25 underappreciated family movies of the last 20 years

From Flushed Away and Hunchback to Titan A.E. and Sky High - the family movies that don't get the love they deserve...

When I sit through a film such as Zootropolis, Rango, Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, Eddie The Eagle or Coraline, I can’t help but be thankful somebody has bothered. As a parent as well as a movie lover, I’ve grown to really dislike family movies that just turn up to act as a surrogate babysitter for 90 minutes, with no intention of becoming anybody’s favourite film. The films I'm going to talk about are the family movies therefore that I think both try and do something a bit more, yet continue to fly under many people's radar.

A bonus mention before we get going, and number 26 in the list, much to my surprise: Alvin & The Chipmunks 4. I was expecting next to zero from it, courtesy »

'The Simpsons' spoofs the 'Alien' franchise: A brief history

25 May 2016 3:27 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The Alien films have been endlessly spoofed in popular culture, and with its bevy of cinematic references, The Simpsons has proven to be particularly fertile ground for clever tributes to the cult horror/sci-fi series. On the 37th anniversary of Ridley Scott's 1979 original, here's a brief history of the show's loving homages to the cult franchise. Did we miss any? Let us know in the comments. (All references compiled from the Alien Anthology Wiki.) Season 5, Episode 15 ("Deep Space Homer") The first instance of The Simpsons' Alien spoofery came during Season 5, when, during a segment of the uber-violent Itchy and Scratchy Show, Itchy is shown bursting from Scratchy's stomach in the style of H.R. Giger's baby xenomorph. 'The CW' Lists Fall 2016 Schedule: 'Supergirl' Arrives, 'Supernatural' Moves

19 May 2016 6:45 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

The CW has a "super" new lineup for Fall 2016-2017, including the arrival of "Supergirl," which appears to be making a smooth transition from CBS on the same night and time, plus "Supernatural" moving once again for Season 12, this time back to Thursdays. The network really wants to keep fans on their toes with that show (which also has new showrunners). Whatever. Fans will follow it wherever it goes, even if it gets traded to CBS like a network fantasy league.

The president of The CW, Mark Pedowitz, issued a statement with the schedule release:

"We have four terrific additions to our schedule next season, and five great anchors at eight o'clock, every night of the week. [...] We are thrilled to have Supergirl on The CW this fall, joining our popular roster of DC heroes. Plus, we have three new series lined up for next season that perfectly fit our brand, »

CW Fall Schedule: ‘Supergirl’ Lands on Monday, ‘No Tomorrow’ Grabs Post-‘Flash’ Slot

19 May 2016 5:04 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Supergirl” will land in its familiar Monday 8 p.m. time slot when the drama relocates from CBS to the CW in the fall.

The DC Comics superhero series will be paired on the night with the third season of CW’s “Jane the Virgin,” in what the network called the union of a woman with superpowers and an “everyday superwoman.” “We think ‘Supergirl’ will give a real boost to ‘Jane the Virgin,’ ” CW chief Mark Pedowitz said.

Meanwhile, new romantic comedy “No Tomorrow” lands the coveted Tuesday 9 p.m. slot behind CW’s highest-rated series, “The Flash.” Pedowitz said the offbeat show about a romance that blooms as the apocalypse draws near “shares with ‘The Flash’ a blue-sky optimism” that made it a good fit for the time slot.

CW has ordered four new dramas for the 2016-17 campaign (see listings below), with three settling onto the fall schedule. “Riverdale, »

The Trust review: “A dark, twisted and fun thrill ride”

15 May 2016 9:34 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The Trust review: Nicolas Cage returns to the screen opposite Elijah Wood in this dark comedy that debut feature directors Alex and Benjamin Brewer.

The Trust review by Awais Irfan, May 2016.

The Trust review

After a whole string of bad films, from Outcast to Left Behind to The Runner, the once-great Nicolas Cage really needed a good role in a good film to perhaps give him sort of redemption and show the world that not all hope is lost with his career. His latest project, the bad-cop crime film The Trust is just that; taking him back to his Leaving Las Vegas roots, this slick and competent thriller is Cage’s first good film since 2013’s remarkable Joe – a dark, twisted and fun thrill ride.

When police officer Jim Stone (Nicolas Cage) notices an unusually high bail receipt for a drugs bust, he begins to devise a plan to find »

‘The Woods’ Get Menacing in First Look Trailer

11 May 2016 7:45 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett have in recent years produced some top quality horror thrillers. The duo are responsible for A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, and the absolutely brilliant The Guest, a film that launched both Dan Stevens and Maika Monroe. With a CV as impressive as that everyone is waiting with baited breath for their next offering The Woods.

The Woods, releasing through Lionsgate who made their name in the horror genre, is a horror film to rival The Blair Witch Project, at least that’s the hope. The plot details are being kept pretty sparse and all we know so far is that the story revolves around a group of college kids on a camping trip who discover they aren’t alone. Basically it’s the premise of pretty much every horror film going but early buzz is promising something special. A trailer »

Captain America: Civil War – Review

It’s finally time to pack away the bulky Winter coats and jackets, or at least regulate them to the far corners of the closet, because Summer has truly arrived. A new tradition heralding the seasonal start began eight years ago with the first major Marvel Studios release Iron Man, and almost every first weekend of May since has seen another “box office buster” storm the nation’s, now the world’s, theatre screens. Like the “star-spangled man”, these exec do have a plan, mapping out groups of films as a “phase”. That 2008 classic marked the beginning of “phase one” that concluded with the first titanic team-up of heroes, Marvel’S The Avengers. “Phase two” finished up last Summer with Ant-man and the second Avengers epic. Who better to usher in the beginning of “phase three” than the first Avenger himself, Steve Rogers? But the good Captain now faces a »
