Several beloved comedy series are in the TV Land Awards spotlight as the nostalgia-driven network televises the 10th-anniversary edition of the event Sunday, April 29. Kelly Ripa returns as host of the ceremony, taped two weekends earlier at New York's Lexington Avenue Armory at Gramercy Park, and the casts of the honored shows alone guarantee the room to be filled with familiar faces.
ABC's "Laverne & Shirley," which starred Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams as the Milwaukee brewery co-workers and roommates, gets the Fan Favorite Award; CBS' "One Day at a Time," about a single working mother (Bonnie Franklin) and her teen daughters (Mackenzie Phillips, Valerie Bertinelli), receives the Innovator Award.
Also, CBS' vehicle for Pee-wee Herman (alias Paul Reubens), "Pee-wee's Playhouse," lands the Pop Culture Award; Keenen Ivory Wayans' Fox sketch comedy "In Living Color, »

"Laverne & Shirley" is basking in a new round of honor and nostalgic praise. The show will be honored with a fan favorite award at the upcoming TV Land Awards, and "Good Morning America" hosted a cast reunion Thursday morning.
The show's legendary creator Gary Marshall stopped by "Live! With Kelly" (weekdays on ABC) where he updated viewers on his sister Penny Marshall's health status and told a few funny stories about working with her.
"They think she's sick, she was sick 3 years ago. She's healthy and terrific ... they have old pictures" he said. Marshall was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in 2009.
Marshall went on to explain the unique challenges of working on a TV show with his sister. "Usually you do a show, you say 'Okay, we're done, goodbye, see you tomorrow, bye.' And I'd say that to Penny, but she'd follow me home. She'd come in »

HuffPost and our friends at Entertainment Tonight corralled a bevy of TV and movie stars and asked them a simple question: When did it all start?
We asked the likes of Jim Carrey, Fran Drescher, Carrie Ann Inaba, Penny Marshall, Bonnie Franklin and more to identify the moment they knew they had to be entertainers. "The Moment I Knew" is a HuffPost series that invites readers to identify moments that shaped their lives. You can see the video of their responses below.
Drescher said that she discovered acting didn't really feel like work -- and that's when she knew she had to make it her job. "That's what seemed the least like work," she said. "I could do it any time anybody asked me to, and I was happy to do it, so I thought, maybe I should try to make a living out of this."
Carrey had perhaps the most touching response, »

Penny Marshall deems the recent death of Whitney Houston a "very sad" loss.
"She was a great girl, and we got along fine," the television star turned movie director tells Zap2it about guiding the singer-actress through the 1996 musical drama "The Preacher's Wife" opposite Denzel Washington. "She sang beautifully, but like a baseball player doesn't pitch every day, you had to schedule certain things at certain times. You have to take the actors into consideration."
Marshall also took the use of Houston's vocal talents seriously: "I went to her mom's church in Newark [N.J.] and I went to Denzel's church out here [in Los Angeles], and we auditioned choirs. I had never done anything with music of the current time, because most of the movies I did were period pictures. 'Awakenings' was, certainly 'A League of Their Own' was, and so was 'Riding in Cars With Boys.'"

To celebrate the release of This Must Be The Place, I have listed ten films which share their name with songs. For those who don’t know, This Must Be The Place shares its name with the Talking Heads tune. And even though film and song have little in common, both song and Talking Heads front man David Byrne, appear in the film.
There is a proverbial bottomless pit of films and song which share a title. Some overtly, in reference to each other, whilst many are just tenuous links. My list has been dictated purely by a love of rock music. Bar one disco tune and a classic piece of soul; everything you are about to see is, like the film which inspired this list, connected to the warrior poets of melody. The likes of music based films such as The Wall or Yellow Submarine have been omitted for the sake of originality, »

Bryan Safi has entertained you in a bunch of seriously entertaining forums: He's played Marcus Bachmann in some unforgettable Funny Or Die videos, hosted the "That's Gay" segment on Current TV's much-missed infoMania, performs at L.A.'s Upright Citizens Brigade occasionally in "Entertainment Hollywood," and now he cohosts the uproariously funny podcast "Throwing Shade" with his infoMania costar Erin Gibson. He also won a Daytime Emmy as a staff writer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which is impressive if you worship award shows. Which I would never do.
We sat down with Safi (@bryansafi) to shoot the breeze about pop culture, his podcast, and the real-life benefits of reality TV. Also, he has a crush on Chris Matthews. Pass it on.

Cindy Williams didn't doubt two of her best-known co-stars would become well-known filmmakers.
The actress played Ron Howard's girlfriend in the 1973 movie classic "American Graffiti," then worked with him again on the ABC sitcom "Happy Days" ... which yielded the hugely successful spinoff "Laverne & Shirley," teaming Williams with Penny Marshall. Still good friends, the women will reunite when their enduringly popular show gets the Fan Favorite honor at the TV Land Awards, to be televised by the nostalgia-driven network Sunday, April 29.
"Ron kept jumping out of the car during 'American Graffiti' and talking to Haskell Wexler, the cinematographer," Williams recalls to Zap2it about making the George Lucas-directed ode to teen life circa 1962. "He'd get back in the car -- we had no dressing rooms, so we'd sit in the car between takes -- and I'd ask him, 'What are you doing?' And he'd say, 'I'm »

Some were huge in their day, with hit records, popular movies and roles on top TV shows. But we haven’t seen them much lately — or for years. Here’s what they’ve been up to recently.
Sam Jones
The onetime Playgirl centerfold and star of Flash Gordon (1980) went on to star in 1986’s My Chauffer and the 1987-88 TV series The Highwayman. While starring roles were hard to come by, Jones occasionally appeared in minor TV and movie roles up until 2007. He is reportedly now the CEO of a security company providing protection for high-profile clients all over the world.
For those too young to know of her, think Shakira’s dance moves and Sofia Vergara’s sexy comic timing — in one person. Known for her trademark “Cuchi-Cuchi” and her frequent Love Boat and Tonight Show appearances in the ’70s and ’80s, Charo, whose full name is Maria »

London, March 18: Actor Mark Wahlberg almost lost a movie role because of a fight with Madonna's friend at a party.
The actor, known for his wild past, says because of the fight he almost missed out a part in his 1994 breakthrough film "Renaissance Man".
"I almost didn't get the part. I got into a fight at a party in La with three guys and broke a guy's nose. It was a few of Madonna's people, so she called the cops on me. Told everyone this story. Penny Marshall, the producer called me saying, 'What did you do?', but then she was like,'Forget that, I'm giving you the part anyway," contactmusic.com quoted the actor.

Sidney Poitier turned 85 this past Monday. For those of you who have read my memoir Mississippi Sissy you know he becomes a kind of motif in it, his very name the incantation that our family's maid would say to herself whenever she heard the n-word in her presence, a word she even heard from me the morning after Poitier won the Oscar. He was the first African American to win the award for Best Actor and I asked Matty May, as she was making my bed the next morning before I went to second grade, if she could "believe a n----r won Best Actor." It was a pivotal moment in my life and it is a pivotal scene in the book -- as is my seeing Matty May a few years later as we both picked cotton on my uncle's farm and I overheard her quietly saying his name, "PoitierPoitierPoitier, »

I was fortunate enough to meet Whitney Houston at her career peak. It was late 1996, and she was promoting her forthcoming movie, "The Preacher's Wife." No one knew at the time that she was at her zenith, that her first tastes of failure were soon to follow, and that she was at the end of her glory years and at the beginning of a long, slow, sad decline from which she would never fully recover. When I interviewed her, there were only a few hints of the downward spiral she had already embarked upon. Years later, we would learn that she was already using drugs daily at this time, but I saw no sign of her dependency. The Houston I met lived up to her image as pop's serene, supreme majesty. She was regal and elegant. She sported a diamond ring the size of an ice rink. She hinted at »
