‘Pretty Woman’: Looking Back at Julia Roberts’ Star-Making Role

24 March 2017 10:45 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

On March 21, 1990, Touchstone Pictures previewed “Pretty Woman” at the Avco Westwood near UCLA, two days before its national launch. Variety columnist Army Archerd reported that laughter drowned out much of the dialogue and young Julia Roberts “is headed for heavy stardom.” In retrospect, that seems like a pretty safe prediction, but Roberts was not well known when she was cast in the film. (She had completed her role as Sally Fields’ daughter in “Steel Magnolias,” but the film hadn’t been released yet). Roberts was only cast in “Pretty Woman” after numerous other actresses had passed on the role, including Meg Ryan, Karen Allen, Molly Ringwald, Diane Lane and Michelle Pfeiffer.

And the project began with a much darker tone; in J.F. Lawton’s original screenplay, streetwalker Vivian (Roberts) agrees to give up cocaine for her week with banker Edward (Richard Gere), but at the end he dumps her back »

Wes Anderson’s ‘Isle of Dogs’ is Inspired By Akira Kurosawa and Christmas Television Specials

13 March 2017 10:34 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Wes Anderson is finally back behind the camera and at work in London on his new film, “Isle of Dogs.” The movie, which brings the director back to the world of stop-motion animation after 2009’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” is set in Japan and follows a young boy’s odyssey in search of his missing dog. But just because the movie is stop-motion doesn’t mean Anderson is going the family-friendly route again.

During a wide-ranging discussion about his career at Arte Cinema (via The Film Stage), Anderson remains quite tight-lipped about his upcoming film, though he did reveal two surprising sources of inspiration.

The first is the Rankin-Bass Christmas television specials, which Anderson admitted to being obsessed with as a child.  “I really liked these TV Christmas specials in America,” he explained. »

9 Oscars Winners Who Don't Hold Up to the Test of Time

24 February 2017 2:05 PM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Just because a movie or a celebrity wins an Oscar, that doesn't mean the win was deserved. While the Academy Awards are seen as the capstone to awards season -- and one of the highest honors in the business -- we all know that stars and movies get snubbed or overlooked all the time.

What's worse is when we look back at what did win, and shake our heads in confusion and disbelief. So, with the 89th Academy Awards just around the corner, let's take a look back over the show's illustrious history at a few times the Academy voters clearly made a mistake.

Biggest Oscar Moments of All Time: Cuba Gooding Jr. Loves Everyone at the 1997 Academy Awards

24 February 2017 4:00 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Cuba Gooding Jr. was feeling the love at the 69th Academy Awards in 1997. And for good reason! The then 29-year-old walked away with the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in Jerry Maguire, beating Fargo's William H. Macy, Shine's Armin Mueller-Stahl, Primal Fear's Edward Norton and Ghosts of Mississippi's James Woods. From the moment presenter Mira Sorvino announced his name live from inside the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Center, it was clear Gooding would be accepting the award on his own terms. And while he may not have had the longest speech of all time, he did have the longest speech over the show's exit music. After hugging Cruise on his way to the stage, an »

Wes Anderson has scored a major win for the cause of film preservation, raising more than a quarter of a million dollars for Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation. In December, Anderson released a video that announced his latest project, the stop-motion animation film “Isle of Dogs,” and also invited people to donate money to a campaign hosted by Crowdrise, the crowdfunding company co-founded by Anderson’s friend and frequent collaborator, Edward Norton. The campaign ended last week.

Fight Club, and Fight Club 2: what happened?

Dan Cooper Mar 15, 2017

Fight Club 2 is something that exists, but it's not heading to the screen as of yet. At least not directly...

Fight Club 2. Has it happened? Will it happen? Should it happen?

See related  Prime Suspect 1973 episode 2 review Prime Suspect 1973 episode 1 review Prime Suspect prequel on its way

The collective answer to those three questions are of course yes. And no. Start trawling the web for word of a sequel to the 1999 cult classic turned post-modern masterpiece and one thing soon becomes apparent: the first rule of a Fight Club sequel is that you don’t talk about a Fight Club sequel. It will come as no great surprise to you that the second rule is somewhat similar in fashion and wording to the first.

41 trailer scenes that didn’t make the final film

Rob Leane Feb 10, 2017

Star Wars, Terminator 2, Fantastic Beasts and more: they all have scenes in the trailer, that never made the final film...

More often than you might think, scenes that appear in movie trailer don’t turn up in the finished film. This can leave trailer-loving audience members confused as the credits roll, wondering if they dropped off and missed something important.

A couple of massive movies have done this recently, and the internet has been quick to fill in the blanks with speculation. Fingers have been pointed at tinkering studio bigwigs and extensive reshoots, when the reality is often a little less dramatic: filmmakers always chop some footage in the edit, and they rarely have much involvement in the trailers. »

Great Job, Internet!: Here’s a one-stop shop for images of Nazis getting punched in the face

24 January 2017 11:59 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

While the debate rages on about whether it’s okay to punch Nazis in the face out in the real world, it turns out we really like watching them get punched in the face in our fiction—so much so, in fact, that a new Tumblr page is documenting all those Nazi beat-downs in one place. The Tumblr is called Nazis Gettin’ Punched and its simple description reads, “A satisfying repository of images, still or in-motion, actual or fictional, featuring those who espouse Nazi ideology being struck by mighty but non-lethal blows.”

Image: Captain America #1

The site only launched a few days ago, but it’s already full of Nazi punchin’ imagery. Some of these altercations take place during the 1940s, like Indiana Jones punching Nazi soldiers or Captain America punching Hitler himself. Others offer a more contemporary flare, like Edward Norton confronting his former neo-Nazi colleagues in American ...

Interview with Toshiaki Toyoda: I can not fit into societal norms and am a misfit myself.

Toshiaki Toyoda hardly needs an introduction to fans of Japanese cinema. Since his debut in 1999, with “Pornostar”, he has been acknowledged as one of the most original filmmakers in the country. With films like “Blue Spring”, “Hanging Garden” and “9 Souls” he became internationally known, as his films continue to screen in festivals all over the world.

On the occasion of the release of Toshiaki Toyoda: The Early Years by Third Window, we speak with him about his films, his career, the Japanese movie industry, the fate of the characters in “Unchain”, and many more subjects.

In “Unchain” you focus on a character that could be easily characterized as a “loser”. What was the appeal to focus on Kaji? Did he acknowledge his failures?

Unchain my heart”, are the words that Kaji lived by. Kaji is an artist that lived by those words. The appeal was that I also wish to live that way, »

Four Director’s Cuts I Want To See

Anghus Houvouras with four director’s cuts he’d like to see…

The idea of a Director’s Cut or ‘Extended Cut’ isn’t necessarily new. There was a time when letting the director back into the editing booth to take another shot at shaping their vision was unheard of. Kubrick would sometimes re-edit movies after they were already in theaters either because he was a staunch perfectionist or he accidentally switched the medication to control his obsessive compulsive disorder with tic-tacs.

A Director’s Cut was usually a chance to get a cleaner version of the film due to interference from studios, producers, or test screening audiences. There are Director’s Cuts which provide a lot of additional insight into their movies. Normally that insight being ‘Man, this was better before they went back in and made everything too damn long’. I certainly felt that working my way through »
