Snag This: Vietnam, Long Time Coming

27 May 2009 1:10 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

In honor of Memorial Day, our friends at SnagFilms are hosting a special section of films with the intention "to honor the fallen, and to reflect on our own duties of remembrance and action." The eleven documentaries cover a good range of subjects; the one that first caught my eye is Vietnam, Long Time Coming.

Directed by Jerry Blumenthal, Peter Gilbert, and Gordon Quinn, and narrated by Joe Mantegna, the film chronicles "a gathering of American and Vietnamese veterans, many of them disabled, who collectively travel on bicycles and hand cycles [on a] 1,200 mile, 16-day journey" through Vietnam, wrote Jonathan Rosenbaum of the Chicago Reader when naming the movie among his 10 best of 1998. Rosenbaum felt that "all sorts of issues -- from the corporate sponsorship to the music on the sound track to the status of the undertaking as a sporting event -- get in the way, despite the intelligent and purposeful narration delivered by Joe Mantegna.

Video: Katharine McPhee, Trace Adkins Singing in Memorial Day Concert

25 May 2009 7:40 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

Video performances during PBS' National Memorial Day Concert on Sunday, May 24 have hit the web, some of which featured "American Idol" alum Katharine McPhee. They showed the 25-year-old singer making a duet with pianist Lang Lang in a song titled "America the Beautiful" and performing solo in another track called "Somewhere".

Another musical guest hitting the annual event at the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol was Trace Adkins. He performed solo in "Til the Last Shot's Fired", one of the songs from his 2008 album "X". He also collaborated with Katharine, Denyce Graves and Colm Wilkinson in "This Is My Country".

Greater than that, the gig was also attended by Hollywood public figures, including Katie Holmes, Gary Sinise, Joe Mantegna, Dianne Wiest, Laurence Fishburne and Brian Stokes Mitchell. They took the stage during Trace and Katharine's duet song.

Jeremy Piven fight for Tony Award goes to round two

26 March 2009 11:25 AM, PDT | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

Three-time Emmy Award winner Jeremy Piven ("Entourage") is being brought before an arbitrator who will decide whether the actor owes damages to the Broadway producers of "Speed-the-Plow" for his abrupt departure from the hit show in December. Piven said he left because of fatigue brought on by high levels of mercury in his bloodstream. And the reason given for these elevated levels? His sushi addiction. As the play's author, David Mamet, acidly remarked at the time, "My understanding is that he is leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer."

At the first hearing on this matter in mid-February, Jeremy Piven won over the five actors in attendance with his tale of woe while the five producing representatives remained unconvinced. Now the producers of the show just need to win over one man, arbitrator George Nicolau. The producers did minimize their losses as Piven's replacements — first Tony winner

'Criminal Minds' Goes Linda Blair!

10 March 2009 1:30 PM, PDT | From FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news

CBS's procedural drama Criminal Minds is going to a dark place this week – even darker than normal.  The show, which follows a team of FBI behavioral analysts as they investigate some of the most gruesome killings imaginable, will investigate a series of deaths that allegedly occurred during exorcisms.  And, honestly, who doesn't love a good "The power of Christ compels you" story now and again? The episode, "Demonology," will air March 11 at 9:00pm on CBS.  Show regulars include Joe Mantegna, Thomas Gibson and Paget Brewster.  And the special guest star this week should be of particular interest to TV genre fans -- it's James Remar (a.k.a. Dexter's dad).

Jeremy Piven fights for his right to a Tony Award

27 February 2009 1:25 PM, PST | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

Three-time Emmy Award winner Jeremy Piven ("Entourage") attended an arbitration hearing Thursday to defend himself before the Broadway community. Jeremy Piven was brought up before Actors Equity by the producers of "Speed-the-Plow" to explain why he exited the hit show in mid-December, just weeks after making his Broadway debut to rave reviews.

At the time Jeremy Piven said it was because of fatigue brought on by high levels of mercury in his bloodstream. And the reason given for these elevated levels? Sushi. The play's author, David Mamet, acidly remarked, "My understanding is that he is leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer." Even Mark Wahlberg, exec producer of "Entourage," mocked Piven for making this excuse when the pair attended the Golden Globe Awards in January. Both the show and Piven lost their bids.

At the hearing Jeremy Piven won over the five actors in attendance with his

Spring Preview: Rian Johnson on The Festival of Fakery

23 February 2009 5:52 AM, PST | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

When Rian Johnson attended USC in the '90s, he had a certain criteria that needed to be met when choosing an apartment. "It was walking distance from the New Beverly," says Johnson, who's been living in the same place near the venerable Los Angeles revival house ever since. Thanks to a collision of fate, whimsy and just a little bit of conniving reminiscent of his latest film, the thoroughly delightful conman caper "The Brothers Bloom," Johnson will take over programming duties at the theater starting tonight in what's being billed as "Rian Johnson's Festival of Fakery, a week of films regarding frauds, fakers, charlatans, hoaxters, huxters and other unsavory sorts." Johnson follows other recent guest programmers at the theater that include Edgar Wright, Diablo Cody and Peter Bogdanovich, and will be onhand every night of the festival to give introductions to the films. Fortunately, if you're not in L.

The Starter Wife mini-series stars Debra Messing as Molly Kagan, a Hollywood wife/mother who has it all. Her life is turned upside down when her studio exec husband, Kenny (Peter Jacobson, later David Alan Basche), dumps her for a young starlet. SXSW 09: Full lineup announced

1 February 2009 9:12 PM, PST | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.

From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.

For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.

I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..

Lineup after the break.

Falk's Pals Back Wife's Care Bid

30 January 2009 4:55 PM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Showbiz pals of Columbo star Peter Falk are backing his wife's fight for the right to care for the actor as he battles Alzheimer's disease. Last month, Falk's adopted daughter, Catherine Falk, filed papers claiming her father has dementia and Alzheimer's disease and can no longer care for himself. Catherine is asking the court to name her his conservator.

But last week, Falk's second wife, Shera, fought back by filing her own court papers, insisting he should be allowed to remain at home with her.

She alleges her husband of 32 years never attended Catherine's wedding and has never even met her children.

And a clutch of close friends, including actress Gena Rowlands, actor Joe Mantegna and late TV host Johnny Carson's ex-wife Joanna, have rushed to support Shera.

In court documents, Rowlands insists, "Shera has taken extremely good care (of Falk) over the years", while Godfather: Part III star Mantegna adds, "Shera is the closest person to Peter in his life... there is no person second to her."
