Sherlock Holmes has never been so prevalent. With a Sherlock Holmes film franchised led by Robert Downey Jr. and BBC's Sherlock TV series starring Benedict Cumberbatch, CBS took a small gamble when it greenlighted its one-hour drama Elementary. Centered on the private eye, flanked by a female Watson, the show is set in contemporary New York City. The changes have certainly paid off. So much so that THR's chief TV critic Tim Goodman, in his review of the pilot, declared Jonny Lee Miller "superb and compelling as Sherlock." For Miller, who previously starred in Eli Stone and Dexter, going

The widely acclaimed science fiction writer Iain Banks, whose novel Complicity was made into a film starring Jonny Lee Miller and Brian Cox, has died of cancer at the age of 59. He had been ill for several months and taking chemotherapy in an effort to prolong his life.
Banks sprang to fame in 1984 with The Wasp Factory and went on to write The Crow Road, which became a popular television series, along with numerous other novels, many of which have been considered for films. He created the Culture series, considering how a human-like species might behave in an age of plenty, and he was described by the Times as one of the top 50 writers of the century.
To those of us who had the pleasure of meeting him, he was also a warm, likeable individual, known for his sense of humour. His use of the middle initial 'M' »

Sure, some of you might think it would be great to stay a teenager and never age, but as this new clip from Neil Jordan's Byzantium (review here) reminds us, being 16 forever can really suck!
Byzantium is in UK cinemas now and heading to the Us on June 28th.
Byzantium, written by Moira Buffini and directed by Neil Jordan, stars Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan, Caleb Landry Jones, Danny Mays, Jonny Lee Miller, Tom Hollander, Bradley James, and Sam Riley in the vampire flick wherein Arterton stars as Clara, a vampire who has to protect herself and her daughter (Ronan) from those seeking to plunge a stake through their hearts.

Seasoned horror fans will no doubt recognize the irony in today's vampire cinema. The "romanticization" of the vampire has been evolving since (at least) John Badham's 1979 rendition of Dracula -- but we never saw our beloved cinematic bloodsuckers lose their teeth like they did in the feckless Twilight movies. What used to be sexy but scary became gothic romance, which led to pop-culture overkill: the vampire became neutered.
But if there's a silver lining to the smash-hit success of the otherwise terrible Twilight movies, it's that producers all over the world are now (all of a sudden!) willing to bankroll a horror film... just because it has some vampires and a dash of romance. So in a way we can thank Twilight for recent indies and imports like We Are the Night, Kiss of the Damned, and Neil Jordan's Byzantium. It's nothing if not a little ironic: the »

A British take on the vampire romp naturally features a centuries-old prostitute in a rundown seaside town – with some 80s surrealism thrown in
The English seaside town is the end of the line – and the end of the world. That has been the prevailing mood in recent British movies like Paweł Pawlikowski's Last Resort, Thomas Clay's The Great Ecstasy of Robert Carmichael, and indeed Rowan Joffé's underrated new version of Brighton Rock, which, like this film, features Sam Riley.
And it is by a typically bleak British beach that Neil Jordan has created this florid, preposterous but watchable soap opera of the undead; it's a dark fantasy that contains a trace of his slight weakness for whimsy, but in some ways it's his most effective film for some time, adapted for the screen by Moira Buffini from her stage play A Vampire Story. The seaside town is unnamed, but »

Byzantium, 2012.
Directed by Neil Jordan.
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton, Caleb Landry Jones, Sam Riley and Jonny Lee Miller.
Synopsis:
Residents of a coastal town learn - with deathly consequences - the secret shared by the two mysterious women who have sought shelter at a local resort.
Neil Jordan has a had a long career in filmmaking, and is also a novelist too, writing fiction including Night in Tunisia (1976) and, most recently, Mistaken (2011). Therefore considering Byzantium is based on a play - Moira Buffini's A Vampire Story - it is no suprise that Jordan has chosen this project, proving that his latest vampire film is not another aspiring for Twilight success, but instead a neat re-tread of similar themes to that of his 1994 film Interview with the Vampire. Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton play the timeless vampires, living in a coastal town, and at a point whereby the everlasting »

Director: Neil Jordan.
Starring: Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan, Jonny Lee Miller, Caleb Landry Jones, Sam Riley.
Running Time: 118 minutes.
Certificate: 18.
Synopsis: Two young women flee from city to city, never staying too long so as to reveal who they truly are. They turn an abandoned hotel into a brothel to afford their secret lives and keep them alive.
Trying to cram in as much epic vampire-ness as possible, Byzantium (based on Moira Buffini’s play) regrettably misses too many great opportunities to become a memorable and respectable vampire movie. It wants us to believe there is a mystery behind the two women and that they carry a heavy secret. But they divulge too much of themselves to be mysterious creatures of the night, merely a mother and daughter whose dysfunctional relationship has miraculously survived for two hundred years.
The disappointing mystery surrounding their vampirism is the idiocy of both women. »

There may be a modern-day version of the great detective already, but this Us take has its own clear identity – and a great cast of women
When CBS announced Elementary, a modern-day reworking of Sherlock Holmes, it was met with the sort of eye-rolling that meant, "Don't we already have one of those?" And when Sue Vertue, producer of the BBC's Sherlock, mentioned that CBS had approached them about making a Us version of their show, it all seemed rather dastardly.
And it all went full-Moriarty when CBS announced moves that seemed to be designed to infuriate Holmesian purists (and Victoria Coren). The show would be set in the Us. (Ew!) Watson was going to be a woman. (Ew!) Watson was going to be American. (Ewww!)
All the evidence said Elementary was going to be rubbish, but that would turn out to be wrong. However improbable, this has turned out to be a good, »

Lord Sugar tells his competing wazzocks to pack for Dubai, the city of gaudy excess and needless acquisition. They'll fit right in. They must buy eight items for the opening of a new hotel and the owner is a very important client, a bit like Mr Udigawa in Neighbours. It's a straight test of their haggling skills but obviously there is confusion over what the items actually are, despite Dubai resident Zeeshaan heading up one of the teams. The boardroom meltdown at the end is a comedy classic. Julia Raeside

Director: Neil Jordan; Screenwriter: Moira Buffini; Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton, Caleb Landry Jones, Sam Riley; Running time: 118 mins; Certificate: 15
Finally, a full-blooded and truly original vampire movie, offering an antidote to the Sweet Valley-style sudsiness of the Twilight franchise. Although Saoirse Ronan plays a love-struck teenage vampire, two hundred years of walking the Earth gives her a broader perspective on life and it weighs on her, painfully. But if she's the heart of the film, Gemma Arterton is the guts of it as mother Clara.
Much blood is spilled and heads literally roll (to startling effect), but director Neil Jordan is as much concerned with the psychological burden of killing, echoing his 1994 classic Interview with the Vampire. Except in this adaptation of Moira Buffini's play (she also wrote the script), the bloodsucking becomes a metaphor for the constant yet stifling flow of a mother's love.

The sun has set (or risen?) on Summit Entertainment’s venerable vampire series — but even though it, like Robsten, is officially kaput, Twilight still holds a hypnotic power over people of a certain age. (That age is “young.”)
