The Black List of 2011 - Part 1

12 December 2011 10:38 PM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

For the seventh annual year a list of the top unproduced screenplays written in the past 12 calendar months has been made. The Black List is the most recognized and celebritized compilation for screenwriters and unknown movie ideas to be heard. While some prior Black List scripts have gone on to be made (like Juno or 500 Days of Summer), most scripts do not. However, what being on The Black List can do is to give a big push of credibility to a screenwriter hoping to carve out a career in Hollywood.

The Black List recepients are chosen by a committee of 300 individuals working in Hollywood: agents, writers, producers, managers and the like. They read the screenplays that float around the showbiz ecosystem; some are bought and are already in development while others are still seeing the interest of talent of financial backers.

Rio Sex Comedy

4 December 2011 7:21 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Rio Sex Comedy is a movie that gets two-thirds of its title right. The movie is set in Rio and lots of people are having sex, but there were very few laughs in this supposed comedy. In fact, there isn't much of a movie or story or point to Rio Sex Comedy.

Rio Sex Comedy has three main “plots” (and I use that term loosely) that sort of weave together by the end of the film. In the first story, Irene (Irene Jacob) is a documentary filmmaker interviewing house-workers and showing their working conditions. Her husband Robert (Jerome Kircher) invites his cameraman brother Antoine (Jean-Marc Roulot) to come to Rio and help Irene with her documentary. The documentary storyline gets dropped, though, when Irene and Antoine start shacking up. The second story is about William (Bill Pullman), an American ambassador, running away from his American handlers and getting mixed up »

How I Met Your Mother Review: Mystery vs. History

17 October 2011 9:15 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

So video killed the radio star and the smart phone killed the bar room debate, but the "dark ages" were not a nostalgic time of ignorant bliss to be mourned like Ted did on this week's episode,"Mystery vs. History."

He, of all people, should have never doubted the value of foresight as it pertained to his dating record. Robin and Barney hacked into our hearts once again as we flashed back to them snapping into "research mode" each time Ted announced a new woman in his life.

The smart phone is not America's favorite food, but it is the greatest thing since sliced bread, although even a mini-fridge fetish wasn't enough to freeze out Ted from the beautiful Paula (Rachel Sterling).

A reluctant Kevin could only hold his tongue for so long before letting Robin and her friends know what he really thought about them. (See Fisher Stevens role »

HollywoodNews.com: Exclusive: Sting’s 60th birthday party at the Beacon Theater was a four hour celebration of the rock star’s career and songs with his own band and almost a dozen famous musicians performing his music. They included Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Herbie Hancock, Lady Gaga. Branford Marsalis, will.i.am, Mary J. Blige, Chris Botti, Jimmy Nail, and Met Opera star Bryn Terfel. The latter opened the second act of the show with a rendition of “Roxanne” certain to become part of pop history–it was hilarious and serious at the same time, and showed how Sting’s punkiest new wave music has resonance in many forms.

There were many extraordinary moments on stage and off, where documentary maker Joe Berlinger brought the primary member of the just released Memphis 3, Jason Baldwin. And there were also Robert Downey and his wife Susan (Downey was »

DVD Playhouse—September 2011

By Allen Gardner

In A Better World (Sony) Winner of last year’s Best Foreign Film Oscar, this Danish export looks at two fractured families and the effect that the adult world dysfunction has on their two sons, who form an immediate and potentially deadly bond. Director Susanne Bier delivers another powerful work that maintains its drive during the films’ first 2/3, then falters somewhat during the last act. Still, well-worth seeing, and beautifully made. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Commentary by Bier and editor Pernille Bech Christensen; Interview with Bier. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

X-men First Class (20th Century Fox) “Origins” film set in the early 1960s, traces the beginnings of Magento and Professor X (played ably here by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy), and how the once-close friends and colleagues became bitter enemies. First half is slam-bang entertainment at its stylish best, »

Number 5 Is Alive (Again) in 'Short Circuit' Reboot

4 August 2011 10:18 PM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

There are signs of life once again in the long-unplugged "Short Circuit" remake.

Dimension Films is going forward with the new adventures of Number 5 (later "Johnny 5") as the studio has hired Tim Hill to direct the robot mayhem, according to Deadline.

The project originally had Steve Carr ("Paul Blart: Mall Cop") attached to direct with Dan Milano set to write the screenplay. Things were shut down back in 2009, and now the studio has turned the power back on.

Hill ("Hop," "Alvin and the Chipmunks") will supervise a new script about an experimental military robot designed to be the perfect weapon that becomes sentient (and lovable) after it's struck by lightning.

The original "Short Circuit" was released in 1986 and starred Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens (and his rather peculiar accent). Stevens and Johnny Five returned for the 1988 sequel, "Short Circuit 2."
