The AfterEllen.com 2009 Visibility Awards

21 December 2009 6:07 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

In our annual Visibility Awards, we formally recognize the people who have positively or negatively impacted lesbian and bi visibility in American entertainment during the year. (See previous years here: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004.)

From Best Movie to Worst Song to Lesbian/Bi Woman of the Year, these awards recognize the television shows, movies, music, books and people who entertained, inspired, or disappointed us in 2009.

Last year, some of the category winners were chosen by both the AfterEllen.com staff and AfterEllen.com readers. This year, AfterEllen.com staff and contributing writers chose the winners for each category, as readers will be given the opportunity to vote on a wider range of topics and categories in our first annual Lesbian/Bi Women's Choice Awards in January.

Once again this year, we've included international people, shows and movies as a reflection of the increasing awareness of lesbian and bisexual visibility around the world made possible by the Internet. »

TV producer Steve Stark has full plate

16 December 2009 4:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Less than a year after venturing on his own as an independent producer, Steve Stark is filming his third pilot and has a half-dozen other projects in the works.

Stark, a longtime development executive at Paramount TV and Columbia TriStar TV, ran Kelsey Grammer's CBS Par-based Grammnet Prods. for seven years before going solo early this year with the launch of Steve Stark Prods.

"With every job I take, I say I can't possibly work harder," Stark said. "I'm working harder then ever now, but the rewards are greater. There is an incredible flexibility in selling directly to the networks; I am able to do things a little faster and be a little more agile."

Stark is in production on USA Network's hourlong pilot "Facing Kate," which stars Sarah Shahi as a lawyer who becomes a professional mediator.

In the past 11 months, his company also produced two pilots »

Moonlighting | Cable girl

30 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

I've tried so hard to swoon over Moonlighting but . . . can't

Oh, how I was looking forward to watching Moonlighting now that they are showing it on Zone-Romantica – now prosaically, and disappointingly, rebranded CBS Drama. I can't remember why it was never on in our house – it must have been on after my bedtime or early enough to clash with Coronation Street, either of which was enough (in those ancient, pre-vcr days, children) to place it firmly out of reach forever. I only saw glimpses during its original 1985-89 run when I was round at other friends' houses or left in the charge of lackadaisical babysitters – who were, of course, the kind my mother would fire instantly upon her return after a single, glorious TV-and-sweets-filled stint.

I remember the beeyootiful blonde lady and the cocky, handsome man. I remember the sub-sexual sparring (even if I didn't entirely understand it – by 1989 I »

CinemaSpy's Week-End TV Recap (Nov. 7)

7 November 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Many television viewers — and pop culture critics — are wondering just what's up with Fox's Fringe. Watchers of the show were caught unaware this past week, not realizing that the network was airing a new episode of the skein until they read about it the next day in various news outlets. Fringe simply wasn't in the listings. People's DVRs didn't pick up the show, because Fox was listed as running Game 7 of the World Series. People believed that the show would be absent one more week.

All of this is raising serious questions about how seriously Fox is treating the show, or indeed, if they're trying to kill it. The Thursday night time slot was their first error in judgment, but lapses in playing to the viewer base by neglecting to promote episodes and air times is something else entirely.

The impression left is that Fox used first-run programming as a backup to a sporting event. »

Remote View: 'Eastwick' Moving At Its Own Pace

23 October 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

In the 1987 movie adaptation of John Updike's novel The Witches of Eastwick, the "little devil" Darryl Van Horne beds the three heroines in the first act.

In the television series airing on ABC (in Canada it broadcasts on A), we're five episodes in and Van Horne hasn't slept with anyone yet. But that's not for his lack of trying.

It makes sense that the television show, plotted over at least a season and maybe longer, would be paced differently. But that means we get much deeper into the lives of the three women: artist Roxie Torcoletti (Rebecca Romijn), journalist Joanna Frankel (Lindsay Price) and nurse Kat Gardener (Jaime Ray Newman).

These names are different than those of the characters from the film or the book, and that's because in the mythology of this series, the arrival of Darryl Van Horne is not the first time a strange, charismatic man »

Toronto: Nicolas Cage makes an inspired 'Bad Lieutenant,' plus bad boy Michael Cera

15 September 2009 3:43 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

In his schlocky paycheck movies, of which there are way too many, Nicolas Cage often pumps up his energy in a false, blowhard way. He glowers and throws tantrums and over-italicizes his emotions, as if trying to prove to his audience (or maybe to himself) that he's still got it, that he really means it, man. He does the same thing in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Werner Herzog's demon-rich, loopy, fascinating, and improbably entertaining remake of the 1992 Abel Ferrara dark-side-of-everything cult classic. The difference is that Cage is now doing his strenuous, bug-eyed intensity thing in character. He plays a New Orleans homicide detective named Terence McDonagh who gets hooked on drugs -- mostly cocaine and heroin -- and is always getting high, on the job and off. Unlike the Harvey Keitel character in Ferrera's film, McDonagh first comes to his addiction "innocently," when he's given »

That Witch! Cybill Shepherd Cast In 'Eastwick'

25 August 2009 9:31 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Cybill Shepherd has been around television her whole life and has been successful in both television and movies.  Who can forget Moonlighting, the series that put Bruce Willis on our radars and became the poster-child for how you should never let the sexual tension between two characters lead to romance on a series.  It seems that this fall Cybill will be moonlighting on a new show called Eastwick on ABC.  She joins the new series that is based on the novel The Witches of Eastwick, by John Updike, and stars Rebecca Romijn, Jaime Ray Newman, and Lindsay Price.

Eastwick follows three very different women who find they suddenly possess very unique powers when a mysterious (and very handsome) man arrives in their small New England town.  As their fantasies become reality and they learn about their mystical abilities their small town is turned upside-down.

Shepherd Left Elvis After Late-night Drugs Offer

15 August 2009 7:01 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Cybill Shepherd walked out on Elvis Presley when she realised his drug problems were spiralling out of control.

The tragic rock icon was romancing the clean-cut young star when he offered her prescription pills one night when they were getting ready for bed.

Shepherd recalls, "He said, 'Here, take these,' and he had pills in his hands and I said, 'Aren't you gonna take some of them?' and he said, 'Well, I've already had mine.'

"He was almost already asleep and I went and flushed them down the toilet, returned his emerald and diamond ring and just said, 'Thankyou, but I can't.'"

Presley refused to believe Shepherd had ended their romance and demanded she ditch filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich if she wanted to stay with him, during one unexpected late night visit months later.

Shepherd adds, "I don't think it had sunk in that I had already ended it." »

Clementine Ford Confirms Relationship with Linda Perry

18 May 2009 8:50 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

This week's Soap Opera Digest magazine features an interview with out actress Clementine Ford, in which she opens up about her move to daytime television, her girlfriend and why talking about being gay on a soap opera is like asking what it's like to be straight in a dentist's office. (Answer: "It's just my life.")

While Ford doesn't find the news about her sexuality to be all that noteworthy, she was warm and open about her relationship with singer/songwriter Linda Perry, telling Soap Opera Digest:

Every time I do an interview, she asks, 'Did you mention me?' We go to events together and we don't try to hide anything. We're just a couple. We're both like, "I can't wait to show you off."

The couple had a chance to do just that at last month's charity event, An Evening with Women, which was spearheaded by Perry herself.

Cybill Shepherd couldn't be more "proud and happy" for Clementine

13 May 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Cybill Shepherd rocks.

Sure, we have straight allies everywhere these days, now that being a Friend O’ The Gays is trendy. But Shepherd has been front and center, speaking out for gay and lesbian rights for over a decade. So, I was thrilled to see, thanks to a tip from AfterEllen.com reader Christine, that she received the National Ally for Equality award at the Hrc Atlanta Dinner last week.

Cybill was entertaining, as always, with funny stories about her time on The L Word and thoughtful reflections on her experiences as a human rights activist and recent progress toward Lgbt equality. And, of course, she mentioned daughter Clementine Ford’s coming out, saying, “I couldn’t be more proud and more happy.”

Here’s the speech, in its entirety.

More good news for Cybill Shepherd fans: Lifetime recently started airing the hilarious sitcom, Cybill, every day at 8 a.m. »

Last weekend celebrities came out in style to attend the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center's annual fundraiser An Evening with Women, and we have photos, photos, and more photos! (All photos are from Getty unless otherwise specified.)

Our L.A. Scene columnist Sarah Witness is going to cover it in more detail in her next column, but here's a quick rundown of the event.

Gina Gershon (Love Ranch, Bound) was scheduled to host, but had to back out at the last minute when her shooting schedule was changed, so Jennifer Coolidge (Nip/Tuck, Best in Show) gamely stepped in to Mc, entertaining the crowd with lines like, "a word about Mormons — what the f--k?" (pause) "I realize that was more than one word."
