The Belko Experiment review: Dir. Greg McLean (2017)

18 April 2017 5:14 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The Belko Experiment review: Guardians Of The Galaxy’s James Gunn brings his low-budget splatter-fest to screens, uniting with genre favourite, Wolf Creek’s Greg McLean.

The Belko Experiment review by Paul Heath.

James Gunn returns to his horror roots for this throwback thriller set in the confines of a towering office block in present-day Bogotá, Colombia. The film revolves around 80 employees whose lives are plunged into immediate danger when the entire building is put into lock-down with an unseen control-freak manipulating them as pawns in a simple game where everyone must fight for their own survival. Specifically, a voice over the workplace’s intercom informs them that unless someone kills two company employees within the following thirty minutes, more will be instantly offed. Obviously, this ensures instant widespread panic amongst the individuals and is just the first part in a deadly social/ morality tale where anything can and does happen. »

The Belko Experiment Review

Author: Stefan Pape

To place ordinary people in life-threatening, desperate situations where it seems the only way to survive is at the expense of others, breeds compelling cinematic endeavours. Whether it be Battle Royale or The Hunger Games, or even going back further to Lord of the Flies, it’s this uncompromising study of the human condition and behaviour that intrigues us, posing many a hypothetical question within ourselves – and it’s this moral compass this lays the foundations for the narrative to Greg McLean’s The Belko Experiment to thrive off.

Set in a high-rise corporate building in a desolate Colombian landscape, Belko are a company that help to find work for American compatriots relocating to South America. Though a Government-run company, the employees find themselves part of a twisted and barbaric experiment, whereby the doors are locked, and a voice booms over the intercom to claim that if »

Box Office Democracy: The Belko Experiment

22 March 2017 7:59 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

I saw two different kinds of ads for The Belko Experiment before it came out.  There were ads that were pitching it as a more or less straight up horror movie, and then there were ads that were selling it as a kind of comedy-horror hybrid.  It used a quote from an early review saying it was “Office Space meets Battle Royale” and while that’s a fine thing for a critic to say in a review as a shorthand to explain the movie, as an advertisement it’s completely inadequate.  The Belko Experiment isn’t funny and 99% of the time doesn’t even seem to be trying to be funny.  It’s more like Battle Royale meets a tall building or Battle Royale meets Die Hard if you want to just completely ignore anything that made Die Hard a good movie and just want to focus on the general aesthetic of the sets. »

Beauty and the Beast Breaks Box Office Records with $170M

19 March 2017 12:39 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last month, box office analysts were predicting that Disney's long-awaited live-action remake of Beauty and the BEast will take in $120 million at the box office, a debut that most studios would be happy with for any film. As we got closer and closer to the release, the projections started to increase, with some predicting it could earn upwards of $150 million, which would still put it just short of the all-time highest March opening, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice's $166.1 million tally last year. It seems Beauty and the Beast has outdone itself, besting all projections for a record-breaking $170 million box office estimate.

Disney itself was downplaying those projections, with their own internal estimates placing their debut at $100 million. Box Office Mojo reports that Beauty and the Beast debuted in 4,210 theaters, earning an impressive $40,380 per-screen average. While this 4,210-theater rollout is certainly large, it ranks as the 29th widest of all time, »

Breaking Down the Truly Gruesome End of The Belko Experiment

18 March 2017 1:45 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Spoilers for The Belko Experiment below. The Belko Experiment first popped up on our radar with its graphic, gory trailer, and we can confirm that the movie is just as brutally horrifying as promised. The long-simmering project written by Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn draws heavy inspiration from director Kinji Fukasaku's Battle Royale, but its lack of profundity or satire (or rather, enough satire) makes it a truly grueling hour and a half to endure. If you'd rather skip 90 minutes of exploding heads and Tony Goldwyn acting less like President Fitzgerald Grant and more like Carl Bruner (classic Ghost reference), we're here to break it down for you. So What's the Deal? Belko Industries employee Mike Milch (John Gallagher Jr., who deserves better than this) arrives at his remote office building in rural Bogotá, Colombia, only to see a new fleet of security guards turning all the »

The Belko Experiment Review: A Grim But Effective Social Thriller

17 March 2017 7:00 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

There was a time before Guardians of the Galaxy when filmmaker James Gunn was better known for horror films like Slither and for writing the screenplay for Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake. One of the movies Gunn had been talking about making for almost as long was a violent high-concept thriller called The Belko Experiment, which as you can guess from the title, has finally seen the light of day. (Gunn went on to make the low-budget action-comedy Super, got the gig directing Guardians and the rest is history.)

The Belko Corporation has a large branch office building in the middle of Bogota, Colombia, and we meet the company’s CEO Barry Norris (Tony Goldwyn from Scandal) as he’s arriving at work and noticing the new armed security detail carefully checking everyone entering the building. Before we can think too much about this, we meet Melonie Diaz »

Review: The Belko Experiment is a Viciously Entertaining Exploration of Workplace Survival

16 March 2017 9:57 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Anyone who has spent countless hours stuck in a cubicle under fluorescent lighting, listening to their fellow employees prattle on about nonsense will find a lot to relate to in Greg McLean’s The Belko Experiment, which takes the notion of office politics to explosive and viciously entertaining levels where no one is safe. The amount of carnage that McLean and writer James Gunn unleash in The Belko Experiment is jaw-dropping at times, and even if you’ve never been subjected to the horrors of corporate America, there’s still a lot of subversive fun to be had once the games begin and heads start popping.

In The Belko Experiment, John Gallagher Jr. (Hush, Short Term 12, 10 Cloverfield Lane) stars as Mike Milch, an employee of Belko Industries who has relocated to Bogotá, Columbia, and while he recognizes he’s just another cog in the wheel at his workplace, he »

James and Sean Gunn on ‘The Belko Experiment’ and How They Were ‘Saved’ by ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

16 March 2017 4:50 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As the writer-director behind cult hits like “Super” and “Slither” and the blockbuster “Guardians of the Galaxy,” James Gunn has worked with some of the biggest names in the business. But ask him who his favorite actor to work with is, and he doesn’t hesitate: it’s his brother, Sean Gunn.

He’s not just trying to keep family dinners peaceful. Sean is an accomplished teacher and actor, perhaps best known for his scene-stealing turn as Kirk on “The Gilmore Girls,” and has appeared in almost all of his older brother’s projects. “I’d rather have him as an actor than anybody else,” James notes. “We see things so similarly and having the same background, we have a shorthand of speaking. I can say something that would make sense to no one else, like, ‘Do it like Cousin Chuck would!’ ”

The new few weeks see two new collaborations between the duo. »
