Newswire: Jay Z is partnering with the Weinsteins for movie and TV projects

29 September 2016 11:57 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

In what can only be described as a meeting of titans, Jay Z just signed a two-year overall TV and film deal with The Weinstein Company. According to The Wrap, that gives the company first-look options with the rapper for both scripted and unscripted film and TV projects. And Jay Z is no stranger to that world. He’s previously served as a producer on quite a few films, including the Jamie Foxx remake of Annie, Chris Rock’s Top Five, and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.

Jay Z and the Weinsteins reportedly already have some projects lined up, although nothing has officially been announced yet. However, Jay Z released a statement explaining he’s “already passionate” about what’s in the pipeline and “looking forward” to more projects as well. He also rather poetically added that he’s “excited to tell stories from real life prophets, whom through »

Poll: Who Should Host the Oscars?

27 September 2016 1:03 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s that time of year again: awards season is in full swing, and with that, the 2017 Oscars should soon start to take shape.

Though the Academy has yet to even announce producers yet, falling behind the usual timeline, speculation has already begun about who will host the year’s biggest night in movies. After doing, by most reviews, a bang-up job hosting the recent Emmys, Jimmy Kimmel seems like an obvious choice.

But there are other options, too. Might the Academy bring back tried-and-true bets like Ellen DeGeneres or Chris Rock? Or could former Golden Globes mainstays Amy Poehler and Tina Fey take to the Oscars stage? There’s also a possibly that the Academy could bring in new hosts, like Kevin Hart or Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.

Weigh in below. We couldn’t fit all the potential candidates in our poll, so if there’s someone you »

Oscars So Slow: ABC Plays Waiting Game as Academy Mulls Producer Options

22 September 2016 2:43 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Jimmy Kimmel, by many accounts, did a bang-up job as host of the Emmys Sunday — bang-up enough to spark speculation that he could host the Academy Awards in February. At the Governor’s Ball immediately following the Emmys and in the days after, ABC executives expressed optimism that Kimmel’s performance would find favor with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has final say on Oscars production decisions. The timing is perfect. The network that the late-night host has called home since 2003 just renewed its contract to broadcast the Oscars through 2028. ABC has claimed, without offering specifics, that the agreement gives it greater creative input in the film-awards telecast. And the deal provides the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences a welcome long-term financial commitment, for which it is no doubt grateful. So with so many factors in his favor, why hasn’t Kimmel been named Oscars host already?

Gravitas Ventures has bought rights to the stand-up comedy documentary “Dying Laughing,” which includes Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer, Jamie Foxx and the late Garry Shandling.

Gravitas made the deal with filmmakers Paul Toogood and Lloyd Stanton with plans to release the movie in theaters and on demand in the first quarter of next year.

Billy Connolly, Steve Coogan, Cedric The Entertainer, Mike Epps, Eddie Izzard, Jerry Lewis, Chris Rock, Sarah Silverman and  Keenen Ivory Wayans are also featured in “Dying Laughing,” which premiered at this year’s Los Angeles Film Festival.

“Over two years, as the film began to emerge from the thousands of miles traveled and hundreds of hours or interviews, we learned about the physical and emotional dedication that it takes to become a stand-up comedian, and that the prospect of failure haunts even the most experienced and celebrated practitioners,” said Toogood and Stanton. “We hope »

Leslie Jones wielded her best weapon at the Emmys

19 September 2016 3:25 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Tatiana Maslany and Rami Malek had pretty great experiences at the Emmy Awards last night, as did the kids from Netflix's Stranger Things, but it was Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones who might have won the night by joking about her hack and just having the time of her life. Dressed in Christian Siriano once again (Remember the Ghostbusters red carpet debacle?), Jones wasn't nominated but did have a part to play in the show. Emmys y'all!! pic.twitter.com/xUeH2wjnKd — Leslie Jones (@Lesdoggg) September 19, 2016 The usual Ernst & Young appearance was upgraded this year with Jones who, as it turns out, was the perfect comedic compliment to a group talking about security thanks to her recent deplorable hacking incident. 'Game of Thrones' & 'Veep' repeated, yet this was a surprising Emmy night

Sipowicz and Simone, together again! Franz and Smits, together again! Sipowicz and Simone, together again! Dennis Franz, coming out of retirement, maybe?!?!?! Dennis Franz saying "Ipsa this!" 23 years after TV viewers first met Andy Sipowicz?!?!!? What, you want me to talk about the actual Emmy results, rather than the unexpected and wonderful reunion of my beloved NYPD Blue  that occurred right before the end of the telecast? Okay, fine. Though Frranz and Smits' appearance to present the final award — Outstanding Drama Series, to Emmy steamroller Game of Thrones, which tied its own record from last year for the most Emmys for a series in a single year with 12 (many of them presented last week at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies) — provided one last surprising and delightful moment in an Emmy telecast largely full of them.
