Altman Gushes Over British Stars At Festival Opening

8 November 2001 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

American movie maker Robert Altman was shellshocked at the galaxy of British stars at his disposal for new film Gosford Park. Speaking at the movie's world premier at the 45th London Film Festival Wednesday night, the director gushed over the talents of Richard E. Grant, Dame Maggie Smith, Stephen Fry and Charles Dance, who all star in the murder mystery. Altman said, "I spent a lot of the time just sitting in the corner with my mouth open, agog. It's not often as a director you get to have so much amazing talent in one room, and I admit to feeling quite awestruck on occasion." The movie is set in 1930s England and revolves around an elegant hunting party weekend at a country estate which brings together an aristocratic family, their friends - and a killer. Grant admitted, "We just all felt so privileged to be working with someone so iconic that no one misbehaved. Everyone was paid the same amount of money so there was no squabbling there and the way Robert works encouraged all the cast to sort of police each other." Comedian Fry added, "This film was not just a case of learning your lines. There are at least 16 different story lines going on within the film, so we had to pay attention." »
