Klooss quits Odeon Film board

7 December 2002 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

BERLIN -- Reinhard Klooss has resigned as chairman of the board at German producer and distributor Odeon Film, the company announced Friday. Klooss will be replaced by board spokesman Hans Joachim Mendig. The changes will take effect at the end of the year. Klooss, however, will stay on in his position as head of feature films at Odeon. Klooss said in a statement that he wants to devote more time to film production, but the move also is a result of Odeon's strict cost-cutting measures, implemented in response to a sickly German licensing market. Last month, the Munich-based company had to downgrade its year-end forecast by €8 million ($8 million) as a result of poorer-than-expected sales. Another factor was the spectacular failure of Odeon's most recent release, writer-director Gregor Jordon's "Buffalo Soldiers". The military satire, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Ed Harris, was Odeon's first major English-language feature production and was intended to launch the company on the world market. But the mid-budget film failed miserably in Germany, taking in just €208,000 ($208,000). satire, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Ed Harris, was Odeon's first major English-language feature production and was intended to launch the company on the world market. 24 October 2002 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

The Walt Disney Co. seems to have found its firefighter as the studio is in negotiations with Joaquin Phoenix to star in Ladder 49 for director Jay Russell. The project, which is being produced by Casey Silver Prods., is about a firefighter who awaits rescue in a burning building, during which time he reflects on his career and family. Ladder was penned by Lewis Colick and is being overseen at the studio by Disney production exec Brad Epstein. There is no production start date yet. The project reunites Phoenix with Disney, for whom he appeared in this summer's blockbuster Signs. Phoenix can be seen opposite Kim Basinger in the upcoming drama Aurora Island, which is scheduled for a 2003 release. He is repped by Endeavor and the Iris Burton Agency. »

An onlooker says, "They were all sitting outside the apartment on the street. It was strange to see celebrities sitting around and talking to the neighbors as the blaze was dealt with. Luckily it was just a small fire that was controlled in no time." »

Gibson And Phoenix Battle Over On-Set Pranks

2 August 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix launched a battle of wits on the set of new sci-fi thriller Signs - because the Gladiator star refused to fall for the Aussie's famous on-set pranks. Julia Roberts, Danny Glover and Jodie Foster have all been victims of Gibson's elaborate pranks, and Phoenix was determined to win every time. He says, "Mel is the perfect combination of a gentleman and a criminal. He's incredibly kind and generous as an actor but occasionally, when you go to your trailer door in the morning, there will be a large supply of Vaseline in your door handle." Phoenix admits one of Mel's pranks really freaked him out, but he refused to let his co-star see that he had got to him. He reveals, "We were doing this scene where I'm underneath the stairs and he comes down and he opens the door and says something to me. We go to shoot and I hear him come down the stairs and then there's silence and I'm waiting for him to come open the door, and then the entire set goes pitch black and I realize he's playing a practical joke and I refuse to lose. I didn't come out. I just sat there talking to myself. It was about 25 minutes before Mel came back and he just opened the door and said his line as if nothing had happened." Gibson admits Phoenix, who plays his brother in Signs, was "prime for pranks" and he thoroughly enjoyed listening to his co-star talking to himself under the stairs. He says, "Don't listen to him. He wasn't that calm. I got him. He was shouting out things like, 'I'll call my lawyer.'" »

Michael Caine Shocked At Height Of Hollywood Hunks

14 January 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Michael Caine is stunned by a recent development in Hollywood - all the best actors are short. The British Cider House Rules star, who stands an impressive six foot two inches, is amazed by the success of diminutive actors such as Ryan Phillippe - a mere five feet nine inches - in Hollywood. He says, "I think Ewan McGregor, Stephen Dorff, Joaquin Phoenix, Ryan Phillippe and Tobey Maguire are wonderful actors. There are many other fine actors in Hollywood. But... I've never seen a tall one. It seems to me that there's a generation of very talented small people... maybe they are more ambitious because they are more angry because they are short." »
