Variety reports Science Fiction legend Arthur C. Clarke appeared at a tribute to his iconic 2001: A Space Odyssey last week... as a hologram. "Beam me up, Scotty, indeed," Clarke was heard to say. The event, hosted by Patrick Stewart last Thursday at the Playboy Mansion, featured a replica of the monolith and three actors in ape suits waving bones at the entrance. Clarke, who was at his home in Sri Lanka, attended virtually via a three dimensional holographic technology created by Teleportec. (This story was compiled by IMDb staff) »

Stewart's Home Town Mission Fails

24 January 2001 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Patrick Stewart has finally failed in the toughest mission of his life - to boldly put his home town of Dewsbury back on the map. For the past 18 months Stewart, 54, has been plugging Dewsbury in a slick five-minute promo video. And as he tries to promote the dowdy West Yorks village, Stewart even slips in Star Trek's immortal adverb, urging businessmen to "boldly" push Dewsbury into the new Millennium. Stewart was born and raised in Dewsbury in the grim post-War years, and even worked on the local paper - until he was sacked for spending too much time on the stage. Even when he became an international Hollywood star Stewart never forgot his roots. And when local tourism bosses asked him to do a Dewsbury voiceover last year, he accepted like a shot. He says in the upbeat video, organised by the Dewsbury Town Centre Management, "Dewsbury is a small but vibrant market town nestled between Manchester and Leeds. "It is presently in the middle of a .7 million regeneration programme. "Dewsbury is changing - and fast. See for yourself the exciting change that will help push Dewsbury boldly into the 21st century." Despite the video's being shown nationwide and distributed to tourist boards and businesses throughout Britain, Dewsbury is still a sleepy backwater. Allison Harpin, a spokesman for Kirklees Council, admitted that few tourists visit the town - and they rarely bother to spend the night. She said, "There isn't much for tourists to see - apart from the town market. Those that come here always head off to Manchester or Leeds for the night. "But things are improving in Dewsbury. More businesses are gradually moving into the area." And life-long resident Alan Fletcher 75, reckons the actor is better off fighting his battles up in space. "This is the worse place on earth. More businesses are closing down than opening up despite the government throwing millions at us, " he said. "It was great Patrick agreed to do the video, but he is really wasting his time." »
