'Some Freaks': Fantasia Review

4 August 2017 11:17 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

An affecting debut for anyone who has dwelled on the far outskirts of adolescent social life, Ian MacAllister McDonald's Some Freaks captures high school/college agony without transmuting it into thank-God-we-survived-it nostalgia. Starring Thomas Mann (lead in the tragically underseen Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) and charismatic relative newcomer Lily Mae Harrington, the picture centers on misfits struggling to understand whether their "flaws" are things to overcome or essential to their identities. Neil Labute's appearance as an exec-producer will tell prospective viewers something about the film's willingness to grapple with cruelty in intimate settings. But McDonald never delights in »

While in San Diego last weekend at Comic-Con, Daily Dead briefly spoke with Ghost Wars executive producer Dennis Heaton during a press event for the show, and he chatted about creating a supernatural series that can stand out amongst its peers, his experiences working with Syfy, putting together the cast of Ghost Wars, and more.

So, based on the trailer, this looks a little bit different than what we may be expecting. I don't know what a typical supernatural show is, but it seems like there’s more than just some ghosts going on in this.

Dennis Heaton: Yeah, it's a pretty atypical supernatural show. It was one of the things, »

Van Helsing adds Missy Peregrym as Scarlett Harker

15 March 2017 2:51 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

SyFy’s Van Helsing has just added a new member to the cast for its second season: Canadian actress Missy Peregyrm (Rookie Blue) is joining as a series regular and will play Scarlett Harker, a woman with mysterious ties to vampires and could possibly aid in Vanessa Helsing’s battle against them.

Van Helsing is a modern reimagining of the vampire hunter which sees Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton), a distant relative of Dracula hunter Abraham Van Helsing, resurrected years after her death in a world where vampires have taken over. Awakened in this new nightmare, Vanessa leads a resistance against the vampiric rule and aims to cleanse the world of vampires.

“We are so lucky and happy to have Missy join the Van Helsing team this season” said Neil Labute, Van Helsing‘s showrunner. “The series thrives on female energy & power and we’re getting two barrels full with Missy’s talents. »

The 24 Most Important Vampire TV Shows Ever, Ranked

Today is the 20th anniversary of the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” premiere, and the day that “The Vampire Diaries” airs its series finale — a day sure to go down in broadcast history as Vampire TV Day.

But those two shows are far from the only ones to depict bloodsuckers (to use a pejorative term) on screen, and IndieWire has dusted off the TV crypt to unearth a ranker of our favorite fangs.

Yes, we know there’s a lot at stake here.

Catfight review – punches and punchlines in bloody black comedy

9 March 2017 2:45 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Sandra Oh and Anne Heche play college frenemies who come to blows in a dark satire that will have you in stitches

Here’s something to remind you that, however the debate currently stands, believably real violence is still pretty rare in the movies, and so the violence in this black comedy by the New York-based indie film-maker Onur Tukel is, in its way, startling and quite shocking. It is a vignette of extended nastiness that reminded me of something by Neil Labute, all about a fight between two women. The title both announces and pre-empts the possibility of our voyeurism. It is set in a sketchily imagined satire-future, where a new war on terror has been announced in the Us.

Sandra Oh is Veronica, an obnoxious trophy wife married to a wealthy military contractor. She is appalled at her teenage son’s ambitions to be an artist. With a shudder, »
