Alita: Battle Angel, Untitled Marvel Film And Shane Black’s Predator Reboot All In Line For IMAX Releases

27 September 2016 9:08 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

A new multi-picture agreement has been reached by 20th Century Fox and IMAX Corporation that will ensure Alita: Battle Angel, The Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Shane Black’s Predator reboot and an as-yet-untitled Marvel movie from Fox will all be released via the large-screen format over the coming years.

Extending their long-term partnership on the heels of Deadpool‘s massive success, Coming Soon notes that each release is set to be digitally remastered to suit the IMAX format upon entering the post-production process. It’ll be some time before that happens, of course, given all of the above are simmering on the fringes of development.

Following a long layoff due to injury,  Dylan O’Brien will return to spearhead filming on The Maze Runner: The Death Cure come February, while Robert Rodriguez’s long-in-development Alita: Battle Angel will finally be summoned before the cameras next month. The jury’s still out on The Predator, »

Herschell Gordon Lewis: low-brow schlock horror director with a kind of horrible genius

26 September 2016 11:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Lewis was the master of bargain-basement splatter without whom we would not have the likes of Robert Rodriguez or Quentin Tarantino

One of the most extraordinary figures in the history of popular American moviegoing has departed the stage: film director Herschell Gordon Lewis was the “godfather of gore” and the “sultan of splatter” who in the 1960s energetically pushed the envelope of bad taste with low-cost, low-brow schlock-horror exploitation pictures. Lots of blood, lots of screaming, lots of nudity – and lots of money.

It’s hard to think of a better host for a televised night of horror films from young and upcoming filmmakers than John Carpenter. His filmography—including classics like 1978’s Halloween and 1982’s The Thing—reads like the syllabus for a film school Suspense 101 class. So, choosing him as face for the premiere episode of El Rey’s The People’s Network Showcase: Horror Edition, as Deadline is reporting, must have been an easy decision.

“When I started El Rey I wanted the network to provide a new pipeline for creators. My roots are in independent filmmaking and I believe in providing opportunities to people working outside of the studio system,” network founder Robert Rodriguez said in a statement. “We’ve discovered these terrific short films by very talented makers and with this on-air special hosted by my friend John Carpenter, we can help get them noticed ...

After enduring Ryan Reynolds’ goofy insults as the villainous Ajax/Francis in Deadpool, Ed Skrein is moving on to another bad guy role in a comic book adaptation—well, technically it’s a manga adaptation, but it’s the same sort of thing. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Skrein has signed on to play the evil cyborg Zapan in Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, which is based on the Battle Angel Alita manga series. He’ll be appearing alongside Jackie Earle Haley and Christoph Waltz, with Maze Runner’s Rose Salazar playing Alita, a female cyborg with no memory of her past who becomes a bounty hunter.

For years, James Cameron tried to get a Battle Angel Alita movie off the ground, but since he’s busy with all of those Avatar sequels these days, he’s been relegated to a lowly producer position. Rodriguez’s Alita movie ...
