How James Cameron and His Team Made Terminator 2: Judgment Day’s Liquid-Metal Effect

1 July 2015 6:56 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

When director James Cameron was concocting 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, he knew that he needed its villain to evolve beyond Terminator’s formidable T-800, played — in both the original and the sequel — by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Enter the crew at George Lucas’s visual-effects studio Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm), who were ready to deploy sophisticated computer-generated imagery and create the “liquid-metal” assassin T-1000. Nearly a quarter-century later, in Terminator Genisys, which hits theaters July 1, the T-1000, played in T2 by Robert Patrick and now by Byung-hun Lee, will make its triumphant morphing return, but there’s nothing quite like the first time. Here, some of T2’s key visual-effects gurus, producers, and actors tell us how the most indelible aspect of this most memorable killer robot came to life. For 1989’s The Abyss, Cameron and Ilm made their initial breakthrough with a malleable CGI character that could take on human »

Justin Lin’s ‘Hollywood Adventures’ Take Him To China

1 July 2015 1:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Taiwan-born Justin Lin has made his first film in Asia since becoming a Hollywood sensation as director of four of the “Fast & Furious” franchise movies.

Lin is producer, alongside Chinese media tycoon Bruno Wu, on “Hollywood Adventures,” which released in China late last week and was the world’s fifth biggest movie this weekend according to Rentrak, with a $26 million opening.

In 2012 Lin and Wu formed a joint venture company, Perfect Storm Entertainment, which produced the picture alongside China’s Enlight Pictures. Enlight is also the distributor in China.

The film is an unusual hybrid and may be a model of things to come from China.

While the movie starred A-list Chinese talent including Zhao Wei and Huang Xiaoming, most of the crew, including director Timothy Kendall, and the writers, were American.

Hollywood’s Sung Kang from “Fast & Furious” plays a supporting role. Others making appearances include Robert Patrick, Simon Helberg »

5 Things You Need to Know Before You See 'Terminator: Genisys'

29 June 2015 7:30 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

(Spoiler Warning: Turn back now if you don't want to know anything about the plot of Arnold's new "Terminator" movie. I mean, more than what the trailers have already spoiled.)

One of the most famous lines uttered by Arnold Schwarzenegger's murder-powered cyborg is "I'll be back." And on July 1, the T-800 will once again be true to his word when "Terminator: Genisys" hits theaters.

The fifth "Terminator" movie aims to robo-punch you right in the nostalgia center, much like "Jurassic World" did, with its twisty, time-travel story that pays homage to the franchise's first two films (while completely, and wisely, ignoring the existence of meh entries "Rise of the Machines" and "Salvation.")

To prepare you for another trip to the land of Skynet, here are all the things you need to know about "Genisys," which picks up where James Cameron's original 1984 film left off.

1. It's a Reboot. »

Re-Viewed: Terminator 2 Judgment Day, James Cameron's ground-breaking sequel

28 June 2015 1:30 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Time is a strange thing. Scientists say a watch travelling in a jet will experience time more slowly than the same watch in a tug boat. It won't slow the watch down - it literally experiences time differently. Speed affects time, basically. Which probably explains why Terminator 2: Judgment Day is one of those very rare films that feels long, but is never boring. Time slows down for it because it moves so fast.

It's also very much a product of its time. Terminator 2 is a violent film, made in a violent period of history. According to James Cameron, the Rodney King beating didn't just take place near the biker bar they shot Arnie's opening scenes in, it happened on a night Terminator 2 was filming. There's something too eerie about that story for it not to be true. After all, what was more prescient in 1991 than the sight of an »
