'Groundhog Day' again and again: 7 Hollywood time loops from 'Star Trek' to 'Primer'

19 July 2014 9:45 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

(Cbr) It’s all "Groundhog Day’s" fault. The 1993 comedy hit, which stars Bill Murray as a snarky weatherman forced to re-live the same day over and over again until he becomes a better person, made the idea of a time loop a very popular narrative device for movies and television — and for good reason. There isn’t one person who hasn’t had a day they wish they could take a mulligan on. It’s a very relatable idea, and it’s easy to see why Hollywood keeps going back to the time-loop well. With "Edge of Tomorrow" becoming the latest member of the “Groundhog Day-ing It Club,” Spinoff looks back at some of the most memorable TV and movie do-overs. “Cause and Effect” ("Star Trek: The Next Generation") Actually, maybe we should blame this fifth season episode of Tng, which aired in 1992 — a year before "Groundhog Day. »

Highlighted by an incredible performance by Steven Weber, Crawlspace (review) is an enticing indie thriller that is sure to curl your toes and creep you out! The film's director and co-writer, Josh Stolberg (writer of Piranha 3Dd and Sorority Row), recently sat down with Dread Central to discuss it.

Stolberg talked about how this movie is a change of pace for him and where the idea came from. "It's a really personal film," Stolberg said. "I do a lot of studio movies, but it's nice to put together one of these indies and feel really proud of it at the end of the day, which I definitely am."

He continues, "I was working with a buddy of mine named Nick Taravella, who I co-wrote the script with, and he found a couple of real-life stories. I had been looking for another film to direct, it had been about a year »

If a 'Weekend at Bernie's' Remake Ever Happens, This Is Exactly How It Should Go Down

3 July 2014 2:00 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

There has been a flurry of super-important, nostalgia-drenched movie anniversaries recently, including, but not limited to Tim Burton's "Batman" (25 years), "Gremlins" (30 years), "Ghostbusters" (30 years) and "The Karate Kid" (30 years). But one movie that seems to have been overlooked completely is "Weekend at Bernie's" (find out where to watch) which came out 25 years ago this week. The story of a couple of yuppies who try to pretend that their dead boss hasn't died at all, it was a surprise hit, pulling in double its production budget at the box office and spawning a goofy, guilty pleasure sequel. (It did get a Blu-ray release earlier this summer, so you can now watch all of the icky '80s tomfoolery in HD.)

Even though "Weekend at Bernie's" was far from a phenomenon (as evidenced by the deafening silence around its anniversary), you can bet one thing: it will be remade. Look no »

'Law & Order: Svu' delivers their verdict on the Daniel Tosh rape joke controversy

26 February 2014 9:30 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

At what point must we hold art accountable for whatever dangerous ideas or actions it may incite? It's a question that's plagued artists and consumers of art since time immemorial -- and "Law & Order: Svu" tackled it head-on on Wednesday (Feb. 26).

In the episode, titled "Comic Perversion," "Svu" did that "ripped from the headlines" thing they do so well, taking on the 2012 controversy surrounding comedian Daniel Tosh and his ill-advised rape jokes -- making clear where the show and its writers stand on the debate that's troubled the comedy world ever since.

Standing in for Tosh in the "Svu" world is Josh Galloway (played to the sleazy hilt by Jonathan Silverman), a hack frat comedian who we meet during his set at Tsu. As the drunk bros in the crowd eat up his every misogynistic word, Renee (Skyler Day, a familiar face from last season's "Girl Dishonored" episode) and others from her S. »

The director and writer of “Weekend at Bernie’s” have sued Fox and MGM over the studios’ alleged failure to pay them profits from the comedy.

Ted Kotcheff, who directed, and screenwriter Robert Kane filed the action Friday in state court in Los Angeles, alleging breach of contract, breach of covenant and implied faith, improper accounting and violations of the California business and professional code. It seeks a declaratory judgment.
