What's it like being the voice of the hippo in the Madagascar films and the wife of Will Smith?
Hello! How's Cannes?
It's very busy and very beautiful. Oh my goodness. Usually when I have come it's rainy. The first time here I was 20, for Menace II Society. Oh boy, I didn't know anything then. My outfits were just … woah. (1)
Did you have to sleep on the floor?
No, fortunately not. It was a good time to just be naive and young and know absolutely nothing.
Do you ever feel limited doing cartoons? (2)
You have as much space as you need. If I go into a session and I do something and go: "I wasn't happy with that, I'd like to do that again," they say: "Ok, not a problem." Whereas, in live action, I tell ya what: it's best that you figure it out that day. You can go back, »

HollywoodNews.com: The Festival de Cannes celebrated Haiti: Carnival in Cannes Friday night, a benefit event presented by Giorgio Armani in support of Sean Penn’s J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P Hro), Paul Haggis’ Artists for Peace and Justice (Apj) and Petra Nemcova’s Happy Heart’s Fund (Hhf), for their united and extraordinary work in Haiti. The charities? unity reflects their collective belief that more can be accomplished by working in partnership than alone. This event is the first of its kind for the Festival de Cannes since holding benefit screenings in 1984 and 1996. Additionally, this is the first time that three charities have come together with the support of the festival for one very important cause. Preliminary calculations of money raised total over $2 million.
An A-list crowd “the sort only the Festival de Cannes can procure” joined Penn, Haggis and Nemcova to offer their support. Guests included Gerard Butler, »

This good looking chap is Douglas Booth. He’s playng Romeo in an upcoming adaptation of the Shakespeare drama, with Hailee Steinfeld as Julie. Booth, Ed Westwick and producer Julian Fellowes held a party celebrating the wrap of the film, which has a February launch date for next year.
It will do better than a good number of Cannes films which often get distribution but not a lot of eyeballs.
One Cannes film that many will see is the most commercial film here, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. The film with the least aspirations of the three so far, M3:emw, is a colorful, noisy carnival that frankly left me cold and bored. The main stars were in Cannes to promote it, however, including Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Martin Short (he plays a seal) and Jessica Chastain, who »

In this third installment of the massively popular Dreamworks children’s franchise Madagascar 3, the director trio team of Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath and Conrad Vernon team up with writer Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale). The result is a surprisingly well-made circus of color that bursts at the seams with great visual gags. It’s usually the third film in animated trilogies where filmmakers typically get lazy, but there is a lot of effort to detail and storytelling to keep things moving here. The heaviest criticism to levy against a film intended for children is the lack of a moral compass and excessive (and sometimes disturbing) cartoonish violence, preventing Madagascar 3 from being a total knockout.
For those unfamiliar with the previous two films in the series, Madagascar centers around a quartet of escaped zoo animals led by an adventurous-but-shy Lion named Alex (Ben Stiller). He and his three friends, »

Sean Penn was in a jovial mood Friday night at the Cannes Film Festival where he hosted a benefit for Haiti, which raised about $1.5 million. The actor and activist hosted a starry affair attended by David Schwimmer, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Diane Kruger, Jessica Chastain, Michelle Rodriguez, Ewan MacGregor, Gerald Butler and Penn's onetime gal pal Petra Nemcova, among others. At one point Penn joked to the crowd: "I want to ask every woman here to turn to the man next to her and say I won't sleep with you tonight unless you make a big donation." Two U2 VIP »

All I heard was a voice, and I knew that Chris Rock was behind me. My third day in Cannes was full of surprises, but that was not one of them since I was about to walk into the press conference for "Madagascar 3." While an unlikely choice for a film at Cannes, the animated feature, which was playing out of competition, was the celebrity event of choice. All of the stars and more were in attendance, including Jada Pinkett Smith, Ben Stiller, Jessica Chastain, Chris Rock, Martin Short, and David Schwimmer. "We went to opening night and saw our cartoon, and we thought 'Do we deserve to be here?'" co-director Tom McGrath asked at the press conference. "But the great thing about Cannes is that it's a festival for all kinds of films." The movie is in 3D, and McGrath said that they wanted "to create something surreal, abstract, »

On the third day of the Cannes Film Festival it was a day for familiar names taking the spotlight on the famed Palais steps. First up tonight was the return of DreamWorks Animation. One way or another DreamWorks Animation honcho Jeffrey Katzenberg finds a way to bring his latest product to the Croisette, whether in the form of a press stunt, junket, competition or as was the case tonight with out-of-competition entry Magagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted which debuted in the prime 7:30Pm slot on the first Friday of the festival. Of course with the sequel using nearby Monte Carlo as a key backdrop for the action, and Europe in its title, this was a no-brainer for Cannes Fest director Thierry Fremaux who has repeatedly called DreamWorks Animation a “friend of the festival” and loves having a fun 3D movie toon in the mix. Sean Penn had some harsh words at a press event for his Haiti: Carnival in Cannes fundraiser on May 17, TheWrap reports. ”The reason we have Haiti fatigue is because there was never a commitment in the first place,” Penn said. ”It’s not only celebrities who went for a day. It’s the whole f—ing world. It’s all of you.”
Penn also called on President Barack Obama to step in once again. “It is time for our formidable and elegant president to stand side by side with the new president of Haiti.”

Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock, left) is safe in the arms of Vitaly the Tiger (Bryan Cranston, right) in DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3: Europe’S Most Wanted, to be released by Paramount Pictures.
In theaters on June 8, Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo, and Melman the Giraffe are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple and of course, King Julien, Maurice and the Penguins are all along for the comedic adventure. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover: a traveling circus, which they reinvent . Madagascar style.
The global success of 2005.s .Madagascar. and its lively 2008 sequel .Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa,. proved that while the films were broad comedies with plenty of action, they were, above all, well-told stories with universal themes audiences related to. For the filmmakers, it was never enough to just go for the laughs.

It was a reunion of old (and news) pals when Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett, Chris Rock and David Schwimmer gathered for the photo call for Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes. "Schwim," Rock (who plays Marty the zebra) yelled when arriving at the same time as his Melman the giraffe costar. But it was Stiller who unknowingly doubled up on "Schwim" as his Alex the lion character photo-bombed the two as they made their way down the Croisette. When the cast, which also included Jessica Chastain and Martin Short, walked out onto the terrace to be photographed, »
