90 Playwrights and a Nikon: Susan Johann’s “Focus on Playwrights”

19 January 2017 7:16 PM, PST | www.culturecatch.com | See recent CultureCatch news »

"I'm the end of the line," Arthur Miller once asserted. "Absurd and appalling as it may seem, serious New York theater has died in my lifetime."

Many might argue otherwise. In fact, the best proof that theatre is still alive and kicking is Focus on Playwrights, the new coffee-table book, the cover of which showcases the life-crinkled face that once overlooked the birth of A View from the Bridge, All My Sons, and The Crucible. Yes, photographer Susan Johann’s scintillating collection of over 90 playwrights, whom she’s shot over 20 years -- and the inclusion of sharply revealing interviews with some of the same, is the best retort to anyone ready to cremate modern drama.

Some of those captured for publications such as Vogue and the New Yorker are now deceased (e.g. August Wilson, Edward Albee, and Joe Chaikin) while others are very much functioning (e.g. David Henry Hwang, »

46 Days Until "Feud"

18 January 2017 11:33 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

first promotional shot from Feud

The new Ryan Murphy anthology TV series' first eight-episode season, premieres on Sunday March 5th (yes exactly one week after the Oscars which seems very kind). The season looks at the legendarily bitchy Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) vs Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) wars. Two Oscar winners playing two Oscar winners. We're in!

We don't want to know too much ahead of time as that ruins so many TV shows and movies these days but it would be nice to have a leaked list of films referenced beyond Whatever Happened to Baby Jane (1962) so we could do a little revisiting of some key titles before the premiere, though it seems likely that the series will also cover the production of Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte (1964) given the character list in the credits. Jessica Lange doesn't look or feel much like Joan Crawford in face or persona which »

‘Feud’ Season 2? Ryan Murphy Jokes About Taylor Swift vs. Katy Perry

12 January 2017 2:29 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

FX’s latest anthology series “Feud” has yet to premiere, but television reporters are already asking Ryan Murphy about the theme for Season 2.

The first installment of feud, starring Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange, will center around Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. The eight-part seriespremieres on March 5.

Murphy says that he hasn’t put too much thought into brainstorming specific feuds for upcoming seasons, since the show hasn’t been picked up for a second season, let alone debuted. But, given that a renewal for “Feud” is very likely, Variety chatted with Murphy at Thursday’s Television Critics Association winter press tour.

“I will tell you I’ve called friends of mine that I’ve worked with. I called Mark Ruffalo, for example, and said, ‘Are there any famous feuds that you want to do? That you’re interested in?’ So I’ve just sort of reached out to some of my favorite people,” Murphy »

On the surface, “Feud” is about a woman vs. woman rivalry, but creator Ryan Murphy says the idea for the show actually came to him because of his progressive conversations with women in Hollywood.

FX’s latest anthology series “Feud” centers on the legendary backstage battle between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, played by Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon, respectively.

Murphy explained on Thursday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif., that he had “lots of discussions with women in the entertainment business … and what came out of that for me was a lot of very moving sentiments from women.”

And after those conversations, Murphy jumped into “Feud.”

“I wasn’t necessarily interested in doing anything campy,” Murphy continued. “I was interested in something deeper and more emotional and painful.”
