Movie Review: $9.99 (2008)

Jim Peck (Anthony Lapaglia) in the towel and Dave Peck (Samuel Johnson) in $9.99

Photo: Regent Releasing $9.99 is a curious little film that was put together under some particularly interesting circumstances. A New York-based independent filmmaker (Tatia Rosenthal) and an Israeli author (Etgar Keret) came together on a stop-motion animated feature produced as an Israeli-Australian co-production filmed in Australia, with post done in Israel, while using a worldy cast to voice the slice-of-life that is $9.99. Oh, did I mention it coincidentally makes use of nine animators? All of this ties into one peculiar animated feature as a varied group of characters search for the meaning of life amidst the pursuit of happiness. Best described as an urban fairy tale involving a group of people who all take up residence in a corner apartment building, $9.99 follows a young boy (voiced by Jamie Katsamatsas) who pines for a new toy, a man and »

Lapaglia Injured In Stunt Accident

1 October 2008 12:24 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Australian actor Anthony Lapaglia was reportedly injured on-set of his latest movie Balibo after a stunt went badly wrong.

The Without A Trace star was hurt after an explosive device discharged into his arm during a scene in which Lapaglia's character is shot.

The device, which creates an authentic gun-shot sound, exploded into Lapaglia's arm instead of firing outwards, which would have looked on camera as if the star had been shot.

The star, who is filming in Darwin, was taken to nearby Royal Darwin Hospital to receive medical treatment, according to Australia's Northern Territory News.

A source tells the publication, "It was the scene where East (Lapaglia's character) was going to get shot. They put the explosives on back-to-front.'' »

Tiff announces more titles for Vanguard, Visions and Discovery

14 August 2008 3:56 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced a whole load of films, including many world premiers, to be added as part of their lineups. Some of the more interesting looking ones are Lance Daly's Kisses about two Irish kids who run away from home and deal with the dark underside of Dublin. Another film I'm definitely interested in is Scott McGehee and David Siegel's Uncertainty which stars one of my personal favorites, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's about a couple in love who find out she's pregnant and they flip a coin from where it apparently follows both possible storylines, but with the same disastrous consequences. Also screening will be Fabrice du Welz's Vinyan (trailer here) which is about a couple who lost their son in a Tsunami and won't give up looking for him. In the Discovery program, the stop-motion animation $9.99 which is about a man seeking the meaning to life. »

Lapaglia Considered For Soprano Movie

23 June 2008 6:20 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Without A Trace star Anthony Lapaglia almost got a second chance to play Tony Soprano when The Sopranos writers considered a film-within-a-tv show for the series' final season.

Australian Lapaglia was one of the first actors considered as the Soprano family leader before the role went to James Gandolfini.

But, in a new interview with show creator David Chase for an upcoming final season DVD, the writer reveals Lapaglia was considered again as the star of a spin-off movie about Tony Soprano.

In the DVD special interview, Chase tells interviewer and Sopranos fan Alec Baldwin that he and producers dabbled with the idea of Soprano's psychologist, played by Lorraine Bracco, writing a book about her encounters with the mob boss.

Lapaglia would have played Soprano in the movie adaptation. »
