Supergirl season 2 episode 17 review: Distant Sun

Kayti Burt Mar 28, 2017

The Mon-El arc comes to a climax in Distant Sun, a family drama with one of Supergirl's scariest villains yet...

2.17 Distant Sun

Supergirl season two has played the long game with the Mon-El arc and, in Distant Sun, it came to a head. When Queen Rhea, Mon-El's mother, puts a bounty on Kara's head, it makes Mon-El choose: return home or let Kara continue to live with constant attacks on her life. Or at least that's the false dichotomy Rhea gives her son, hoping he doesn't notice that there are other options — they're just much messier. Little does she know, Kara has spent the last several months teaching Mon-El what it looks like to eschew the paths of least resistance and fight for something better, even and perhaps especially when it isn't easy.

Supergirl Round Table: Treble in Paradise

23 March 2017 1:30 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Mon-El's secret came out on Supergirl Season 2 Episode 16, causing Kara to break up with him over his deceit.

Luckily, the breakup didn't last long, and all it took was a musical crossover on The Flash Season 3 Episode 17  to get KaraMel back together!

Below, TV Fanatics Steven Ford, Christine Orlando, Kathleen Wiedel, Yana Grebenyuk, and Jim Garner talk the (short-lived) break up, Winn's legal trouble, and what they loved about the crossover.

Are you on Team Kara or Team Mon-El in this breakup?

Steve: I need to side with Mon-El here. Yes, he should have told Kara the truth, but it's not his fault he is a Daxam prince. He does not want to be the "face" of their race's future, all he cares about is Kara and moving forward with her. She'll come around.

Christine: Team Mon-El. Lying to her wasn’t right but she made it clear how much »

Supergirl Review: Season 2 Episode 16 Star-Crossed

21 March 2017 5:36 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Well, just as I predicted, in last night's Supergirl episode we find out that Supergirl is already pregnant thanks to Mon-El, and that Superbabies are indeed on the way! Or at least that would have been a much better story than what we got. Instead, this episode was split between two different stories and one of them was as predictable as rain in April.

The first storyline in Supergirl involves poor Winn and his new alien girlfriend Lyra, as she has been playing him the entire time (shocker) and used him to break into a museum to steal the Van Gogh Starry Night painting. Apparently, she has the same, and only, superpower that Mr. Terrific has in the comics and is invisible to technology. In fact, Batman used him to bring down his own creation; Brother Eye.

Winn, having not had much luck with women, even super-hot alien women, decides »

Hi everybody! Jim from Legends Of Tomorrow reviews here, filling in on what is probably the second best DC TV show. Everything Legends does, Supergirl does too, but where Legends keeps things light and fluffy, Supergirl adds in some soapiness and some real world parallels, sometimes to its detriment. Ultimately, Star-Crossed was excellent, only kept from perfection by being a touch on the nose.

The major plot of this episode is Mon-El’s family - his father, Lar Gand (Yes I Know!), played by God’s Not Dead But You’ll Wish You Were’s Kevin Sorbo, and his mother, »

Supergirl Season 2 Episode 16 Review: Star-Crossed

20 March 2017 7:10 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Does Mon-El deserve a second chance?

His secret is finally out in the open, and he chose to stay on Earth at the end of Supergirl Season 2 Episode 16 rather than return home with his parents.

So, where do they go from here?

First they will have to get through the musical crossover with The Flash, but assuming everything is not all fine and dandy by the end of it, it begs the question of what Mon-El is going to do now.

He's really only involved with the Deo because of Kara, and she's probably not going to be asking for his help any time soon. Are we in for several weeks of watching him beg and grovel?

Ugh, please no. Nobody wants that.

Mon-El has made a crazy amount of mistakes, but it's pretty clear he really does want to be a better man.

Does that mean Kara should forgive him? »

The biggest surprise — but only to Kara, of course — was that Mon-El is actually the Prince of Daxam, a title confirmed by the mysterious royals now known to be his parents, King Lar Gand (played by Kevin Sorbo) and Queen Rhea (played by Teri Hatcher).

Following the reveal of Mon-El’s royal blood, Kara ran the emotional gamut, beginning on disbelief and ending somewhere around pure, unadulterated fury. (At one point, »

'Supergirl' Recap: Does Mon-El's Identity End His Relationship with Kara?

20 March 2017 12:08 PM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

It took way too long, but Supergirl has finally revealed Mon-El's big secret. Mon-El is not just some guy from Daxam; he's the prince of the entire planet. In this episode, titled "Star-Crossed," Mon-El's parents, Queen Rhea (Teri Hatcher) and King Lar Gand (Kevin Sorbo), arrive on Earth looking for their son and, in the process, completely blow up Kara and Mon-El's romance. As threatening as Rhea is, Lar is just kind of there. The better story of the episode might be the implosion of another interplanetary relationship, the one between Winn and Lyra.

Supergirl Secrets Get Spilled! Stars Preview Kara/Mon-El 'Tensions' and a 'Dark Path' for Winn/Lyra

This Monday on Supergirl (The CW, 8/7c), secrets and lies prove to be kryptonite to two nascent relationships.

Barely weeks into their star-crossed romance, Kara will discover Mon-El’s connection to a pair of Daxamite newcomers, played by Teri Hatcher (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) and Kevin Sorbo (Hercules). Winn, similarly, meanwhile will discover a not-so-little something about Starhavenite girlfriend Lyra.

Can either coupling survive its trust-rattling reveal?

Kevin Sorbo And Teri Hatcher Make The Scene In New Supergirl Images, Character Identities Revealed

Although there was lamentably no new episode of Supergirl to speak of this week, you can rest assured that the series will return with a vengeance in four days when Teri Hatcher and Kevin Sorbo make their long awaited arrivals (okay, we’re not quite counting their cameo at the end of a recent episode).

When the trailer for “Star-Crossed” originally dropped, it quickly became apparent that the characters those two are playing have some kind of connection to Mon-El, who has been harboring a secret for the wealth of this season. And considering that he was addressed as “prince of Daxam,” many of us have put two and two together, assuming they could possibly be his parents.

This is further supported by the captions The CW applied to the official images released from said episode, labeling Sorbo as “Lar Gand” and Hatcher as “Rhea.” Those »

Are you ready for Mon-El's Big Secret to come out?

Does that make Teri Hatcher and Kevin Sorbo the King and Queen? That's our theory.

They're going to cause trouble for National City, and most likely create a rift between Kara and Mon-El.

As if that wasn't enough, Darren Criss shows up as the Music Meister and puts Kara under his spell!

Newswire: Kevin Sorbo to star in yet another faith-based movie

14 March 2017 8:52 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

At this point, Kevin Sorbo’s starred in enough faith-based movies to earn himself a place in Heaven, assuming that’s how these things work. But that hasn’t stopped Sorbo from signing on to another project that damns all us godless creatures. Deadline reports that TV’s Hercules will star in One Nation Under God, a film from director Lisa Arnold. And like God’s Not Dead, this film will also fail to separate church and state—according to the synopsis, one magnet school’s discussion about the missing “under God” reference in the pledge of allegiance will reach the nation’s capital. Sorbo will play a presidential candidate who picks up this crusade, which will presumably become the wedge issue he rides to the White House.

Sorbo was recently tapped for a guest-star gig on Supergirl, where he’ll play a villain. His name probably won’t be »

We’ve known for a while now that DC superfan Kevin Smith would direct his second episode of Supergirl this season, which is arriving a little sooner than expected. Even so, we doubt many of you out there will complain.

In “Distant Sun,” it appears that life will become exceedingly difficult for Kara Zor-El as she comes within reaching distance of the season finale. Keep in mind that one episode will precede this that will not only serve as a prologue to the musical crossover with The Flash, but also lets us in on the truth behind Mon-El. In short, expect a lot to happen within that hour of television.

When Smith’s next episode does get here, it will apparently see Kara attempting to evade aliens who are trying to collect a bounty on her. »

Steve: I can understand Kara wanting to inform National City of Cadmus' plans, but rules are rules and as Snapper said, they are there for a reason. Kara running with info like that without Snapper knowing the sources, let alone them being credible or not, was a risky move.

It's unfortunate because Snapper probably really was pulling for Kara, as he saw so much potential in her as a reporter.
