[DVD Review] A Day in the Life

9 July 2009 11:03 PM, PDT | From JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news

I’m not a fan of rap. I’ll start there. I appreciate some of the beats and the coordination between the music and the words. I appreciate the craft and the poetic touches it takes to achieve rhymes in places that most people could never squeeze one in. I appreciate the attitude and the energy. But that said, I’m not a fan of rap. Here is of list of things that I don’t appreciate: the money grabbing, the arrogance, the women (those poor women), the cheesy lyrics, the constant cursing, the shameless materialism. I’m sure there are plenty of rappers who aren’t all about the cheap tricks and quick bucks, but many are.

For a non-fan, rap music videos are a blessing for two reasons. One is that they end in about three minutes. So even if you’re looking to see your favorite Three

Big Fan Trailer Starring Patton Oswalt

7 July 2009 9:52 AM, PDT | From FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news

After writing the script for Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, Robert Siegel makes his directorial debut with Big Fan, a dark character study about an obsessed football fan who gets beaten up by his favourite player. This is a movie I've been really looking forward to, and I was completely bummed that we weren't able to catch it at Sundance earlier this year. Fortunately, it was picked up for distribution by First Independent Pictures, and they will be releasing it in select theatres next month. The first trailer has arrived online this week and I think it looks pretty intriguing. The movie stars Patton Oswalt in the lead role, and he has been getting a lot of praise for his performance. Obviously with Oswalt there is an expectation for it to be a comedy, but as the trailer indicates there is very little humour here at all. The supporting cast

Patton Oswalt is a Sad, Pathetic Little Man in Big Fan Trailer

7 July 2009 9:29 AM, PDT | From Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news

“Big Fan” is like “The Wrestler”, only it’s about football and Patton Oswalt isn’t Mickey Rourke. Other than that, they should probably have called this movie “The Wrestler 2: The Football Fan Guy”, because it has the exact same tone and vibe as that other film, which writer/director Robert D. Siegel also wrote. With “Big Fan”, Siegel is making his directorial debut, and oh boy is it a doozy. This movie will either depress the hell out of you or make you glad you kinda like football, but not that much. But hey, there is a bright side to all this: if it had been Plaxico Burrows, Oswalt’s character might have gotten shot instead of just beaten up. Paul Aufiero, a hardcore New York Giants football fan, struggles to deal with the consequences when he is beaten up by his favorite player. Starring Patton Oswalt, Kevin Corrigan,

Siegel, former editor and chief of The Onion and screenwriter of The Wrestler, Big Fan centers on a hardcore New York Giants football fan (Oswalt) who struggles to deal with the consequences when he is beaten up by his favorite player.

First (Belated) Look: Assassination of a High School President

6 July 2009 2:38 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

I first heard of Assassination of a High School President during the 2008 Sundance Film Festival where the movie - a political/Noir mystery set in a high school - managed to make something of an impression. Fans of the film were calling it the next Brick (and if you don’t know what Brick is, you should), only two-times as funny. And that was endorsement enough for me.

Well, after Sundance, I waited for the seemingly inevitable theatrical release of Assassination of a High School President to happen, but nothing ever came of it and the film slowly faded from my overcrowded memory until recently, when a trailer for the film and news of its release finally arrived.

Now apparently, Yari Film Group, which owns Assassination, was forced into bankruptcy before they could get the movie into theaters. The resulting legalities involved with bankruptcy court have kept the movie on

Help Save ‘Assassination of a High School President’

30 June 2009 1:30 PM, PDT | From The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news

Screened at last year’s Sundance Film Festival,  Assassination of a High School President, by relative unknown Brett Simon, is already making quite a few waves, and could become a memory before you ever even see a theatrical release.

The film is about high school newspaper reporter Bobby Funke (Rocket Science’s Reece Thompson), who uncovers a series of conspiracy plots going on in his private school. The film also brings in the likes of Bruce Willis, Mischa Barton, and Michael Rapaport in the supporting cast for what most are calling “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in high school”.

With the film’s positive reviews, that may not be enough to get a theatrical release. The film’s distributor, Yari Film Group, was recently forced into bankruptcy, which has put Assassination, as well as a few other titles, up on the shelf. This means that the audience may never see Simon’s high school noir.

World’s Greatest Dad comes from writer/director Bob Goldthwait and stars Robin Williams as a single dad and high school teacher who finds his son dead after an apparent autoerotic accident. Prison Break Series Finale: Review & Discussion

16 May 2009 12:44 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

[Spoilers!!!]

The 4th season series finale of Prison Break ended it’s dying ratings existence in its Friday night slot.

This final season trudged along while everybody was chasing Scylla.  The General wanted it, Christina Scofield wanted it.  China wanted it.  India wanted.  Hell, who didn’t want it?  I wanted it so I can find some dirt to write about.

I tried to break this down in a chronological order, but my new novel adaptation of Fox’s Prison Break was getting way too long.  The closing story became too convoluted with twists, turns and the reappearance of old characters that I felt that maybe I just needed to draw on my emotions about the finale and not try to detail out the episode.  We all say it. Right?

There are some Spoilers included in one way or another, so you have been warned.

The brothers Michael (Wentworth Miller) and

Kevin Corrigan and Michael Rappaport co-star in this film. It is due to be released in late August or early September.

First Independent Pictures a 'Big Fan' of Robert Siegel's Debut

28 April 2009 | From ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news

- An accurate, sometimes unnerving portrait of fanaticism, I think many of the Sundance critic confreres that I discussed screenwriter Robert Siegel's directorial debut with, were as equally pleasantly surprised by the quality of the picture. What was often referenced was the film's tone - there is a point in Big Fan where one feels that it will go into Taxi Driver-esque territory. It was a picture I was strongly considered adding to my best of Sundance leftovers (films that did not get picked up) and if I were to write the same piece today, I'd have reason not to include it. Note: Siegel is the writer behind The Wrestler. Today, an independent label that I'm hoping can stay in the game to market the sometimes unmarketable (they just released Gigantic), First Independent Pictures announced the acquisition of Big Fan for an eventual “late summer to early fall” release as reported by Indiewire.

Discuss: The Long-Awaited Death of the Dtv Stigma

6 April 2009 8:15 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Back in the VHS days, "direct to video" actually meant something. It meant something Bad, more often than not. The video marketplace allowed a lot of people to make and sell their own flicks, but uh, they were generally pretty terrible. So when someone says "Ugh, I don't wanna rent that. It went direct to video," they're probably dredging up memories of backyard horror flicks or Oliver Gruner action films. But in today's ultra-modern, mega-bandwidth, multi-distributive movie landscape, "direct to video" can mean a whole lot of things.

Take the recent French horror film Inside, which played at festivals all over the world, opened theatrically in several countries, and got a basic (but well-received) DVD release from The Weinstein Company here in the States. So as far as the U.S. is concerned, this is considered a "direct to video" title. Yet it's an awesome film. How can that be?

3 Movie Clips from Big Fan - Robert Siegel’s Directorial Debut -- Starring Patton Oswalt, Kevin Corrigan, Michael Rapaport, Marcia Jean Kurtz, Gino Cafarelli, and Matt Servitto

15 February 2009 | From Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news

Another of the many movies that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was writer/director Robert Siegel’s debut film “Big Fan”. Like “The Wrestler”, which he wrote but didn’t direct, this film deals with the sports world and it feels just as real and authentic. Here’s the synopsis: Patton Oswalt plays a 35-year-old parking-garage attendant from Staten Island, and is the self-described "world's biggest New York Giants fan". He lives at home with his mother, spending his off hours calling in to local sports-radio station 760 The Zone, where he rants in support of his beloved team, often against his mysterious on-air rival, Eagles fan Philadelphia Phil. His family berates him for doing nothing with his life, but they don't understand the depth of his love of the Giants or the responsibility his fandom carries. One night, Paul and ...
