Author: Zehra Phelan

Thor: Ragnarok actress, Tessa Thompson has been confirmed to star in Lionsgate’s Codeblack Film biopic on the Notorious Jewel Thief Doris Payne.

Thompson will both star in and co-produce the film about the still-living 87-year-old jewel thief. Payne has reportedly committed countless robberies. Payne’s career as an international jewel thief spans six decades, with a criminal record dating back to 1952. Her modus operandi is to enter jewellery stores posing as a well-to-do woman, typically looking for a diamond ring. Using her charm, she would engage the clerk, asking to see an assortment of items. Eventually, she would “cause the clerk to forget” just how many items were outside the case; and, at some point, she would leave with one or two pieces.

Tessa Thompson Interview

Payne is most noted for stealing a 10-carat diamond ring, valued at $500,000 (Us), from Monte Carlo in the 1970s. She fled to France,

Oscars flashback: Saoirse Ronan got her first nomination at just 13 years old for ‘Atonement’ [Watch]
At the ripe ol’ age of 23, Best Actress contender and “Lady Bird” star Saoirse Ronan is already on her third Oscar nomination. She was last shortlisted two years ago in the same category for “Brooklyn,” but her first nomination came 10 years ago when she was only 13 years old.

The fresh-faced teenager was up for Best Supporting Actress for her breakthrough performance in “Atonement” as Briony Tallis, Keira Knightley’s meddling younger sister who alters multiple lives with a damning accusation. Ronan, who would’ve become the third youngest acting winner behind Tatum O’Neal (“Paper Moon”), who was 10, and Anna Paquin (“The Piano”), who was 11, lost to BAFTA winner Tilda Swinton (“Michael Clayton”) during a divided year with multiple people splitting the precursors. The other nominees were Golden Globe champ Cate Blanchett (“I’m Not There), SAG champ Ruby Dee (“American Gangster”) and Critics’ Choice champ Amy Ryan (“Gone Baby Gone

TV Review: ‘Bellevue,’ Starring Anna Paquin

TV Review: ‘Bellevue,’ Starring Anna Paquin
In the town of Bellevue, Annie Ryder (Anna Paquin) is a detective with boundary issues. Specifically, she doesn’t have any: In the first scene, she smashes a stranger’s car window and makes amends by pressing herself against him until he stops shouting and starts kissing her. A few minutes later he is snorting cocaine off of her cleavage in his motel room, and she’s reaching for a bottle while he pulls off her pants. And only then — way past what seems like the point of no return — does the door slam open to make way for two police officers brandishing guns.

In some ways, it’s a clichéd scene: The romance of the undercover cop getting too close to the other side of crime is a frequent subject for film and television. “Bellevue” is less about the romance, though, than it is about Annie herself — and what it means to keep blurring the lines

Greta Gerwig (‘Lady Bird’) makes Oscars history as 5th female Best Director nominee: Will she become only the 2nd winner?
Make no mistake about it: the Academy Awards are the ultimate boys club. In the entire history of the ceremony, there had only been four women nominated for Best Director at the Oscars. But on Tuesday morning that number jumped to five when Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”) heard her name called as Best Director. (See list of 2018 Oscar nominations.) Below, our writer Kevin Jacobsen looks back at the four previous female director Oscar nominees. Might Gerwig be the second female champion after Kathryn Bigelow accepted the honor for “The Hurt Locker” eight years ago?

Gerwig earned stellar reviews for her solo directorial debut “Lady Bird,” a coming-of-age story starring Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf as a complex daughter and mother. The Critics’ Choice Awards and Directors Guild Awards nominated Gerwig as Best Director, and she even won the National Board of Review.

This was a standout year for female directors,

Airing on Wgn America, the drama series Bellevue follows Annie Ryder (Anna Paquin, in a stand-out performance), a detective looking to unravel the mysterious disappearance of a transgender teen (beautifully and heartbreakingly played by Sadie O’Neil), in a case that might connect back to the murder of a young woman, 20 years prior. But trying to solve this mystery will pull Annie further away from her daughter and force her to confront someone from her own past, all while trying to navigate the complicated relationship with her on-again/off-again ex, Eddie (Allen Leech), and her boss …

Kenneth Lonergan Reflects On Director’s Cuts & Battle To Edit ‘Margaret’

While Kenneth Lonergan has been on the interview circuit promoting his new Starz mini-series “Howard’s End,” he’s also seen renewed interest in his sophomore effort “Margaret.” The 2011 Anna Paquin starring film was notable for the protracted editing process, resulting in a years long battle between the filmmaker and the producers, who demanded his film not exceed a two and half hour running time.

2018 Oscars: Will one film sweep both actress awards for the 11th time?

2018 Oscars: Will one film sweep both actress awards for the 11th time?
If our combined Oscar odds are correct, the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories will be dominated by the stars of three films: Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf of “Lady Bird”; Margot Robbie and Allison Janney of “I, Tonya”; and Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer of “The Shape of Water.” And if one pair of co-stars wins, it’d be the 11th time both actress awards went to the same film.

The best chance of this happening is with Ronan and Metcalf. The former sits in second place in lead, behind “Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri” star Frances McDormand, with 7/2 odds, while her onscreen mother is the favorite in supporting with 11/5 odds.

But after defeating Metcalf at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice, Janney is watching her stock rise quickly. She stands at 5/2 odds, while her onscreen daughter, Robbie, is in fifth in lead with 8/1 odds.

‘Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams’ Review: Amazon’s Star-Studded Anthology Series Needs to Dream Bigger

‘Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams’ Review: Amazon’s Star-Studded Anthology Series Needs to Dream Bigger
Anthology series and the science-fiction genre should go hand-in-hand, but “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams” doesn’t make the most of its sky-high potential. Despite featuring a fitting number of stars for the space-exploring stories on hand, the 10 standalone episodes inspired by Philip K. Dick’s writings do little to evoke the prolific sci-fi author’s next-level dreams.

The best of the six entries screened in advance is, oddly enough, labeled the first episode on the screener site but falls to Episode 9 via Amazon. That’s a shame, since viewers would have to make it through the worst of the lot — Episode 7, “The Father Thing” — let alone eight more middling hourlong entries before they reach it. “The Commuter” stars Timothy Spall as an employee at a train station who discovers a hidden city between the stops.

Robert De Niro Gets an Extra Lift From Platform Shoes on Set

Robert De Niro Gets an Extra Lift From Platform Shoes on Set
Robert De Niro is walking tall. The Oscar winner was spotted out and about in the Bronx alongside fellow actor Al Pacino. Of course, it wasn't just any ordinary afternoon—the two stars were on the set of their upcoming film, The Irishman, directed by Martin Scorsese and also starring the likes of Anna Paquin, Bobby Cannavale and Joe Pesci. For his role as Frank Sheeran, the late labor union official allegedly associated with the Bufalino crime family and purported killer of Jimmy Hoffa, De Niro had to physically get into character. As evidenced by the snaps from set, that meant temporarily adjusting his height. The actor was spotted...

Robert De Niro Wears Massive Platform Shoes to Tower Over Al Pacino on Set of New Movie

Robert De Niro Wears Massive Platform Shoes to Tower Over Al Pacino on Set of New Movie
Robert De Niro will be towering over Al Pacino in their upcoming mobster film The Irishman thanks to a little movie magic.

On Wednesday, the two Oscar winners were photographed on the New York City set of the 2019 Martin Scorsese flick — with De Niro, 74, wearing lifts (to put it nicely) in his shoes to give him some height over Pacino, 77.

The move has nothing to do with vanity and everything to do with the fact that De Niro’s character, hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, stood tall at 6-ft-4-in. Before his death in 2003, the alleged Bufalino crime family member
