Dustin Lance Black not only wrote but also directed the new film Virginia.
While he’s best known for writing landmark biographical motion pictures like Milk and J. Edgar and dramatic television like HBO’s Big Love, Dustin Lance Black’s latest film is much more personal to him. In Virginia, which opens this weekend in New York and Los Angeles, actress Jennifer Connelly plays the title character, a mother who is raising her young son (Harrison Gilbertson), and having an affair with the town Sheriff (Ed Harris) who happens to be Mormon and also happens to have a form of schizophrenia.
While the film is not exactly autobiographical, Black talked to AfterElton earlier this week about how he pulled from his own life for the script, which he also directs, how the initial negative reactions he received for the film only made him work harder, and what he’ll say to President Obama, »

This one’s for Martha …
Nothing like a good book to get the rabble-rousers going.
In Field Of Dreams, Ray Kinsella’s wife, played by Amy Madigan, successfully shuts down the effort to ban Terence Mann’s books from the local Iowa school system. Terence Mann – played by James Earl Jones – was based on J.D. Salinger, the reclusive author of Catcher In The Rye.
Catcher was published in 1951, and has pretty much stayed on “attempts to ban it” lists since its publication. In fact, it was the most censored book in America from 1961 to 1982, even though, according to Wikipedia, it was the “second most taught book in United States public schools.” It most recently reappeared on the “most challenged books” list, published by American Library Association, in 2009.
These are some of the books I remember being on the curriculum when I was in school, along some that I missed because »

Here's the first trailer to a new dramedy called Virginia that comes from screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and stars Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly and Emma Roberts. This is Black's first attempt at directing a feature film; he blew up in Hollywood after he won an Academy Award for Milk. Since then he's written J. Edgar for Clint Eastwood and episodes of HBO's Big Love. Unfortunately, this movie doesn't really look that good, but maybe some of you might see something in it that I didn't.
Here's the synopsis for the film:
Jennifer Connelly stars in the title role as a beautiful yet unhinged single mother who struggles to raise her son Emmett (Harrison Gilbertson) while dreaming of escaping her small Southern boardwalk town. Her long time affair with the very married, Mormon Sheriff Richard Tipton (Ed Harris) is thrown into question when he decides to run for public office. Things »

Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black’s directorial debut, Virginia, major tagline echoes the search: ‘The simple life…is rarely simple.’ Originally titled What’s Wrong with Virginia? and screened at Tiff 2010, the drama has an all-star cast that includes Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Emma Roberts, Amy Madigan, Yeardley Smith, Harrison Gilbertson, and Toby Jones. It’s obvious that [...]

Dustin Lance Black is best known for his work as a writer, but he's been slowly developing as a director over the last decade or so. While most of what he's done has consisted of shorts and documentaries, his first feature, The Journey of Jared Price, came out all the way back in 2000, long before he won the Academy Award for his work on the script for Gus Van Sant's Milk. It's been a long time since Black has run a production of his own, his last directorial effort coming in the form of a 2004 episode of Faking It, but now's he's making his return with the upcoming Virginia. First premiering at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival, the drama has an all-star cast that includes Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Emma Roberts, Amy Madigan, Yeardley Smith, Harrison Gilbertson, and Toby Jones. It's taken a while to get to the States, but »

The first trailer and poster for Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black’s (Milk) directorial debut, Virginia, have gone online. The film was originally titled What’s Wrong with Virginia? and screened at Tiff 2010 to scathing reviews. Black went back into the editing room and retooled (and retitled) the film, and now the new cut is set to open next month. The film stars Jennifer Connelly as a single mother who runs into a bit of trouble following a string of events: her longtime affair with the married Mormon Sheriff (Ed Harris) comes to an end as he decides to run for office, then her son (Harrison Gilbertson) starts having an affair with the Sheriff’s daughter (Emma Roberts). Tonally and plot-wise, this trailer is kind of all over the place. There are some good ideas throughout, but I’m unsure as to how Black coalesces everything into a cohesive story. »

Unless I am mistaken, there was only one film during the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival I did not review. That film was What's Wrong with Virginia. I despised the film on most every level, but speaking about it now, and seeing this just released trailer for it, I can tell you right now they aren't selling the film for what it is. Even the opening scene shown in the trailer is a lie. In the film it doesn't play as comical as much as it is tragic. he film will be distributed by eOne Films on May 18 under the title Virginia, which, like the trailer, is an attempt to soften the more tragic elements of the film. To get to that point, here's the synopsis: Written and directed by Dustin Lance Black (Milk), Virginia stars Jennifer Connelly in the title role as a beautiful yet unhinged single mother who struggles »

It’s been nearly 20 months since I saw the first screening of Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black‘s directorial debut, then titled What’s Wrong With Virginia. Premiering at Tiff 2010 to tepid response, the film has gone through more than just a title change. Now streamlined as just Virginia, the Milk and J. Edgar screenwriter has done a complete re-edit the film. I can’t speak to the quality of its current state, but what I saw had a occasionally strong, if unbalanced lead performance from Jennifer Connelly and the rest was a tonal mess.
We’ve got a debut trailer today which certainly packs a lot more energy than what I saw, but then again, that’s what marketing is for. Here’s hoping Black has at least improved with this cut. Check it out below via Apple, along with a poster, for the film also starring Harrison Gilbertson, Ed Harris, »

With the Tribeca Film Festival kicking off today, it’s high time we dove into our coverage of New York City’s hometown fest. To that end, it’s our great pleasure to debut the first poster for writer-director-producer Jenny Deller‘s Future Weather, the multi-hyphenate’s first feature, which will have its world premiere next week. The film centers on young Lauduree, a lonely teenager who has a serious interest in environmentalism and nature and who is already worried about the effects of environmental disaster on the world at large. But it’s Lauduree’s world that is about to be turned on its head, when her shiftless single mom leaves her for sunshiny California. Abandoned, alone, and terrified, Lauduree comes under the care of her grandmother, who comes with her own pack of issues that shouldn’t serve much comfort to the already fragile Lauduree. The film stars a wonderful cast of known and new »
