Toronto plans acquisitions push

13 hours ago | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Exclusive: In a bid to drive acquisitions, Toronto top brass are understood to be collaborating with select sales agents to allow festival staff and volunteers to attend four early-stage private buyersn screenings.

Screendaily has learned the move is being orchestrated to replicate the buoyant atmosphere of public screenings in an effort to stir up sales.

The timing of the move is dictated by a growing recognition that most decision-makers at distribution companies will have left town by the time these films officially premiere in the second week, despite Toronto’s efforts to spread its riches across the duration of the festival.

That strategy was informed in part by the festival’s new and well documented policy of holding back until the second week premieres of anticipated films that will receive their actual world premiere in Telluride.

Two cases in point are North American premieres of The Weinstein Company’s Benedict Cumberbatch starrer The Imitation Game and Fox »

Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide Ending After 45 Years – Internet Kills Iconic Print Paperback

19 August 2014 3:21 PM, PDT | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Another print icon bites the dust.

Leonard Maltin’s 2015 Movie Guide will be the final edition of this film lovers’ guide, which started in 1969 under the title TV Movies. But in recent years, the annual guide, which now numbers 1,611 pages and features nearly 16,000 capsule movie reviews, has become a victim of the changing times and the way information is consumed by a new generation. The new edition, which comes out Sept. 2, is the last, bad news for many industry-ites and film lovers who used it religiously.

“An entire generation has been raised to acquire all their information online from their mobile devices or computers,” Maltin told me this morning. “These are not the likely customers for a physical paperback reference book. Our sales have sharply declined in recent years.”

The virtual death of bookstores likely didn’t help the cause either. “We still have a loyal readership,” Maltin said. “It »

Hector and the Search for Happiness Review

19 August 2014 5:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Just last year audiences were treated to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which saw Ben Stiller undertake a world-traversing voyage to understand the meaning of life. This time it’s Simon Pegg trying to get in touch with his happy-self in Hector and the Search for Happiness. Based on French psychiatrist François Lelord’s best-selling novel of the same name, and directed by Peter Chelsom, Simon Pegg plays our dissatisfied protagonist Hector; a quirky psychiatrist who realises his methods aren’t helping his patients, and so embarks on a trip around the world in a bid to discover the secret of happiness.

Among the destinations Hector jaunts too are Shanghai, The Himalayas and more. Chelsom does well to capture the energy of the various locales, and if nothing else the aesthetics in Hector are mostly impressive, all the more so when you consider the tight budget. As for the film’s relatable messages, »

While one might think that position would be too good to pass up, it looks like Theroux can't do it due to his commitments to HBO's The Leftovers. Said the actor/writer, "I don.t think I.m going to do it anymore. It really depends on whether »
