"Die Hard"
“Now I have a machine gun. Ho Ho Ho.” These words, written on a dead bad guy’s shirt by New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) and uttered by the Grinchiest of movie menaces Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), exemplify why Christmas at Nakatomi Plaza is so much fun. »

Have you ever wondered what happened to all the couples from 2003′s Love Actually? I watch it often enough that I’ve spent way too much time thinking about this. ‘Tis the season to watch Love Actually with your family and have to listen — for the thousandth time — about how much your dad hates that sleazebag secretary Mia for ruining Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson’s marriage!
Let’s think about this for real. David and Natalie (Hugh Grant and Martine McCutcheon, pictured) made a great couple in that they were so different, but would their relationship crumble in the national spotlight? »

Hot on the heels of two Golden Globe nominations, HBO has picked up "Enlightened" for a second season. The ratings-challenged dramedy was a surprising inclusion in the Globes' Best Comedy/Musical Series category while Laura Dern picked up an expected bid for Best Comedy/Musical Actress. Dern -- who won Globes for telefilms "Recount" (2008, supporting) and "Afterburn" (1992, lead) and reaped Emmy nods for both -- could well prevail again this year. She does, however, face a challenge from Zooey Deschanel ("New Girl"). Both actresses compete for new series as did the last two champs: Laura Linney ("The Big C") and Toni Collette ("United States of Tara"). The news from HBO was not all good as Thomas Jane's second consecutive Globe bid for Best Comedy Actor could not save "Hung" from getting the chop after three seasons. Critics and audiences alike failed to embrace this show about a hig »

Michael C here to take stock of the performers left in the dust by the recent rush of precursors.
With the announcement of the Golden Globes and SAG nominations behind us the first round of the elaborate Kabuki dance known as Precursor Season is concluded. A week ago we could let our imaginations run wild with the possibilities of our favorite performances making good. Now if an actor hasn’t heard his or her name called by either group? Well, as George C. Scott once said to Peter Sellers, their chances have been quickly reduced to a very low order of probability.
So how low is low? What are the chances of a performance getting nominated without a Globe or SAG nomination?
Approximately 1 in 20. That's what my remarkably un-scientific research tells me. For this I took a look at the last 10 years. If you go back too far the stats become less relevant. »

David Thomson continues our writers' favourite film series with a look at the Jim Carrey film that changed his – and Truman Burbank's – life
Does this review speak the truth? Write your own version here or escape to the comments world beyond (and below)
What I liked first about The Truman Show when I went to see it in 1998 was knowing so little about it in advance. Had I been sheltered somehow? Or in those days was it possible to come upon a movie like a novice, or a stranger from a remote part of the world? Imagine even if it had been the first film you saw: it might have explained the entire medium!
Against that, once I started watching the picture, I said to myself: "Oh, yes, I know this. I know what this is going to be." I don't mean I had thought of the idea myself, or could have done it, »

“New Girl,” “American Horror Story” and “Revenge,” set in New York’s tony Hamptons, are breaking-through shows in this year’s race for Golden Globe television honors. But they’ll be going up against veterans “30 Rock,” “Modern Family” and “Glee.” Zooey Deschanel, who stars in “New Girl,” is the surprise newcomer for best actress comedy series, but she’ll face tough competition from veterans Laura Dern, “Enlightened,” Tina Fey, “30 Rock,” Laura Linney, “The Big C” and Amy Poehler, “Parks And Recreation.” Also joining the list of first-time nominees were Peter Dinklage, “Game of Thrones,” Claire Danes, “Homeland,” Kelsey Grammer, “Boss” and Mireille Enos, “The Killing.” »

This year's Golden Globe nominations have been announced with The Weinstein Company's "The Artist" scoring the most nods with six. Combined with numerous other wins from various critics associations, the black-and-white silent film has become the clear front runner in the run-up to the Oscars.
Not far behind at the Globes are "The Descendants" and "The Help" which both scored five, while "The Ides of March," "Midnight in Paris" and "Moneyball" got four. All the above mentioned also got Best Picture nominations, joined by "War Horse" and "Hugo" in the drama category along with "50/50", "Bridesmaids" and "My Week with Marilyn" in the comedy/musical section. Also of note is that Ryan Gosling scored nominations for Best Actor in both drama ("The Ides of March") and comedy ("Crazy Stupid Love"). Big shockers were the lack of nominations for both "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close".
