Inglourious Basterds (Blu-Ray/DVD Review)

17 December 2009 1:10 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Here Come the Basterds

The Basterds have come to Blu-Ray.  As anticipated as Chinese Democracy, but not nearly as disappointing, Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds made its Blu-ray and DVD this past Tuesday.

Dropped into German occupied France, a band of Jewish-American soldiers have one mission- kill as many Nazis as possible.  Led by Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), The Basterds carry out their goal with a total disregard for human life or proper spelling.  Whether scalping Nazi soldiers or beating them with baseball bats, they carry out their task with a truly “exploitation” level of violence. Their acts become legendary within the Third Reich, even sticking in the craw of one Adolph Hitler.

Inglourious Basterds is World War II as fought by battalions of film geeks.  Taratino stays true to his video store clerk roots invoking 70’s WWII exploitation flicks like Escape To Athena (1979), Kelly’S Heroes (1970), and of …

'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' 40th anniversary: Life.com unearths rare James Bond photos

14 December 2009 9:25 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Forty years ago, the producers of the James Bond film franchise had a doozy of a dilemma on their hands : Who would replace the indelible Sean Connery as 007 in their next chapter, On Her Majesty's Secret Service? Connery had already appeared in five Bond films and it wasn't exactly news to anyone that the Scottish star was chafing at the restrictions of the role and his contract. So when he walked, the producers scrambled to find their replacement. It was no easy feat, to say the least. The Bond brain trust screen-tested a bunch of suave, '60s British …

The movie star is slated to lead the cast of Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica's biopic, The Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers.

Spider-Man director takes on the Yeti

30 September 2009 3:07 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Spider-man director Sam Raimi is to produce a horror movie called Refuge about a Yeti terrorising a remote town.

British director Corin Hardy will helm the project, based on a script by British writer Tom De Ville, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Raimi's Ghost House Pictures has agreed to produce the movie for independent film studio Mandate Pictures.

The Yeti - also called the Abominable Snowman - is a mythical apeman native to the Himalayas. The creature is the equivalent of North America's Bigfoot or Sasquatch.

It won't be the screen debut for the Yeti. Several of the creatures were in last year's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and it was also seen in 1954's The Snow Creature, 1957's The Abominable Snowman and in the animated film Monsters Inc.

Many movies and TV shows have featured Bigfoot. The excellent TV movie Snowbeast, from 1977, featured a man-eating, Bigfoot-like creature …

Classic Cameos: The Muppet Movie

21 September 2009 2:33 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I think our original idea behind the Classic Cameos series was to pick one memorable cameo from a movie. However, The Muppet Movie is a long string of cameos, and why should I have to highlight only one? So many people pop up throughout the 1979 film -- my favorites are James Coburn, who owns the El Sleezo nightclub; Carol Kane's very silly "Myth? Yeth?" running gag; Mel Brooks in what's really more of an actual role than a cameo, as the mad scientist; and Orson Welles at the end of the film.

If that sounds like enough cameos, I've barely started. The Muppet Movie also has appearances from Dom DeLuise, Madeline Kahn and Telly Savalas, Paul Williams, Cloris Leachman, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Edgar Bergen (and Charlie McCarthy), Elliot Gould and Big Bird. Director James Frawley supposedly appears onscreen briefly, but I'm not sure I'd recognize him. I've included …

Karl Malden Passes Away at the Age of 97

1 July 2009 5:34 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

It has been a rough two weeks for the entertainment business when it comes to the passing of major celebrity names as Karl Malden has passed away at the age of 97. Malden died in his sleep about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, his manager Bud Ross tells CNN. Malden won an Oscar for his performance alongside Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire and was also nominated for another one of his performances opposite Brando in On the Waterfront in 1955. Only five years ago at the 2004 Screen Actors Guild Awards he was recognized with a Life Achievement Award and has long been recognized as a Hollywood icon. My personal experience with his movies has been relatively limited considering the overal breadth of his career but I have seen him in films such as A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront, Baby Doll, How the West Was Won, The Cincinnati Kid, Patton

Blofeld named best Bond baddie ever

25 June 2009 3:47 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

A hero’s nothing without an evil villain to defeat and over the years Bond, James Bond has taken down quite a few notable nasties. Not surprising really considering Her Majesty’s finest has been busy defending Queen and country in films since 1962 and shows no sign of letting up any time soon. But which is the best baddie 007’s ever faced? That was what DVD rental service LOVEFiLM wanted to know and so posed that very question to over 1,000 of its members and the answer came in the bald, cat-loving form of Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

The wicked genius and head of criminal organisation Spectre, has been played by four actors during Blofeld’s reign of terror in the Bond franchise, most famously Donald Pleasence in You Only Live Twice (1967) and Telly Savalas in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). And with such a strong screen presence, Blofeld scored almost …

Capricorn One - great sci-fi moments number six

20 June 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | Scifi Love | See recent Scifi Love news »

Capricorn One is a film that I don't own on DVD, but if I happen across it on TV I find it impossible not to watch.

Thrilling conspiracy theory nuts everywhere, its premise has a team of astronauts forced to take part in a fake Mission to Mars by threats against their families (one of the astronauts was Oj Simpson, so he would have taken some real convincing), as Nasa budget cuts mean their ship's life support would not keep them alive.

They film pretend broadcasts from a set on an isolated military base, but when the spaceship burns up on the way back home just as they were on their way to meet it, they realise they have to fight for their lives and try to reach civilisation, at the same time as journalist Elliot Gould tries to expose the truth.

Truly a child of its time, with America …

5 Awesome Underrated Heist Films

18 June 2009 10:37 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

With the release of Tony Scott.s Taking of Pelham 123, and the upcoming Michael Mann film Public Enemies, a lot of people are probably in the mood to check out more heist films (especially considering Scott.s isn.t very satisfying). By now everyone is familiar the big ones like Oceans 11, Heat, Dog Day Afternoon, etc., so here are some lesser-known but equally great films to satisfy your heist jones:The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 (Original 1974 version)Obviously the remake is going to raise everyone.s awareness of the original, so it might not be as underrated from now on, but it.s so good that it deserves all the promotion it can get. The plot is basically just like the remake; a grumpy pencil-pushing transit cop (Walter Matthau) is begrudgingly dragged into diffusing a hostage situation when a group of criminals led by mercenary Bernard Ryder/Mr. Blue

Michael Sheen as Blofeld for Bond 23...?

17 June 2009 12:10 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

We recently reported that Peter Morgan, who penned The Queen and Frost/Nixon, will be co-scripting the new James Bond movie with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, and that Afghanistan might factor into the plot-line somehow.

Now comes word from The Guardian that Michael Sheen, who has collaborated in the past with Morgan on the aforementioned movies, is in negotiations to play Ernst Stavro Blofeld in Bond 23.

Blofeld back for Bond 23...? That's what the UK paper is reporting.

"Michael is hot property right now and it is felt that he's the right man to bring Blofeld back to life," an unnamed source revealed. "Michael was a Bond fan in his youth, so this would be a dream role for him."

Blofeld is the head of Spectre and has appeared in six previous James Bond installments: From Russia with Love (1963), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Will Blofeld Be Returning In Bond 23?

Definitely chalk this one up as rumour for now, in fact forget the chalk, use high-vis paint instead. The latest story doing the rounds on the net is the triumphant return of cat-stroking master criminal Ernst Stavro Blofeld to the world of James Bond.

According to The Guardian online (who in turn are quoting the Daily Express), British actor Michael Sheen is currently in talks to play the super villain in Bond 23, presumably with an adjusted role as the shadowy leader of terrorist organisation, Quantum.

“Michael is hot property right now and it is felt that he’s the right man to bring Blofeld back to life,” an unnamed source told the Daily Express newspaper. “Michael was a Bond fan in his youth, so this would be a dream role for him.”

In the original novels and earlier movies, Blofeld was the mastermind behind international crime syndicate Spectre and has …

Michael Sheen may revise role of Bond bad guy

17 June 2009 3:18 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

James Bond’s arch enemy, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, may be resurrected, yet again, says the Guardian UK. Michael Sheen, of Frost/Nixon, The Queen, and most recently having finished filming the role of Aro in New Moon, is said to be negotiating the nemesis of the debonair, everlasting Bond 007. The character best known for his trademark companion white cat, Blofeld has been portrayed over the years by several actors including: Donald Pleasance (“You Only Live Twice”) Telly Savalas (“On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”) Charles Gray (“Diamonds Are Forever”) Max von Sydow (“Never Say Never Again”) Mike Myers has taken the character of Blofeld to a whole new level with “Dr. Evil” of the Austin Powers series with a scarred face and bald head. Sheen is said to be a fan of the Bond series, and his working relationship with writer Peter Morgan is a definite notch on his side. …

'Bond 23' Villain May Be Found in Michael Sheen

16 June 2009 7:56 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Only days after reports of scribe Peter Morgan being picked up as "Bond 23" writer, words are coming out that the next Bond movie may tap Michael Sheen as its villain. According to The Daily Express, the 40-year-old actor is in talks to join the project with the likelihood of portraying Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

Of the matter, the British newspaper quoted an unnamed source as saying, "Michael is hot property right now and it is felt that he's the right man to bring Blofeld back to life. Michael was a Bond fan in his youth, so this would be a dream role for him." If the words were true, this would be another of Sheen's collaboration with Morgan as the two had worked together in "Frost/Nixon", "The Queen" and "The Damned United".

Michael Sheen Being Tapped as Blair or Blofeld for Bond

16 June 2009 2:19 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

So it might not be true that Michael Sheen is being looked at for a record 198th role as Tony Blair for the forthcoming Bond 23: The Iota of Comfort, but it would be awesome. Plus, it might not necessarily be true that Sheen is being looked at for the villain Blofeld either. How's that for a mindbender? But according to MTV Movies Blog, an anonymous source is claiming that the actor might be joining the production, although they do recognize the probability that it may be a rumor rising from the involvement of co-writer Peter Morgan (whom Sheen worked with on The Queen and Frost/Nixon). Unfortunately, the site isn't admitting that the only reason they're covering the story is because Sheen is involved with New Moon. The bigger news is probably that - they are bringing Blofeld back for the next Bond? It's also possible that this is a rumor since the production is …

Michael Sheen ‘In Talks’ For ‘Bond’ Villain Blofeld

16 June 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

British actor Michael Sheen, who will be seen by millions this fall in “New Moon,” is reportedly in talks to join the James Bond franchise for yet another iconic role. According to an anonymous source, Sheen is up for the villainous part of Blofeld in the 23rd installment of the 007 series, which is currently being co-scripted by two-time Oscar-nominated writer Peter Morgan.

Morgan and Sheen have collaborated many times before, most memorably for “Frost/Nixon” and “The Queen,” in which he portrayed former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. It’s possible that this link between writer and actor has led to speculative rumors of Sheen’s interest and involvement in the Bond film, but we’re hoping that it’s true. Apparently Sheen has been a fan of the 007 series since his youth, so he is likely crossing his fingers, as well.

Though Sheen is a well-respected actor, he is no stranger to mainstream franchises. …

Rumor Alert: Is Michael Sheen Going to Star as Bond Big Bad Ernst Stavro Blofeld?

16 June 2009 11:06 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

We all have heard of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the evil genius and James Bond's ultimate nemesis. Heck, even Mike Myers imitated him as Dr. Evil in the "Austin Powers" films.

Blofeld is the head of the global criminal organization Spectre with dreams of, you guessed it, World Domination!

With the last Bond film, "Quantum of Solace" dealing with Spectre, it's just a logical next step to reboot the Blofeld character previously played by the likes of Max Von Sydow, Telly Savalas, John Hollis, Charles Gray, Anthony Dawson, and Donald Pleasance (pictured n character above).

Now, I'm hearing through the grapevine that Michael Sheen may be playing the Blofeld character in the upcoming Bond film with Daniel Craig reprising his role as the British super spy! This makes sense with Peter Morgan attached to co-write the script. Morgan has previously worked with Sheen in "The Queen" and "Frost/Nixon."
