Why Liking Bad Films Means You’re Smarter Than Average

21 August 2016 4:00 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

If you’re constantly getting abuse from your friends about your taste in films, Neil Calloway says help may be at hand from a recent study…

In what appears to be the cinematic equivalent of those studies that receive an inordinate amount of publicity when they trumpet the fact that gorging yourself on chocolate and red wine makes your healthier,“Enjoying trash films: Underlying features, viewing stances, and experiential response dimensions” from the Max Planck Society argues that more intelligent people enjoy bad films. Now you have an excuse for your collection of Uwe Boll and WWE movies; you watch them because you’re intelligent.

Of course, correlation does not mean causation (the more films Nicolas Cage appears in in a given year, the more people drown in swimming pools); watching Roger Corman and Troma Movies doesn’t make you smarter, it’s just more intelligent people are more like to enjoy trashier films. »

Interview with Mike Birbiglia, writer/director/star of Don’t Think Twice

9 August 2016 11:22 PM, PDT | CinemaNerdz | See recent CinemaNerdz news »

For years, an improve group called The Commune have been the stars of their small New York improv theater. The members of the group, Mile (Mike Birbiglia), Samantha (Gillian Jacobs), Jack (Keegan-Michael Key), Allison (Kate Micucci), Bill (Chris Gethard), and Lindsay (Tami Sagher) entertain audiences night after night by performing as a finely-tuned troop. But, by day, they have to support themselves by working soul-crushing menial jobs.

Then, after they learn that their beloved theater is closing down and a hit comedy television show, ala Saturday Night Live, is looking for talent, the group dynamic begins to fracture and it may be time for the group to stop dreaming and get on with their lives.

Such is the premise of writer/director/star Mike Birbiglia’s new film Don’t Think Twice. While Birbiglia’s first film, Sleepwalk with Me (2012), was based on his work as a stand-up comedian, his »

How ‘Mr. Robot’ Star Rami Malek Used Anxiety to Carry His Breakthrough Emmys Drama

8 August 2016 3:17 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Rami Malek is in Emmy mode.

The “Mr. Robot” star just flew back to the States from London for a fitting with a stylist, an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and a visit to the Television Critics Association Awards (where his USA Network series was named best new series).

What’s more, he’s got a new movie to prep: Malek will play the Dustin Hoffman role in a reworking of John Frankenheimer’s 1974 prison-break classic, “Papillon.”

This actor doesn’t agree to do just anything – he sets sky-high standards for himself. That’s how Malek broke through the noise on Sam Esmail’s innovative paranoid psycho-thriller “Mr. Robot.” The drama seemed to come out of nowhere, but quickly collected so many nominations and awards (Golden Globes Best Drama Series, Peabody, Critics Choice, AFI Ten Best TV, Gotham Breakthrough) that six Emmy nominations seemed inevitable.

It’s been almost a decade since we’ve seen Mike White direct a feature film. Of course, the screenwriter behind The Good Girl and School of Rock has been busy since Year of the Dog. Ben Stiller's Balls, Jason Biggs' Junk & Beyond: The Funniest Penis Scenes in Movies

14 July 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

There's something about a good dick joke that just brings the LOLs. Don't get us wrong—some men's full-frontal scenes are meant to leave the audience all hot and bothered. We're referring to a different type of penis gag, though—the kind that's intentionally hilarious (even if it still makes you cringe a little bit). Who could forget Ben Stiller's losing battle with a zipper in There's Something About Mary? Or what about Jason Biggs' attack on that warm, homemade, no-longer-wholesome apple pie in American Pie? What about NeighborsZac Efron and Seth Rogen gave us too many penis jokes to count with that gem... Who needs highbrow humor anyway? »

Synopsis:

A group of scientists team up to battle paranormal entities that are appearing all our New York.

(Spoilers!)

Even though I was one of the large (record-breaking) number of people who ‘disliked’ this film’s first theatrical trailer when it appeared on YouTube, I can assure you it was not for misogynistic reasons. When this project was announced, the dread I felt wasn’t because it was a female-driven reboot, it was because I love the 1984 original so much I would have been against anyone remaking it, full stop – I’ll admit, the fact that it was being made by the team behind Bridesmaids (which, along with Frozen, gets »
