The Top Ten ‘Top Ten of the Decade Lists’ of the Decade… List

There are two things that upset me about the ‘09’ year of each decade. Firstly, I am confused by the global conviction that this constitutes the end of a decade. As far as I am concerned, a decade begins in year ‘1’, not year ‘0’. Of course, either option is equally viable; but surely this impenetrable ambiguity should completely remove the need to celebrate the death of one decade and the birth of another?
My second annoyance is a direct result of the first… the abhorrent and feverish proliferation of ‘top ten films of the decade’ lists. Top ten lists are nothing more than arbitrary attempts to recall and compress our favourite memories in order to free up more space for the next decade. Quantifying the mystical and romantic beauty of the cinema is a disastrous exercise; and it saddens me to see so many otherwise respectable film critics doing just this.

Downey continued sarcastically: 'You can actually get things expunged, but I've been pretty busy. So I was detained, I was interrogated. It was a blast.' Robert Downey Jr.'s troubled past came back to bite him on a trip to Japan, where he was promoting 'Iron Man' last year. He told David Letterman Wednesday night that he was hassled at the airport for years-old felony convictions, "not recent stuff like you or Tiger."
"I probably should have seen there was a sign that said 'No Felons Allowed' in English and Japanese and I haven't had that expunged yet," he said. "You can actually get things expunged but I've been pretty busy. So I was detained, I was interrogated. It was a blast."
"Haven't you settled up? Haven't you paid your debts?" Letterman asked.
"Clearly I haven't paid my debts to Japan," said Downey.

After skewering Tiger Woods on her own show, Wanda Sykes stopped by The Tonight Show last night to take a few shots at him with Conan O'Brien. "It just got to the point where I was like, 'Okay, I can't do anymore jokes on this man. I can't do it.' But more stuff keeps comin' out," she said. "Women after women after women. I'm like, I had to stop for a minute and go, 'Wait a minute. Did I have sex with Tiger Woods?'.... Then I was like, 'Oh wait a minute. I'm black. I'm cool. I'm cool.

Even cinema superheroes don't get special treatment in Japan. And you would really think they would.
"Iron Man 2" star Robert Downey Jr. explained his recent embarrassing run-in with the law in Japan, where he was detained at the airport because of his old felony drug record.
"I probably should have seen there was a sign that said 'No Felons Allowed' in English and Japanese and I haven't had that expunged yet," he told David Letterman this week. "You can actually get things expunged but I've been pretty busy. So I was detained, I was interrogated. It was a blast."
"Haven't you settled up? Haven't you paid your debts?" Letterman asked with a smile.
"Clearly I haven't paid my debts to Japan," said Downey, who was on the show to promote his new film, "Sherlock Holmes."
That's Ok, Robert. The Us government owes Japan around $750 billion too.
He's right about that.

Sarah Jessica Parker is shocked by her twin girls' developing personalities, because they are so "different."
The Sex and the City star used a surrogate mother to welcome little Marion and Tabitha in June - and already her daughters are showing how individual they are.
Parker, who also has a seven-year-old son, James Wilkie, with husband Matthew Broderick, showed off pictures of the tots to U.S. talk show host David Letterman.
She told him, "They are physically, intellectually, spiritually, geographically, politically, ideologically, religiously, as different as two small six-month-olds could be. One of them is a Republican, which is weird, but we have Mets and Yankees fans in our house too, so we’re used to a divided house.”
She also said James has been "very hospitable" welcoming his baby siblings into the family.

She said: “I had a mole removed. I didn’t have strong feelings against it, I didn’t object to it, I just didn’t care for it. So I had six free days where I could be bloodied and scabbed, and no one would care
“I didn’t think a thing about it and then it turns into mole-gate and my son tells me he misses it – I feel like I should’ve consulted more people about it!”
Sarah – who is married to actor Matthew Broderick – also revealed how James is adjusting after becoming a big brother to twins Marion Loretta and Tabitha Hodge, who were born in June via a surrogate.

Sarah Jessica Parker has explained the reason behind her "mole-gate." The "Sex and the City" star explained to David Letterman on the "Late Show" why she opted to have her famous facial mole removed.
It was not revealed when she had it removed, but Parker was first spotted without her signature mole on her chin in July 2008 when she attended a baseball game in New York. Her publicist originally denied that the actress had undergone cosmetic surgery.
But during the 44-year-old star's appearance on Letterman's show on Monday, she admitted to having the mole removed by a plastic surgeon brother-in-law.
When asked why she did it, she replied, "I just didn't care for it. And I had six free days when I can get bloody and scabbed and no one would care. And honestly, I didn't think a thing about it. And then apparently, it turned into a mole-gate."

A TV producer accused of trying to blackmail talkshow host David Letterman feared the star could burn his house down - or even kill him, according to newly released audio tapes. Robert 'Joe' Halderman was caught telling Letterman's lawyer that he was afraid of the presenter. 'I'm not sure how crazy this guy is, or um, how dangerous he might be,' Halderman, 52, said of Letterman, according to excerpts released by Manhattan prosecutors. 'So, just for safekeeping, I'm going to keep a copy of everything,' Halderman insisted during 'negotiations' with Letterman's lawyer - who was wearing a wiretap after he had told prosecutors about the alleged $2 million extortion plot. Prosecutors: 'Letterman's Alleged Blackmailer Made Intent Clear'

David Letterman's alleged extortionist made his intentions to ruin the U.S. talk show host's career and personal life "crystal clear" when he approached the star about his sexual exploits, prosecutors have argued.
TV producer Robert Halderman was charged with attempted first degree grand larceny in October after reportedly threatening to expose The Late Show presenter's affairs with employees unless Letterman paid $2 million (£1.25 million) to silence him."
Halderman, who was immediately suspended from his job as producer of CBS news show 48 Hours, claims he was simply selling the star a "screenplay proposal relating to Letterman's poor conduct".
But, in legal papers filed by New York prosecutors in a state court on Tuesday, Assistant District Attorneys Judy Salwen and Peirce Moser argue: "Defendant Halderman's threat was simple: Unless Mr. Letterman paid him two million dollars, defendant Halderman would make public information about a purported personal, sexual relationship between Mr. Letterman and his assistant."
The court documents also detailed Halderman's claims that he feared someone would try to harm him for trying to sell the story of Letterman's office affairs.
In secret recordings taped by police, Halderman said, "Should I be fired mysteriously... if my house burns down... any number of things... I have no idea... what he is capable of, someone might decide the only way to be sure I never talk to anybody is for somebody to kill me."
The case continues.
Halderman faces up to 15 years in prison if he is convicted of the grand larceny charge.

This morning, the New York Post published part of the conversations between Robert "Joe" Halderman and David Letterman's wire-wearing lawyer in November, when the two met to "negotiate" the terms of Halderman's screenplay based on the Late Show host's staffer affairs. Records reveal that Halderman planned to sign a confidentiality agreement but still hold onto all of his proof in the event that someone fire him, burn down his house or kill him: "As I said to you, the only way to be sure that I never talk to anybody is for somebody to kill me. Well, you know, I don't want that to happen." [Nyp]
