French Toast

You'll recognize the hair before you recognize the shell-shocked face of Kristin Scott Thomas as she plays Juliette in I've Loved You So Long. Her eyes are ravaged from seeing something no one should have to see. Her mouth is almost desiccated from lack of something — the chance to talk, enjoyment of life, perhaps even nourishment? As the story unfolds, we watch Juliette slowly return to a hint of daily normalcy after 15 years in prison, while we start to guess, and then learn, what she did to her child to land herself there. Some of us have indeed loved Scott Thomas so long. Perhaps it has been since The English Patient, in which she played the roiling-beneath-the-icy-surface Katharine. Perhaps our admiration grew out of Four Weddings and a Funeral, when she stole our hearts as the poshly quippy friend who didn't get the guy. Or, if you noticed her work »

Smith Back At Work Following Cancer Fight

6 October 2008 5:10 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Veteran actress Dame Maggie Smith is back at work following her reported battle with breast cancer.

The British screen legend underwent chemotherapy earlier this year in a bid to destroy cancerous cells.

She allegedly braved filming her role of schoolmistress Minerva McGonagall in the upcoming Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince - the sixth film in the wizard hero franchise - while having the energy-sapping treatments.

And now the 73-year-old is set to start shooting children's fantasy movie From Time to Time, which had been delayed from March.

A source tells Britain's Daily Express newspaper, "Maggie Smith hasn't been well and these projects do tend to ebb and flow in terms of getting everyone available at the right time and getting financing but they are definitely starting this time." »

What I Watched: From 'The Phantom of the Opera' to 'Gosford Park'

22 September 2008 12:59 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The idea for this article came out of how many films I have been watching lately in an effort to up my film IQ. I am not watching these films to be any kind of film historian, but to just have an overall knowledge of movies. It is also a nice way to make up for how many bad films I have to watch. I will still continue to do my Cinematic Revival editorials as well as hopefully bring you more of these recap pieces. My larger goal is to begin writing full reviews for all of these films when I don't write up the longer Cinematic Revival essays to improve on my writing as well as bolster my list of written reviews. That said, here is a look at what I watched at home last week and if you have any films to recommend that you watched recently (it »

Reports - Maggie Smith Battling Breast Cancer

19 March 2008 12:00 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Veteran actress Dame Maggie Smith is reportedly battling breast cancer and recovering from an emergency operation to remove a tumour.

The British screen legend reportedly underwent a course of chemotherapy to destroy cancerous cells, and is said to have bravely insisted on completing filming her role of schoolmistress Minerva McGonagall in the upcoming Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince - the sixth film in the wizard hero franchise - while having the energy-sapping treatments.

The double Oscar-winner was due to begin work on Julian Fellowes' film From Time To Time later this month, but reports suggest filming has been delayed in order for the 73-year-old to recover from her surgery.

According to the U.K.'s Daily Mail newspaper a source close to the star says, " (She is) typically brave and understated. The last thing she wants to do is make a fuss about it."

Smith's representative says, "We never comment on our client's private lives." »
