Homegrown German Films Makes Global Showing

19 May 2017 9:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

While German-language films screening at this year’s Cannes Film Festival are scant in number, German talent and market titles nevertheless offer a glimpse of current and upcoming productions, ranging in subject matter from prehistoric adventure and Nazi-era intrigue to modern day terrorism and romance in the face of sorrow.

This year’s crop of local productions follows a standout year for German films, which not only made an impressive showing on the international festival circuit but also at both the domestic and international box office. Maren Ade’s Oscar-nominated “Toni Erdmann,” a bittersweet comedy about an aging father trying to reconnect with his distant, workaholic daughter, enjoyed a stellar year, winning a slew of international prizes, including five European Film Awards, sweeping this year’s German Film Awards, and leading to Ade’s selection for this year’s Cannes competition jury.

Charlize Theron is Atomic Blonde as second trailer lands online

11 April 2017 8:03 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Author: Zehra Phelan

Charlize Theron is proving to be a real force to be reckoned with in her combat skills, coming off the back of her appearance in Fast and Furious 8 where she plays villainous Cipher who will stop at absolutely nothing in her world domination, comes the second trailer for her John Wickesq outing, Atomic Blonde.

In the first trailer, we witnessed Theron kicking and punching her way through a horde of men before finding out she was, in fact, a secret agent tasked with a mission to stop her fellow agents from being picked off one by one with a less than gentlemanly James McAvoy in tow.

Atomic Blonde, which made its debut at SXSW Film Festival back in March, met with a mixed reaction from critics who described it as ‘technically dazzling’ yet has an ‘empty plot’, is being described as a sleek action with gritty sexuality. »

SXSW Film Review: ‘Atomic Blonde’

13 March 2017 12:36 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Toward the end of “Atomic Blonde,” David Leitch’s hyperviolent, hyperstylized action pic set in Berlin just before the fall of the wall, Charlize Theron’s MI6 superwoman Lorraine Broughton is tasked with protecting a Stasi defector. He’s been wounded on the street, and she drags him into a building lobby. “Wait here,” she says, and proceeds to do brutal battle with waves of henchmen up an elevator, down a staircase, into an apartment, out of the apartment, with a gun, without a gun, with an unloaded gun, with stray bits of furniture, back out into the street, into a car, forward in the car, and then in reverse. The scene lasts a good five minutes, and does not contain a single obvious cut. It is worth the price of admission alone.

It’s a good thing, too, because the rest of the film can’t help but feel »

Atomic Blonde Red Band Trailer Is Nuts… But, Is It Good?

10 March 2017 10:01 AM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

After Mad Max: Fury Road, and others, you might think that Charlize Theron as the main character in an action vehicle was not only a no-brainer, but something to jump to the top of the must-see list. Atomic Blonde is coming to prove things one way or the other, and a new red band trailer hopes to suck you in, but is this trailer the sell it thinks it is?

The film is based on a graphic novel and has Theron starring as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 agent during the Cold War who is sent to investigate the murder of another agent. If the trailer is any sort of true guide, this is a high-octane ride filled with fights, chases, and a decent amount of sex. If the graphic novel is a true guide, it’s a gritty, somewhat crazy investigation that focuses on a character who is somewhat lost within herself. »
