Ultimate Gangster Collection — Contemporary
Due Out: May 21, 2013
The “Ultimate Gangster Collection: Classics“ and “Ultimate Gangster Collection: Contemporary” are available on Blu-ray 5/21
Who’S It For?
My wife hasn’t seen Mean Streets, The Untouchables, Goodfellas or Heat. So while I would normally say this is the perfect gift for guys on Father’s Day, it’s really perfect for my wife. These are movies that must be seen by every adult. Not only to they showcase how the ugly side of society has evolved, but it’s also the evolution of gangster crime. Every one of these films is brilliant, and yes, I’m including The Departed. Jack Nicholson’s performance has someone gotten a bad rap. I’m convinced if it wasn’t for Martin Scorsese zooming in on the rat at the very end, everyone would still worship this film. »

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Echo Bridge Entertainment for review. Director: Richard Turke. Writers: Thomas L. Ferguson and Richard Turke. Cast: Jillian Murray, Tom Sizemore, Hanna Hall, Deja Kreutzberg, Dave Parke, Timothy Ryan Cole and Jonas Fisch. Visible Scars is an indie thriller, which released in the middle of April. This title won "Best Picture" at the 2012 Shockfest and there is a reason why. This multi-genred film builds momentum as it moves through Acts II and III. Beginning slowly, Visible Scars draws the viewer in to a story of abuse, which later turns into murder. This title is a compelling film, with an intriguing conclusion. The story is dual in nature. The film begins with two sisters, who are kidnapped by a psychopathic man and killer. They are raised in poor conditions, until their new home is destroyed by an accidental fire. The film moves ahead several years. »

Eighteen years on, Heat is still an important, influential film. We look at how Michael Mann's research made for a powerful crime drama...
"This is based on observations. This is based on people I have met, people I've known, people I've sat with and talked to. Thieves, cops, killers. It's not derived from other cinema, it's based on research." Michael Mann
Cool, measured, melancholy and stylish, Michael Mann's Heat was a box office hit in 1995, and 18 years on, its impact can still be felt. A story about two weary men on either side of the law - one a cop married to his profession, the other a career criminal with no intention of going straight - Heat is also a movie about Los Angeles, in all its sparkly opulence and grimy malaise. Other directors have attempted to bottle some of Heat's »

When I saw Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead “remake” earlier this year, I couldn’t believe I was actually watching a horror remake. It was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale movement of churning out newer versions of old classics, with little success in the quality department of course. But I thought “surely this instance is a fluke, we couldn’t possibly have more than one good horror remake in the same year, right?” Then Franck Khalfoun came along, sternly pimp-slapped me across the face, and said “Matt, 2013 is the year of the horror remake,” and after watching his revamped version of Maniac (originally by William Lustig) – I absolutely, wholeheartedly f#cking agree.
Lustig’s original film was grimy, revolting, shock-and-awe horror with a slight voyeuristic twist – and Khalfoun keeps every essence of that description intact. Additionally though, Khalfoun’s film departs from Lustig’s straight-forward B-Movie, »

-- "By Some Miracle I Made It Out of There," (Atria Books), by Tom Sizemore, with Anna David
The cover photo of Tom Sizemore's autobiography, "By Some Miracle I Made It Out of There," is a perfect introduction for what's to come.
The 51-year-old actor stands looking up at the camera, instantly recognizable because of his work portraying tough-guy characters in such memorable 1990s films as "Saving Private Ryan," "Heat" and "Natural Born Killers."
His face, though, looks worn, and his eyes are those of a man who's been to hell and back.
And that's exactly what his book details – Sizemore's ascent to the height of cinema, working for the Steven Spielbergs and with the Robert De Niros of the world – and his drug-fueled descent that left him imprisoned and out of options.
"I was a guy who'd come from very little and risen to the top," writes Sizemore, »

One of my earliest memories is going to see "Jurassic Park" with my father (my parents didn't believe in little things called "ratings restrictions"). I don't remember much of the actual movie from the T. rex attack on because I spent it with my arms wrapped around my dad's neck staring at the back of the theater.
And yet, despite traumatizing my 4-year-old self, "Jurassic Park" has since managed to become one of my favorite movies (and books) of all time. In honor of this weekend's 3D re-release, I've cobbled together seven facts about the film. Read on, dinosaur aficionados!
1) It owes its existence to "ER": Director Steven Spielberg was initially working with "Jurassic Park" author Michael Crichton to develop a film version of what would later become "ER" when he heard about Crichton's dino-park horror show novel and decided to make that instead. But Spielberg »

The latest computer game to be turned into a movie is the best selling game from ‘Company of Heroes’. It’s a real-time strategy game in which you have to navigate your soldiers tanks across maps in order to defeat your enemies coming in at your front the opposite direction.
The new movie has a very Band of Brothers feel to it and actually has one character from that series playing the same role in the movie. Company of Heroes is released on DVD today and stars Tom Sizemore (Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan), Chad Collins (Lake Placid 2, Sniper Reloaded), Vinnie Jones (The Tomb, Snatch), Neal McDonough (Captain America: The First Avenger, “Band of Brothers”), and Jürgen Prochnow (The Da Vinci Code, Das Boot).

Tom Jolliffe looks at the possibilities for The Expendables 3....
The dust had barely settled from the first time eyes were laid upon a print of The Expendables 2 before rumours of the third film started flying around. Long before the final box office takings had been registered it seemed that the third was more or less a done deal. Of course the second one, like the first, was a huge hit. Now the first film had plenty of flaws. The second had just as many, though a more consistent tone, and bigger scope. So with yet more rumours about what’s to come, who’s in, who’s out in the third and possibly final (though I doubt it) Expendables outing this week, I take a look at what we have heard thus far, and perhaps what fans will hope for.
The key thing for the next film isn »
