J.K. Rowling Is 1 of Only 65 People to Hold This Royal Honor
Jk Rowling had a busy and exciting day on Tuesday, when she received the Companion of Honor from Prince William at Buckingham Palace. The author described herself as feeling "deeply honored and proud" to be awarded the honor for her services in literature and philanthropy. It comes after a testing few days for Rowling, who was forced to finally make a statement about the controversial casting of Johnny Depp in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald. The Order of Companions of Honor was established in 1971 to recognize outstanding achievement in the arts and is an award only held by a limited number of 65 people at once. Rowling joins the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Stephen Hawking, Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Maggie Smith, and Delia Smith. The author said in a statement, "To be included in the distinguished and diversely talented company of the other Companions of Honor,

“To be included in the distinguished and diversely talented company of the other Companions of Honour, especially as a female writer, is a particular privilege,” Rowling said in a statement shared by the royals’ Twitter.

J.K. Rowling is now a royal Companion of Honor!

The Harry Potter author was granted the prestigious title by Prince William at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, saying she was "deeply honored and proud" to receive the honor, which is limited to 65 people "of distinction" at any one time.

"To be included in the distinguished and diversely talented company of the other Companions of Honor, especially as a female writer, is a particular privilege," added Rowling, who was honored for her services to literature and philanthropy.

The decoration comes nearly 20.5 years after the U.K. release of the first novel in her best-selling fantasy series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In 2001, she also received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, for services to children's literature.

Critic's Notebook: Strong Year for TV Actresses Means Stiff Competition for Golden Globes and SAG Awards

It hasn't been that long since the Golden Globe best actress field was thin enough that the HFPA could be swayed into oddball nominations like Callie Thorne for Necessary Roughness or Piper Perabo for Covert Affairs. Well played, USA.

It's only been a few years since the SAG Award for female actor in a drama could go to Maggie Smith for five minutes of expert sarcasm on Downton Abbey. Well, everybody loves a Dame.

Now, as a winter of award nominations looms, it's the best actress fields that are clearly the most competitive on the TV side, the categories most...

We're Getting More Branagh Poirot!

Chris here. Has everyone caught up to Murder on the Orient Express yet? For yours truly, it was set exactly in the spot in Europe that Clueless said we might be "whelmed" and our Eric Blume felt the same. But that hasn't stopped audiences from turning it into a modest hit, resulting in a global take of over $150 million - and that's enough for Fox to officially kick off a mini-franchise.

The new Agatha Christie Poirot films are keeping in line with the adaptations of the 70s, so next up will be Death on the Nile - expect Evil Under the Sun afterwards should Nile be a success too. Branagh is expected to return as director and star, and Orient Express's screenwriter Michael Green will be back as well. Get ready for more CGI exotic locales and modes of transportation because this one is set on a steamboat in Egypt.

Kenneth Branagh to Return in Murder on the Orient Express Sequel

Kenneth Branagh to Return in Murder on the Orient Express Sequel
20th Century Fox is moving forward with a sequel to the Agatha Christie adaptation Murder on the Orient Express, entitled Death On the Nile. The studio is bringing back Murder on the Orient Express writer Michael Green to pen the script. While there is no deal in place as of yet for filmmaker/star Kenneth Branagh, he is expected to return to the director's chair, while also coming back to star as detective Hercule Poirot. Whether Poirot's epic mustache also returns remains to be seen, but that seems likely as well.

Death on the Nile was first published in 1937, three years after Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express was published. The story finds Hercule Poirot on vacation in Cairo, Egypt, where he becomes entangled in a deadly love triangle. While Poirot is the only character from Murder on the Orient Express to cross over, the story features the same

Sherlock Gnomes: first trailer lands

Simon Brew Nov 8, 2017

The sequel to Gnomeo & Juliet edges closer. Meet Sherlock Gnomes...

Gnomeo & Juliet, you might recall, featured a lot of Elton John music (his company was behind the film), and the joy of Jason Statham as a Shakespearean talking garden gnome.

The sequel doesn’t have The Statham in it, sadly, but fingers crossed it can overcome that obstacle.

Sherlock Gnomes, then, instead features the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine, Ashley Jensen, Matt Lucas, Stephen Merchant, Mary J Blige and Johnny Depp. And the first trailer and synopsis have landed.

Trailer first, because that's the law…
