DVD Review - Bereavement (2010)

Bereavement, 2010.

Written and Directed by Steven Mena.

Starring Alexandra Daddario, Spencer List, Brett Rickaby, Michael Biehn, Nolan Gerard Funk, Kathryn Meisle, Peyton List, John Savage and Valentina de Angelis.

Synopsis:

A deranged psychopath kidnaps a young boy with a genetic disorder that causes him to feel no physical pain and forces him to become an unwilling participant in the mindless slaughter of his innocent victims.

Small towns tormented by serial killers is a reliable staple of the horror genre. Be it isolated rural town locales or sleepy suburbia, the Michael Myers et al of this world go about their slashing business in the quiet recesses of America. Bereavement follows a stereotypical format with a few interesting ideas added.

A young boy, Martin, has a rare genetic disorder that causes him to feel no physical pain. He’s kidnapped by psychologically disturbed killer Graham Sutter, who forces him to bare witness to his killings. »

DVD Review: Bereavement

30 September 2012 1:29 PM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Bereavement

Stars: Alexandra Daddario, Spencer List, Brett Rickaby, Michael Biehn, Kathryn Meisle, John Savage, Chase Pechacek | Written and Directed by Stevan Mena

What makes somebody evil? Is it just in their nature to be that person, to have the ability to harm others without remorse or is it their environment that builds the monster inside.  This is the well-known argument of nature vs. nurture and Bereavement is a film that pushes for the belief that its nurture that creates the monster, that the parent is to blame.

Bereavement is actually the prequel to a movie called Malevolence, looking at the tale of Martin Bristol.  In Bereavement we see him as a six year old boy with a rare disease; he lacks the ability to feel pain.  When he is kidnapped by a serial killer he is taught that torturing and killing is ok because pain is not felt, which of course he understands. »
