Interview: Zach Braff Kickstarts His New Film ‘Wish I Was Here’

14 July 2014 7:19 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Zach Braff is an amiable personality, making his mark as “J.D.” on the TV sitcom “Scrubs” and the cult film “Garden State” (2004), which he wrote and directed. For his most recent project, he made show business headlines by using the website Kickstarter to “crowd fund” his latest film, “Wish I Was Here.”

Wish I Was Here,” like “Garden State,” is a coming-of-age film. But this time Braff – who stars in the film, co-wrote it with his brother Adam, and directed it – portrays a 35 year old struggling actor with a wife (Kate Hudson) and two kids, coming to terms with his father’s (Mandy Patinkin) illness and possible passing. Like “Garden State,” it has a dream-like quality to it, while dealing with a different phase of life.

The Definitive War Movies: 10-1

2 July 2014 8:30 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Here we are, at the top of the mountain. We’ve had plenty from every war imaginable, some supportive of war efforts, some not. But the more interesting war films really focus on the people; the internal struggles those men and women have about what they are doing. Whether made in America, Germany, the United Kingdom, or anywhere else, war is not just a battle between good and evil. It’s a life and death struggle between opposing sides that may not be that different. The movies at the top of this list may be subtle or straightforward, but each of them is a clear snapshot that lets audiences see what it means to fight, so they don’t have to.

Looking back at Clone High

Mark looks back at Phil Lord and Chris Miller's ahead-of-its-time animated MTV series, Clone High...

Feature

Previously, on a very special episode of Clone High...

“Way, way back in the 1980s, secret government employees dug up famous guys and ladies and made amusing genetic copies. Now the clones are sexy teens and they're gonna make it if they try.”

So goes the theme tune to Clone High, the MTV animated series that ran for one season from 2002 to 2003. As a concept for a TV series goes, there's a hell of a lot of mileage in doing a teen drama featuring the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Gandhi, Joan of Arc, John F Kennedy and Cleopatra in school together.

The series was animated in the style of Genndy Tartakovsky’s hand-drawn animated series, such as Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack, with stylised character design and slightly more limited movement, making »

10 Most Unwatchable TV to Movie Adaptations

10 June 2014 2:30 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

22 Jump Street is in theaters this weekend, and its one of the few TV-to-Movie franchises that has gotten it right. This comes after so many have gotten it really wrong! Adapting a hit television show to the big screen seems like it would be an easy thing. The source material is great, there's an existing audience, it should be money in the bank. But bigger does not mean better. There's more than enough examples of great TV turned into garbage cinema. So much so, there was a fair amount of difficulty and debate narrowing it down to ten, epically awful movies. Criteria had to be established. There must be a method to this madness. Terrible films like The Smurfs, Scooby Doo, Yogi Bear, or The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas still has an appeal to younger audiences who might actually be entertained by it. It does have some value. Interview: Bill Lawrence and Adam Sztykiel on 'Undateable' and The State of TV Comedy

29 May 2014 1:21 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

I interviewed "Undateable" executive producer Bill Lawrence and Adam Sztykiel at a noisy bar in Pasadena shortly before a press conference in mid-April. Going back and transcribing the 35-minute interview is bittersweet. At the time, Lawrence had two shows in limbo -- TBS' "Cougar Town" and Fox's newly premiered "Surviving Jack," which he EPed along with creators Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker. While Lawrence wasn't directly involved with "Enlisted," he has a close relationship with "Enlisted" and "Cougar Town" creator Kevin Biegel, whose comedy was newly shelved. Since that time, "Enlisted" and "Surviving Jack" were both cancelled. "Cougar Town" was renewed for a final season on TBS. At the time, Lawrence also wasn't feeling especially confident about "Undateable." The multi-cam sitcom, which features Chris D'Elia as seemingly cocksure ladies man Danny, who mentors the less confident Justin (Brent Morin) and his group of allegedly "undateable" friends. The Real-Life Story of a Teenage Drug Smuggler, Kid Cannabis is an Inane Celebration

15 April 2014 9:00 PM, PDT | Village Voice | See recent Village Voice news »

Closing with N.W.A.'s anti-authority anthem "Fuck tha Police," Kid Cannabis celebrates drug dealing via the real-life story of Nate Norman (Jonathan Daniel Brown), an overweight, nerdy teenage high-school dropout who, in 2005, teamed up with best friend Topher (Kenny Wormald) to smuggle ungodly amounts of marijuana across the Canadian border into Idaho.

Nate does this because he loves weed and hates being poor, and John Stockwell's film endorses his decision, not because of pot-legalization convictions, but because it sees Nate as a daring entrepreneur assured enough to partner with both a talented supplier (John C. McGinley) and an intimidating investor (Ron Perlman), as well as run his own motley crew of mules. Narrating his saga with grating clichés — "E »

'Surviving Jack' star Christopher Meloni looks back on 'Svu,' 'Oz' & more

26 March 2014 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Christopher Meloni has had the kind of varied, almost schizophrenic, and very vivid acting career in which the first thing you see him in would likely color your perceptions of him for years to come. I first encountered him in the sixth season of “1st & Ten,” a raunchy ‘80s HBO comedy about a pro football team whose cast at various points included Delta Burke, Shannon Tweed, O.J. Simpson and, for a season — as an ex-con quarterback calling himself Johnny Gunn — a young Meloni. (Here’s the opening credits for that season.) As a result of that and a few other sitcom roles immediately after, I thought of him as a comedy guy and was thrown when he would pop up playing intense dramatic roles in the ‘90s on shows like “NYPD Blue,” “Homicide” and, for a long and memorable stretch, “Oz,” HBO’s first original dramatic series, in which Meloni »

TBS renews 'Ground Floor' for second season

6 March 2014 2:35 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Get ready for more upstairs/downstairs sitcom hijinks, because TBS announced on Thursday (March 6) that it has renewed "Ground Floor" for a second season. One of last fall's pleasant comedy surprises, "Ground Floor" averaged 1.8 million viewers in Live+7 numbers, including 1.1 million in the 18-49 demo. That's not especially huge, but it still rated among 2013's top 10 basic cable sitcoms in the key demo.  The 10-episode second season will premiere in late 2014, picking up from the first season finale which potentially left our main character Brody (Skylar Astin) having made a pivotal decision in his ongoing struggle to balance work and new love Jennifer (Briga Heelan). Will everything be forever changed? Probably not! In addition to Astin and Heelan, "Ground Floor," stars John C. McGinley, Rory Scovel, Alexis Knapp, James Earl and Rene Gube. The comedy is produced by Bill Lawrence, Jeff Ingold and Jeff Astrof. [Now if only Lawrence could get NBC to give "Undateable" a premiere date.] Sepinwall »

Ground Floor: Season One Ratings

18 January 2014 4:46 PM, PST | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

TBS has had mixed success with their original sitcoms. Will Ground Floor be a ratings success or, will this comedy be cancelled before it can see a second season?

Ground Floor follows the romantic relationship of a young hotshot banker (Skylar Astin) and a beautiful maintenance worker (Briga Heelan). The rest of the sitcom's cast includes Rory Scovel, Rene Gube, James Earl, Alexis Knapp, and John C. McGinley.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually on Tuesdays.

Final season averages: 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.48 million total viewers.
