Sam Shepard is Butch Cassidy in trailer for Mateo Gil’s Blackthorn

20 December 2010 10:14 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Earlier this year we saw a behind the scenes peek at Blackthorn, Mateo Gil’s western starring Sam Shepard, Stephen Rea and Eduardo Noriega. The film picks-up years after the end of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Butch (Shepard) as an older man living out the remaining years of his life as a horse breeder in Bolivia. Wanting to see home one last time, he heads off to the Us, along the way meeting Ernesto, a mine technician who is on the run after robbing a mine. In need of money to finish his trip, and likely remembering his days running from the law, Cassidy agrees to help Ernesto.

We were pretty excited at the prospect of a new western and one that was looking promising from the behind the scenes footage and now that we’ve got an actual trailer, I’m even more excited because it »

The Notable Films of 2011: Part Two

19 December 2010 2:05 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Beaver

Opens: March 23rd 2011

Cast: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence

Director: Jodie Foster

Summary: A depressed toy company CEO with a failed marriage starts to wear a beaver puppet on his hand as a form of therapy, much to the initial bemusement of his family. He soon begins talking only through the character.

Analysis: This time last year, excitement was quietly brewing for "The Beaver". Gibson's drunken tirade a few years before hand wasn't forgotten, but enough time had passed that this looked to be the year of a potential comeback for the actor.

The thriller remake "Edge of Darkness" and this were his first on screen roles in ten years, 'Beaver' is also his "Maverick" co-star Foster's return to the director's chair fifteen years after her last feature. The script topped the 2008 Black List and scored rave reviews for its blend of sophisticated humor and sad pathos, »

Dermot Mulroney Takes Time to Exhale After "Inhale"

3 December 2010 7:56 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Nearly halfway through talking to Dermot Mulroney I asked about an indie film he made last year, though I struggled to remember the name. "'The Family Tree'?" he said, while watching me squirm. Yeah, that's the one. "I don't know whether that hit the theater, maybe for a week here or there. I know it was at the Seattle Film Festival."

"Really?" I wondered, thinking that I would've at least heard if the film co-starring Hope Davis and Christina Hendricks had been in theaters already. (It's only played the festival circuit so far.)

"If that sees the light of day, I'd bet you enjoy it," Mulroney assures me. "It's definitely got some laughs in it."

Uncertainty is not a feeling usually associated with the work of Mulroney, whose ability to exude a cool confidence has made him a go-to guy for Hollywood romantic comedies and auteurs such as the late Robert Altman, »

A Legacy of His Own: A Doug Liman Profile (Part 2)

6 November 2010 3:36 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With his latest film Fair Game released later this year, Trevor Hogg profiles the career of director Doug Liman in the second of a two part feature... read part one.

“I’ve always been a huge action film fan and a couple of friends of mine were in marriage therapy,” explained screenwriter Simon Kingberg as to the origins of Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005). “The way they were talking about it sounded kind of aggressive and mercenary. I just thought it would make an interesting template for a relationship inside of an action film.” Mayhem and chaos ensues when two married assassins are contracted to kill each other. “One of the ways that you write it is that all of the action sequences in the film have to be, in some form, expressions of where these characters are in their marriage… Instead of two people having a fight at the dinner table about the salt, »

Fair Game

Directed by: Doug Liman

Cast: Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, David Andrews, Ty Burrell, Sam Shepard

Running Time: 1 hr 48 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: November 5, 2010

Plot: Based on the books, “Fair Game” and “Politics of Truth” this tells the story of Valerie Plame (Watts), a CIA operative whose identity was revealed during America’s decision to invade Iraq.

Who’S It For? Like good movies? That should be enough. Plus, we’ve all lived through the headlines of Plame’s story, now is a chance to understand it even better.

Expectations: The brilliance of me, Jeff Bayer, is that I have a very short-term memory. When I sat down to watch this film I only new Watts, Penn and Liman were involved. Based on the title Fair Game I assumed it was a drama/thriller. After a couple of minutes, I knew exactly what “based on a true story” I was about to see. »

As an undercover CIA Operations Officer specializing in the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, Plame became an internationally renowned celebrity when the White House leaked her identity to the Washington Post’s Robert Novak in retaliation to a scathing op-ed authored by her husband Joe Wilson (Sean Penn). What on earth could Wilson have written to get the White House so damn infuriated with him that they would put his wife and all of her past associates’ lives at risk? Good things come to those who wait and for those who feel as though they've suffered through a year of largely uninspired films up to now will likely breathe a sigh of relief at the sound of names like Darren Aronofsky, Sofia Coppola and Peter Weir. 'Tis the season for Jim Carrey to take a pay cut to star in a gay romance like "I Love You Phillip Morris" or Javier Bardem is whispering sweet nothings to spirits in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu's "Biutiful" rather than Julia Roberts.

There is the naughty -- Kristen Stewart stripping in "Welcome to the Rileys," the would-be terrorists of the Brit comedy "Four Lions," or the evil Santa in "Rare Exports" -- and the nice -- the tap-dancing lovers in "Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench," the glory of James Franco's daredevil surviving "127 Hours" and Colin Firth's verbally-challenged royal conquering his stutter in "The King's Speech. »

Trailer for Inhale Explores Messy Results of 'Organ Tourism'

Ick. On a list of things that make me uneasy, the human organ black market would definitely be top five. Maybe Diane Kruger and Dermont Mulroney's characters in Inhale feel the exact same way. But their daughter needs a lung! They are somewhat wealthy, but not rich enough to bypass the waiting list in the U.S. And did I mention that their daughter is going to die without this lung? So it's a tough spot to begin with, but when Sam Shepard and Rosanna Arquette come along with some intriguing news about organ availability in Mexico, things start to get really messy. »

Dermot Mulroney is one of those "That Guy" character actors that's been around for years, steadily working and always clocking in solid performances. It also kind of seems like we're seeing more of him since David Fincher's Zodiac and Joel & Ethan Coen's Burn After Reading (but, that might just be me). With the thriller Inhale, we've got Mulroney in the lead opposite the lovely Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Sam Shepard (Assassination Of Jesse James), Rosanna Arquette »

Epix Axes Nashville Drama 'Tough Trade' But Says It Will Stay In The Series Business

5 October 2010 7:15 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Is Epix ready to commit to a scripted series order? That is what creative types have been pondering in the past few days, following the demise of the fledging premium cable channel/broadband service's first scripted pilot Tough Trade. It was groomed to be Epix's first original scripted series. But 20 months after originally greenlighting it, Epix, a partnership of Lionsgate, Viacom and MGM, has pulled the plug on the project. The show, created by Chris Offutt and produced by Lionsgate TV, revolved around three generations of a Nashvile music dynasty and starred Sam Shepard, Trace Adkins, Cary Elwes, Lucas Black and Joey Lauren Adams. The project, which was once set up at TNT, also boasted big names behind the camera: Weeds creator Jenji Kohan was executive producer/showrunner, Gavin Hood directed the pilot, T-Bone Burnett served as executive musical producer, and Sean and Bryan Furst also executive produced. Originally, Epix »

Mark Duplass, Dianne Wiest and Sam Shepard Cast in Lawrence Kasdan’s ‘Darling Companion’

24 September 2010 6:00 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Though he's been announced as attached to a few projects over the past couple years, Lawrence Kasdan hasn't written or directed a produced film since Dreamcatcher in 2003. (He has done script work, like the polish on the script for the action version of Paradise Lost that Alex Proyas just signed to direct.) But now Kasdan will direct Darling Companion from a script he wrote with Meg Kasdan, and he's just added Mark Duplass, Dianne Wiest and Sam Shepard to the cast. THR notes that Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline, Richard Jenkins and Elizabeth Moss were already cast in the film. The story is unusual; I can't tell if this is going to be pure tearjerking sap or something that promises sentiment on the surface before diving into something more complicated. The story follows "what happens when a man loses his wife’s beloved dog after a wedding in the Rockies and »
