Roland Emmerich's 'Stonewall' is arriving just in time for awards season

25 March 2015 11:14 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Roland Emmerich is entering the awards season fray once more.  The filmmaker behind such blockbusters as "The Day After Tomorrow" and "Independence Day" attempted to make a smaller, more serious film with 2011's "Anonymous."  That Shakespearean era tale was touted as a possible awards player before it debuted at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival to mostly negative reviews.  Any hopes for prestige recognition were quickly dashed. Now, after segueing into more familiar territory with "White House Down," Emmerich is returning with a slightly more personal tale, "Stonewall." Roadside Attractions announced today it had acquired the period drama for a release later this Fall (which pretty much means at least a Toronto debut).  "Stonewall" is a fictional drama set around the real events that took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York City during 1969.  The Stonewall Riots found the gay community fighting back in a series of violent protests after »

American Ultra stars Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg will be reunited later this year in another project: Woody Allen's next as yet untitled feature. Bruce Willis is the third cast member whose name has been publicly announced. The source for this information is an "exclusive" report via Deadline.com's Mike Fleming Jr. So far, as Fleming explains in his brief piece, Woody Allen and "his people" haven't confirmed the casting. In other words, things could change in the not-too-distant future. See also: Kristen Stewart Joins Kelly Reichardt Movie Project, also featuring Laura Dern and Michelle Williams. Vikings season 3 episode 1 review: Mercenary

19 February 2015 9:20 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

With a bigger budget, The History Channel's Vikings improves upon the strengths of its first two seasons in this season 3 premiere...

This review contains spoilers.

3.1 Mercenary

Two years ago, when I first tuned in to watch Vikings, I honestly wasn’t expecting much, despite my interest in the period and culture it depicts. After all, the show was ostensibly historical material being produced for The History Channel, a cable outlet that hasn’t done much lately in the way of history. I mean, Swamp People and Pawn Stars may bring in the ratings and thus the advertisers, but I doubt they’ll end up in many chronicles of our times.

What I did not know when I sat down to watch the premiere episode was the show’s pedigree. It was created by Michael Hirst who also gave us The Tudors. As someone well-versed in the Renaissance, I had »

The Mortal Instruments: what we want from the TV show

17 February 2015 10:02 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The Mortal Instruments' film’s sequel might’ve been cancelled, but could a TV show deliver everything we want?

When Screen Gems and Constantin Film began production of The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, they must have thought they were onto a winner. In 2010, the end of the Twilight Saga was in sight, and there looked to be an opportunity for a new Ya fantasy series to swoop in and nab its audience. The Mortal Instruments should’ve been the perfect successor, with its mixture of magic and romance, its sprawling fantastical world and vulnerable-yet-kickass heroine.

But when the first movie was released in 2013, it received negative reviews and a mediocre box office return. The sequel, City Of Ashes, had already been greenlit… but in the wake of the first film’s disappointing reception, it was first postponed and then cancelled altogether.

Filming Begins On ‘Damascus Cover’ With Jonathan Rhys Meyers & Sir John Hurt

4 February 2015 2:30 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Even though they’ve got the tagline ‘Trust No One’ *coughs* X-Files *coughs*, the espionage thriller Damascus Cover has started production this week in Morocco and it stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers plus Olivia Thirlby, recently knighted Sir John Hurt, Igal Naor, Jurgen Prochnow and Navid Negahban.

Damascus Cover is based on best-selling 1977 novel by Howard Kaplan, with direction by Daniel Berk (Public Enemies), with a screenplay by Samantha Newton and Berk. It’s also been perfectly setup for Berlinale 2015, where they’ll be launching their sales pitch and spy thrillers are definitely still in-fashion at the moment. Producer, Hannah Leader had this to say:

Damascus Cover is a great script – believable and brilliant. The characters and situations are vividly drawn and the Middle East setting really brings to life this spellbinding moment in history, which is both topical and timely. With Daniel at the helm, it’s going to be a beautiful picture. »
