Tyler Perry Returns in Boo 2! a Madea Halloween This October

26 May 2017 11:43 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Before the holiday weekend gets under way, Lionsgate set new release dates for a pair of its upcoming projects. First up, the studio has handed out an October 20, 2017 release date for Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, a follow-up to last year's Boo! A Madea Halloween, from star/writer/director Tyler Perry. The studio also slated the new Aardman Animation stop-motion film Early Man for release on February 16, 2018. Unfortunately for both of those projects, they land on very competitive weekends.

Over the last few years, the third weekend in October has become increasingly crowded, but last year, Boo! A Madea Halloween managed to come out on top with a box office win of $28.5 million, easily beating three more newcomers, 20th Century Fox's Keeping Up With the Joneses, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and Ouija: Origins of Evil. However, it only earned $73.2 million domestically and just $1.6 million internationally for a worldwide total of $74.8 million, »

Lionsgate Sets ‘Tyler Perry’s Boo 2: A Madea Halloween’ for October

26 May 2017 10:13 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Lionsgate is launching the comedy sequel “Tyler Perry’s Boo 2: A Madea Halloween” on Oct. 20.

Perry brought his signature Madea character back to life last year in his ninth “Madea” movie — “Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween.” Perry credited the story’s origin to Chris Rock’s inclusion of a fictitious Madea Halloween movie in his 2014 film “Top Five.”

“This really was Chris Rock’s idea from ‘Top Five,’” he said last year at the premiere. “I gave permission, then went to Lionsgate and said, ‘I can do this.’”

The Twitter reveal comes one day ahead of an official announcement on Thursday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

"Earlier this week, I got a tweet from the people at Netflix and I have good news and bad news," DeGeneres tells the crowd. "The bad news is they wouldn’t tell me what happened to Barb on Stranger Things, but the good news is they asked if I was interested in doing a stand-up special. I said »

‘Saturday Night Live’: As Vanessa Bayer and Sasheer Zamata Exit, We Remember Their Best Sketches

22 May 2017 3:07 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Saturday Night Live” went out on a high note this weekend with The Rock as host, but the season finale also marked the departure of three cast members. While Bobby Moynihan had already announced he was leaving (and thus we had time for a tribute), there was less notice to offer farewells for fellow exiting cast members Vanessa Bayer and Sasheer Zamata.

Bayer sneakily announced her news on Instagram just hours before the finale began. Thus it felt symbolic when Moynihan and Bayer took part in a graduation sketch – allowing fans to subtly say goodbye to them during the episode. Moynihan also got to wear the Drunk Uncle attire again on Weekend Update, and Bayer went out on a high note with the Rko movie set skit and the parody for Cartier’s fidget spinner.

Film Review: ‘Folk Hero & Funny Guy’

10 May 2017 2:56 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Whether the film’s protagonists are on stage singing a song or telling a joke, the male ego commands the spotlight in “Folk Hero & Funny Guy,” in which two childhood friends — one a successful folk rocker, the other an aspiring standup comic — hit the road together for an impromptu tour. While women are wooed and hijinks experienced along the route of this dive-bar odyssey, writer-director Jeff Grace’s easygoing indie delivers a somewhat more melancholy performance than its droll exterior initially suggests. A bromance with a bitter streak born of personal delusions, fears and failings, it’s got enough personality and pathos to make it a mildly appealing option amid the usual cacophonous summer fare.

After his latest comedy-club misfire, gawky Paul (Alex Karpovsky) meets up with longtime buddy Jason (Wyatt Russell), a heavily bearded folk-music star whose hippie vibe proves irresistible to women. As if on a whim, Jason »

Film Review: ‘Snatched’

9 May 2017 10:01 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Amy Schumer is one of those rare comic artists, like Louis C.K. or Chris Rock, who can get you laughing out loud at reality. Two years ago, she carried that scorched-earth impulse right into her first movie, the fearlessly funny and close-to-the-bone “Trainwreck.” Written by Schumer herself, and directed by Judd Apatow, it was the most audacious romantic comedy in years — and the most satisfying, too — because it touched a nerve of almost masochistic sincerity. In “Snatched,” her first movie since “Trainwreck,” Schumer gets cast as a loser who’s even further down on the totem pole of respectability. It’s a sign of Schumer’s rapport with the audience that in the opening scene, where she appears to be playing the most annoying off-the-rack clothing-store customer in history (it turns out she’s actually the sales person), the deeper the hole she digs for herself, the more we like her. »
