Colin Farrell and Kiefer Sutherland's movie Phone Booth is finally set for a February 2003 release after much delay following a series of real-life sniper shootings. The film, about a man trapped in a phone booth by a sniper, was pulled from its November release date because of last month's high profile string of sniper shootings around America's capital Washington DC.. Joel Schumacher, director of the Twentieth Century Fox flick, made the announcement this week. Real-life sniper suspects John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo were arrested last month and are awaiting trial. »

DC Sniper May Halt Colin & Kiefer Flick

15 October 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Upcoming Hollywood thriller Phone Booth is set to be delayed because of the plot's similarity with the current sniper attacks in and around Washington D.C. Eight people have been killed by a sniper this month, leading local citizens of the nation's capital and the neighboring Maryland and Virginia states living in fear while police try to track down the assailant. And now executives at 20Th Century Fox are deciding the fate of Phone Booth, which stars Minority Report star Colin Farrell as a man stuck in a phone booth at the mercy of crazed sniper, 24 actor Kiefer Sutherland. Director Joel Schumacher is keen to avoid a delay and he says comparisons between the flick and the real-life events are "different cases" and he hadn't even thought about negative parallels. Joel says, "I mean, there are many serial killers that haven't been caught. Should they not release Red Dragon?" Phone Booth has already taken a long time to finally be made. The movie has been in development for some time and at various points Jim Carrey and Will Smith were set to star, but dropped out. »

It's by the book: Schumacher has NL's 'Number 23'

14 October 2002 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Joel Schumacher is in negotiations to direct New Line Cinema's The Number 23 for Firm Films. Penned by first-time British writer Fernley Phillips, the project is a psychological thriller centering on a man who is obsessed with an obscure book titled The Number 23 and becomes convinced that the book is based on his own life as the number 23 is woven throughout his life. Firm Films' Beau Flynn is producing the project. The company's Tripp Vinson is executive producing alongside Energy Entertainment's Brooklyn Weaver, who is Phillips' manager. Phillips also will receive a producing credit through his newly formed Fingerling Films banner. New Line creative executive Keith Goldberg and executive vp production Richard Brener will oversee for the studio. The studio acquired the project as a spec script for low- against mid-six figures eight months ago (HR 2/12). Schumacher, repped by CAA, directed 20th Century Fox's Phone Booth, which premiered last month at the Toronto International Film Festival. He is in postproduction on MGM's Veronica Guerin. »

'Star' Turns for Will Smith and J.Lo?

1 October 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Will Smith and Jennifer Lopez are being lined up to take lead roles in a remake of classic film A Star Is Born. Director Joel Schumacher is currently courting studio backing for the project, and has the two major names lined up awaiting the greenlight. He told music TV channel MTV, "Who knows if the movie will go, but it seems to be a desire of the studio to do it. And now let's see if all of the ducks are in order." Smith has been interested in the project for a number of years and has recently spoken of J.Lo's eagerness to jump aboard. He said, "Jennifer loves the concept. What I like about Jennifer is that you could go Latin. The music and the environment could be the Latin world, which would be different from all of the other versions." And veteran filmmaker Schumacher - the man behind The Lost Boys and Batman And Robin, among many others - is a big fan of Smith. He says, "I know Will better than I know Jennifer. I did a public service announcement for education with Jennifer and she was breathtakingly beautiful and charming. Will I know better and we've talked about working together. And he's just a consummate gentleman and just a lovely human being." A Star Is Born has been made four times, most famously in 1954 with James Mason and Judy Garland. »
