The Pros and Cons of Scorpion

26 July 2014 12:00 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

CBS premiered the pilot episode of their newest procedural, Scorpion, at Comic-Con on Thursday, and it might be worth checking out. I haven’t quite decided yet. Let’s go through the pros and cons together.

The show follows the usual structure of a CBS procedural — a group of specialized people are working against the clock to solve a problem that they are uniquely qualified to solve. Many of them have tragic backstories. Okay, so on CSI there is no clock, but Without a Trace, Person of Interest, and that serial killer one all have/had some element of working quickly to save someone. Con

Scorpion’s twist on the concept — that this team is made up of  super geniuses who basically don’t have any social skills — has been done a few times before. Con

However, the show’s other conceit — that this is based on the true life of Walter O’Brien, »

CBS is bringing to life the incredible stories of real-life genius, Walter O’Brien and his team of equally gifted individuals, this fall with their new show, Scorpion.  After their first appearance as a cast at Comic-Con, where they also screened the pilot’s premiere, the cast and producers sat down for round table interviews with the press. The real O’Brien, who also serves as executive producer on the show, was on hand to discuss how the idea for a series came about and what motivated him to move on with the project.  During our conversation, the cast: Robert Patrick, Elyes Gabel, and Katherine McPhee, gave us some insight into their characters and the producers (Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci) revealed what viewers can expect to see on a weekly basis and why we should all watch.  Hit the jump for more. Machinima Prime Commits Grand Theft Auto With ‘Chop Shop’

18 July 2014 12:31 PM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Machinima Prime has hit the streets. The high-quality original programming division of the Machinima network has released Chop Shop, a crime thriller about a group of car thieves. Chop Shop was first announced more than a year ago, when it emerged as an intriguing partnership between Machinima and Paramount Insurge Pictures. Insurge, which focuses on micro-budgeted productions, signed on for the six-episode series. Bandito Brothers, the studio best known for producing the action film Act of Valor, served as Chop Shop's producer, with Machinima releasing the series on its Prime channel. It's worth noting that this deal only extends to the Us; Chop Shop is not available in other countries. Chop Shop follows its heroes as they attempt to work their way up through the criminal underworld. The series features the same dark cinematography as several other Machinima Prime series, but the first episode is noticeably talkier than the channel's typical programs. »

Film Review: ‘The Road Within’

15 July 2014 7:03 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A germaphobe, an anorexic and a guy with Tourette’s syndrome embark on a long journey in “The Road Within,” and if you’ve heard this one before, it may be because you’ve already experienced “Vincent Wants to Sea,” the 2010 German dramedy that provides an almost scene-for-scene blueprint for writer-director Gren Wells’ American remake. Similarly calculating in its bid for laughs and tears, this tale of three twentysomething misfits boasts a somewhat rougher indie edge than its more polished predecessor, a stylistic decision that suits the bristling and committed performances by Robert Sheehan, Dev Patel and Zoe Kravitz. Still, there remains a nagging tidiness to the whole endeavor that leaves a strained, cloying aftertaste, suggesting commercial performance in line with the picture’s overall modest impact.

Amy Winehouse sucks my cock!” turns out to be one of the more printable things involuntarily uttered by Vincent (Sheehan), a young man »

“True Blood” Episode 7.04: Shreveport, 90210

14 July 2014 7:10 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Okay, now That was more like it. But before we discuss what was far and away the best episode yet of this season of True Blood, can we all agree that Alcide’s death was like, kinda mean? I get that he died nobly… in service to Sookie’s guaranteed reunion with Bill. But when Terry had himself offed, time literally stopped and oodles of energy was spent honoring him. Here, they didn’t even bother taking the time to chuck our poor werewolf in the pet cemetery before moving right along.

And wait, Brief nudity? Alcide, we miss you already!!

Let’s dig in.

Jackson (Robert Patrick) – Alcide’s puppy papa – gets a call while having a trailer-park bootie-call with Sheryl Crow. Sookie (Anna Paquin) calls and tells him that Alcide is dead. He tells her, “He loved the fuck outta you.” I can’t tell if that’s a good thing or not. »

The Dusty VHS Corner: Pm Entertainment

13 July 2014 10:26 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In the latest edition of The Dusty VHS Corner, Tom Jolliffe digs out a trio of actioners from Pm Entertainment…

Between 1989 and 2002, Pm Entertainment was a strong force in the straight to video action arena. Founded by directors Joseph Merhi and Richard Pepin, they set about trying to deliver big thrills on low budgets. At some stages, largely during a peak period in the mid-90’s, they managed to do that.

Certain stars would become synonymous with the company, and they largely worked with the same ethos as other bigger companies and action specialists, in that you need to have a name attached to sell your picture. Pm worked, sometimes repeatedly, with a slew of video action stars such as Gary Daniels, Don “The Dragon” Wilson, Cynthia Rothrock, Jack Scalia and Jeff Wincott.

Pm Entertainment would also work largely out of La. Whilst other rival companies decided Canada or Eastern »
