's Equality March in Washington D.C. got me to thinking about how far we have — and haven't — come in the fight for gay equality. But since AfterElton.com focuses on pop culture, I'm going to look at things through that lens and leave the political analysis for Pam's House Blend, Americablog, Bilerico and the other assorted gay political websites that cover the topic.
One of the very first times American television addressed the subject of gay men (bisexuality was almost never addressed) was way back in 1954 when the L.A. based tabloid talk show Confidential File presented "Homosexuals and the Problems They Present." Hmm, I'm guessing it wasn't terribly flattering unless it was about how boring straight people looked in comparison to us 'mos.
San Francisco's public TV station did the first ever documentary, The Rejected in 1961 and it wasn't until 1967 that a television show first featured a gay storyline. »

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in television (or pop culture in general) and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week. We'll announce the winner on Friday, and that champ will reign until a new set of challengers are introduced the following week to try to steal his title.
Last week, Actor Chris Colfer (he plays Kurt on Glee), took the crown for coming out with little fanfare in an interview in The Advocate. This week we've got four new contenders vying for the throne: A closeted ad man, a cigar-chomping Melrose denizen, a taser trigger-happy bear cub cop, and some not-so-newlyweds.
Check them out after the break, and vote for your favorite!
This week's contenders:

George Takei and Brad Altman
Last night, The Newlywed Game broke barriers by having George Takei and Brad Altman compete as the first same-sex couple in the show’s 43 year history. In a special celebrity edition, Brad and George competed against My Fair Brady stars Christopher Knight and Adrianne Curry as well as Damien Gurganius and Nicole Brewer from The Biggest Loser: Couples 2, with the winner earning $10,000 for the charity of their choice.
Unlike the show’s sponsor, eHarmony.com, the show was fully inclusive, giving Brad and George plenty of airtime and showing several kisses between the two. And while there were no references to “making whoopee,” the questions didn’t shy away from intimacy as the couples were asked everything from what kind of pillow talk they engage in to which food was their favorite aphrodisiac.
While Mexican food (and especially Brad’s very specific answer of »

Star Trek icon Leonard Nimoy is to auction off a pair of his Mr. Spock ears to raise cash for charity.
The actor will be honoured at an upcoming Company of Angels charity gala in Los Angeles and he's celebrating by clearing out his attic and selling off a treasure trove of sci-fi memorabilia.
Also going under the hammer at the Culture Clash event on Saturday are action figures and one-of-a-kind Star Trek memorabilia donated by William Shatner and George Takei, who will be among the guests paying tribute to Nimoy.
But the ears Nimoy wore as Spock are the big attraction and auction bosses expect them to fetch up to $10,000 (GBP6,600).
The charity gala marks the 50th anniversary of Los Angeles' oldest non-profit professional theatre. »

Chicago – While you count the days until the beloved reboot of “Star Trek” hits Blu-Ray and DVD on November 17th, new and old fans should check back in with the original crew of the Enterprise in Paramount’s excellent 7-disc HD set, bursting with not only dozens of special features but enhanced visual effects and audio. This season of “Star Trek” has never looked like this.
And I’m not sure it ever should have. Before getting into the meat of this excellent set, the main issue surrounding these remastered classic episodes of television is that the effects have been dragged kicking and screaming into the new millenium. Even the opening credits have been enhanced, as the cheap model of the Enterprise has been replaced by, well, kind of cheap CGI of the Enterprise.
Star Trek: The Original Series: Season 2 was released on Blu-Ray on September 22nd, 2009.

After a rocky first season that ended with the letter writing campaign to save Star Trek from cancellation, the second season opened in a horrible Friday night time slot but was a stronger series. Creator Gene Roddenberry continued to oversee everything as an Executive Producer but John Meredith Lucas took over as the line producer, aided by Roddenberry’s former secretary, D.C. Fontana becoming the script consultant. These changes made for a strong start as witnessed on Star Trek: The Original Series Season 2, now out on Blu-ray from Paramount Home Video.
Things had started to gel for the series as the characters became more sharply defined and the writers began to tailor the by-play accordingly. The backstory grew stronger so it was clear what the United Federation of Planets was all about and that the starship Enterprise was truly exploring space and fought only when necessary.

The new series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! is facing credit crunch cutbacks, a report claims. According to the Daily Star, the current financial crisis means that producers do not have enough funds to sign up big-name stars, in contrast to last year when Star Trek's George Takei was said to be on a £200,000 contract. Bosses are also reportedly planning to scrap expensive bushtucker trials and (more) »

Marvel’s latest entrance into the young demographic is their new Cartoon Network series, The Super Hero Squad Show, based on the Hasbro toyline.
The toys and the series feature small exaggerated/cartoonish versions of all the popular Marvel characters and the show takes them all and combines them into The Super Hero Squad to fight a combination of villains from all of the different Marvel books.
Since I’m a Marvel fan I thought I’d give the show a viewing by checking out its premiere and tell you what I thought. Continue on to see my feelings on the series and to check out some pics for the series as well as a list of the incredible voice talent they’ve gathered to play our favourite Marvel characters.
In short, this is just a big pile of awesome for kids. For adult Marvel fans, it’s still a fun watch too, »

Our brothers and sisters over at TV Squad have busted through the boob tube and brought with them the following juicy bits of must-see eye candy.
While a lot of people don't see anything funny about filing their taxes, Ron Howard is hoping to find comedy at the IRS in his new sitcom. Is that guy really saying "plucking?" Here's a news anchor using some questionable language. Check out the look on his co-anchor's face. I'm probably one of the few people with fond memories of Greg the Bunny, but MTV is producing a spin-off series called Warren the Ape. The Newly Wed Game is going to feature its first gay couple: Star Trek's George Takei and his partner Brad Altman. Jenna Elfman is playing pregnant in her new show Accidentally On Purpose, which is convenient because the actress is in fact expecting. ...and finally, we end on a »

George Takei and husband Brad Altman are to be featured as the first gay couple on a forthcoming episode of The Newlywed Game. The Star Trek actor wed his longtime partner in Los Angeles in September 2008, while his TV co-stars Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols acted as best man and best woman at the ceremony. Carnie Wilson, who is the host of the Game Show Network series reboot, said that she has been in favour of an all-gay edition of the show, and that the move to feature the pair along with heterosexual celebrity couples this season is not a "political statement". She told TV Guide : "It's needed at this point. To me, this is not anything political. This is not a political statement. This show has always been about couples and how well (more) »

That's right, the Associated Press reports that Mr. Sulu himself, George Takei, will boldly go where no gay man has gone before: The Newlywed Game. An upcoming celebrity edition of the venerable game show (now on Gsn) will feature the Star Trek legend and gay-rights activist answering blush-worthy questions with his partner of 22 years, Brad Altman. While no fewer than five iterations of The Newlywed Game have been on the air since the show premiered in 1967, none has ever featured a same-sex couple — presumably due to a show rule allowing only couples with legal marriage licenses. But Takei and Altman were married last September in Los Angeles, granting them all the same benefits as a traditional couple, including the right to mildly humiliate yourself by dishing about "making whoopee" on national television. Anybody else excited to watch this? Fun fact: Takei and Altman aren't actually the first same-sex couple to »
