Warren Beatty’s ‘Rules Don’t Apply’ Will Open AFI Fest 2016

48 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Los Angeles’ own AFI Fest has been growing in stature under the leadership of director Jacqueline Lyanga over the past few years. It’s also become the go-to destination for late-breaking movies eager to gain attention right before the year-end awards season. Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper” and Ava DuVernay’s “Selma” debuted at AFI Fest (taking place this year from November 10–17) before becoming Best Picture contenders. Last year, Paramount launched Adam McKay’s “The Big Short” into the awards stratosphere.

After taking his usual deliberate time to complete and burnish his Howard Hughes biopic “Rules Don’t Apply,” writer-producer-director-star Warren Beatty is finally unveiling his period Hollywood comedy about Howard Hughes. Produced by Arnon Milchan (whose “The Revenant,” “The Big Short,” “Birdman” and “12 Years a Slave” all won Oscars, three years in a row), “Rules Don’t Apply” starring Beatty in the title role, will launch AFI Fest on Thursday, »

The Lrm Interview: Horror Master Alexandre Aja on Thriller, The 9th Life of Louis Drax

2 hours ago | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

It’s hard to say much about director’s Alexandre Aja’s latest movie The 9th Life of Louis Drax without spoiling some of its many twists.

Based on Liz Jensen’s novel and adapted by actor Max Minghella (who appeared in Aja’s previous movie Horns), the thriller stars Aiden Longworth as the title character, a young accident-prone boy who has survived numerous near-death experiences only to fall off a cliff while picnicking with his parents (Aaron Paul and Sarah Gadon). The fall puts Louis into a coma and as his father, the prime suspect, goes on the run, Louis’ mother starts to have feelings for his doctor (Jamie Dornan), who also wonders if there’s more to what happened than what he’s being told.

Although there are some classic horror elements within Louis Drax, it’s a very different beast from the more grotesque and violent films »

Frightfest 2016: ‘The Master Cleanse’ review

The Master Cleanse review: An impressive film with hints of three of the greats – Dante, Cronenberg and Spielberg

The Master Cleanse review by Awais Irfan, Frightfest 2016.

The Master Cleanse Review

The Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki leads The Master Cleanse, a delightfully strange oddball comedy, sci-fi, drama. Galecki plays Paul, a sad young man who has been stuck ever since his bride-to-be left him. After being let go from his job he finds himself drifting aimlessly through life. All that changes though after he watches a late night infomercial advertising a retreat that guarantees to make you feel ‘you’ again. Intrigued, he applies for the very selective programme and is picked along with three others – Maggie (Anna Friel), Eric (Kyle Gallner) and Laurie (Diana Bang), for the specialist treatment.

The retreat is overseen by a wonderfully exuberant past guest played by Anjelica Huston. The treatment -a full body cleanse »

Shut In – Possibly Your Oddest Upcoming Film – Releases New Images

2 August 2016 2:26 PM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

For a movie that comes out November 11th, and stars Naomi Watts and Oliver Platt, there isn’t a lot of information about Shut In yet, but at least you now get a few images.

The film’s official synopsis describes it as a story about a widowed child psychologist (Watts) who lives an isolated existence in rural New England. Apparently caught in a deadly winter storm, she must find a way to rescue a young boy before he disappears forever… but, what that means exactly is anyone’s guess.

The exact wording is very odd, and put together with the, more or less, normal-looking images, which obviously involve something more scary than snow, it’s a little hard to guess exactly where this one is going.

Add to the guessing game that the film is directed by Farren Blackburn, who has really only done TV – Doctor Who, Daredevil, The Musketeers. »

Fantasia 2016 Interview: Bobby Miller on The Master Cleanse

1 August 2016 3:00 PM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

Of all the films that I've seen at Fantasia this year, The Master Cleanse from writer-director Bobby Miller ranks among the weirdest and most unique. I have to admit that the first 20 minutes of the film didn't draw me in, but after that, Whoa! Things get weird, cute, squishy, sad, and heartwarming, sometimes all at once. As Miller's first feature, that's an amazing feat to pull off. His previous short film, Tub, played Cannes, Sundance, and SXSW. You can watch it here.   The Master Cleanse stars Johnny Galecki and Anna Friel (in addition to Anjelica Huston and Oliver Platt) as broken people on a retreat to cleanse their bodies and become more whole in body and spirit -- with some quite unexpected results. Kiefer Sutherland Talks Returning To The Flatliners Franchise

1 August 2016 5:16 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Metro.co.uk recently interviewed actor Kiefer Sutherland about the recently announced Flatliners remake. Sutherland confirmed that the remake is in fact a sequel to the original film which starred himself, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt.

The original film revolved around a group of medical students, led by Sutherland's character, Nelson Wright, who would experiment by stopping their heartbeat to prove there is life after death.

On the idea of returning for the sequel he said:

"I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original Flatliners but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film."

Sutherland continued by saying:

New "Flatliners" Is A Sequel, Not A Remake

30 July 2016 11:02 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

We already know that at least one of the key cast members from the original 1990 hit thriller "Flatliners" is coming back for Sony Pictures' upcoming remake - Kiefer Sutherland.

Today Sutherland has confirmed a suspected theory - that the film is not a remake but rather a sequel with him playing the same character of Nelson Wright. Speaking with Metro, he explained how the movie isn't so quick to reveal itself as taking place in the same universe as the original:

"I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I'm the same character I was in the original Flatliners but that I have changed my name and I've done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film... Flatliners Remake Is a Sequel Says Kiefer Sutherland

30 July 2016 10:25 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It's true. Kiefer Sutherland has confirmed what many suspected the moment he signed on for Sony's upcoming Flatliners 'remake'. It will actually be a sequel to his original 1990 hit thriller. And he is playing the same character, though that is never specifically stated in the story itself. Instead, it is heavily implied.

Kiefer Sutherland says he will be back to play former medical student Nelson Wright a second time in what will essentially be a Flatliners reboot that turns this cult favorite into a franchise for a new audience. Speaking with Metro, he explained how the movie isn't so quick to reveal itself as taking place in the same universe as the original. But before things get really bad, original audiences will get the gist quite quickly that Nelson is back, tampering with the undead in ways he perhaps shouldn't be.
