Chazz Palminteri Goes to Bed Hungry

By Alex Simon

Chazz Palminteri’s life is one of those classic show biz stories that, dare we say it, is the stuff from which movies are made. Born and raised in the Bronx, Palminteri toiled for years as a struggling stage, film and television actor before finally being plucked from obscurity by Robert De Niro, who saw his off-Broadway autobiographical play A Bronx Tale, a one-man show in which Palminteri played a host of colorful characters he grew up and around in his Bronx neighborhood during the 1950s and ‘60s, where his life was shaped by two mentors: his straight-laced working class father and a local mobster named Sonny.

The movie version of A Bronx Tale was a hit with audiences and critics alike upon its premiere in 1993 and Palminteri hasn’t stopped working since. His latest turn, in Debbie Goodstein’s autobiographical film Mighty Fine, »

Andie MacDowell and Rainey Qualley Prove Mighty Fine

By Alex Simon

When you see the opening moments of Debbie Goodstein’s writing/directing debut Mighty Fine and catch your first glimpse of newcomer Rainey Qualley playing Andie MacDowell’s daughter, your first thoughts will most likely be “Wow! That’s great casting.” Truth be told, 23 year-old Qualley is, in real life, MacDowell’s daughter, the second of her three children.

Mighty Fine, which MacDowell co-produced, tells Goodstein’s autobiographical story of a Jewish family from Brooklyn who relocate to New Orleans in the early 1970s, led by their charismatic, but troubled father (Chazz Palminteri) who is always one step away from millionaire status or complete destitution. The family drama, released by Adopt Films, arrives in theaters May 25.

Mighty Fine Movie Review

25 May 2012 7:18 AM, PDT | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Title: Mighty Fine Director: Debbie Goodstein Starring: Chazz Palminteri, Andie MacDowell, Rainey Qualley, Jodelle Ferland A deadly dull melodrama of familial dysfunction and emotional abuse in the face of patriarchal anger management, writer-director Debbie Goodstein’s “Mighty Fine” leans heavily on autobiographical inspiration for dramatic heft and connection, a tactic that proves ill-advised. A somewhat drab and unimaginative telling further dents this offering of already rather limited psychological insights and pat conclusions and catharses. Set in the 1970s, “Mighty Fine” centers around a so-surnamed husband and father, small businessman Joe (Chazz Palminteri), who uproots his family and moves them from Brooklyn to New Orleans. His wife Stella (Andie MacDowell) is a  [ Read More ] »

A Bronx Tale star Chazz Palminteri is set to expand his acclaimed pizza restaurant venture in Las Vegas after tasting success in Baltimore, Maryland.

The actor and two partners opened Chazz: A Bronx Original in the upscale Harbor East neighbourhood last year and it has quickly become a darling of the food critics.

So the movie star is now hoping to open a second restaurant in Sin City.

He tells BlogTalkRadio.com, "I started the restaurant Chazz with two partners in Baltimore. I felt funny naming it that but my partners wanted me to name it that so I said Ok.

"Esquire Magazine called it one of the top pizzas in the United States. We have a coal fire oven and everything is great there. It's a Bronx theme because I wanted to bring back food from the old times. We're looking at another Chazz restaurant in Las Vegas now." »

Operating both on screen and off, Oscar nominee Chazz Palminteri has carved out a career playing both to and against his perceived tough guy strengths. In his new film, writer-director Debbie Goodstein’s 1970s-set “Mighty Fine,” the 60-year-old actor plays charismatic, high-spirited family man Joe Fine, who relocates his wife Stella (Andie MacDowell) and two daughters (Jodelle Ferland and Rainey Qualley) from Brooklyn to New Orleans, in search of a better life. With his apparel business experiencing hard times, however, Joe’s depression and anger starts to manifest itself more and more in emotionally abusive outbursts. For ShockYa, Brent Simon had a chance to speak to Palminteri recently, about the movie, his  [ Read More ] »

A spokesperson for O’Loughlin announced earlier this month that the actor was seeking treatment for prescription pain medication, and would be taking leave from Hawaii Five-0 for an unspecified amount of time.

Mighty Fine: Film Review

A rather clichéd coming-of-ager, writer-director Debbie Goodstein’s “semi-autobiographical” feature directorial debut Mighty Fine has heart to spare, but little new to say. Even with a planned counter-programming strategy, it stands a slim chance of carving out much of a niche from an anticipated Memorial Day weekend limited release. Photos: The Scene at Santa Barbara International Film Festival Set in the 70s, Mighty Fine follows Joe Fine (Chazz Palminteri), a Brooklyn garment manufacturer, as he moves his family to New Orleans, closer to the factory that produces his company’s clothing line. Evan Shapiro: 15 Film Festival Darlings That Would Have Been Better as TV Series

27 January 2012 6:10 AM, PST | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

It's been quite a week. It started in Utah, for the Sundance Film Festival, where, in three days, I saw seven great films, a pop up performance by Eddie Izzard and 30 inches of snow. Then Sunday, to Miami, via Dallas, for Natpe (the annual conference and sales market for Producers and TV Execs), where I participated on a panel called The Economics of Comedy, and met TV people from all over the planet who debated the future of television over spicy margaritas. All accomplished, by the way, with only one carry-on suit case.

This wacky cultural mash-up -- Utah and Miami; Indie Film and Format Television -- created a strange brew in my mind. The juxtaposition of two ends of the show biz spectrum, along with the fascinating overlap of their populations (it's weird how many people make the same whirlwind trip), forced me to consider each medium in context of each other, »

Woody Allen Career Retrospective Part 3: From Murder to Midnight

13 January 2012 1:53 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

In 1993, whilst under heavy fire from the media regarding his split with Farrow and in the middle of a nasty custody battle over custody of their children, Woody Allen released yet another movie. “Manhattan Murder Mystery” is a light hearted romp that reunites him with Diane Keaton in a role originally intended for Farrow. Keaton and Allen play a high class married couple who accidentally stumble upon what they believe to be a murder. Co-Starring Alan Alda and Angelica Huston the movie is fun, frivolous watch which showed that the on screen chemistry between Allen and Keaton was still there after all those years. It also proved that regardless of what was happening in his personal life Woody Allen was still an accomplished and extremely focused film director. He escaped from the pressures of reality by immersing himself in even more work.

In 94 he directed “Don’t Drink the Water »
