'The Office' series finale: John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer close out once-in-a-lifetime experience

16 May 2013 3:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

When Jenna Fischer was a little girl, she loved watching the hit NBC sitcom "Cheers" with her family and fantasizing about how much fun it would be to work as a member of a TV comedy ensemble like that. As luck would have it, that dream came true for her when she landed the plum role of Pam Beesly (later Halpert) on "The Office," the long-running comedy that finishes its nine-year run on the Peacock network with a one-hour finale on Thursday, May 16.

On that same night, when NBC begins an hour-long special that immediately precedes the final "Office" episode, Fischer will be making her New York theater debut in a much-anticipated work by A-list playwright Neil Labute, a career milestone any actress would covet -- and she knows she never would have gotten it without the years she put in at Dunder Mifflin, the fictional Scranton, Pa., paper company »

Casting: Neil Labute Enlists Ethan Hawke, Vera Farmiga For New Thriller; Logan Lerman Joins Brad Pitt For ‘Fury’

6 May 2013 4:06 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Logan Lerman might be known for the forgettable “Percy Jackson” films (a sequel arrives this summer), but he almost scored the coveted lead in “The Amazing Spider-Man” a few years ago and he impressed with his acting chops in “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower.” Casting directors and filmmakers have noticed. He’s getting called up into the big leagues and will join Brad Pitt and Shia Labeouf in the WWII tank thriller “Fury” that “End of Watch” filmmaker David Ayer is writing and directing for Sony Pictures. The movie is already set for a Fall 2014 release and it’s an interesting one because it will be Ayer’s first non police-centered movie. Let’s hope unlike the almost great “End Of Watch,” the visual material doesn’t stand in the way of a good story and strong dynamic. 'Some Girl(s)' trailer: Adam Brody is a Man with a (bad) plan -- Exclusive Video

6 May 2013 11:17 AM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Playwright Neil Labute is notorious for dredging the dark depths of the male psyche, and Some Girl(s) goes so far as to name its protagonist, if that’s the right word, merely as “Man.” In the movie, which premiered at SXSW in March, Adam Brody (The O.C.) plays the Man, a successful writer who thinks the best way to prep for his imminent wedding is a cross-country jaunt to reconnect with a quintet of his former lovers — Jennifer Morrison, Mía Maestro, Emily Watson, Zoe Kazan and Kristen Bell — to resolve old wounds. Or not.

Hurt People Hurt People: Neil Labute & Alice Eve On The Intricate Roleplaying Of ‘Some Velvet Morning’

3 May 2013 9:03 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Since his award-winning debut feature “In the Company of Men” in 1997, Neil Labute has developed a diverse career that spans writing and directing for both the stage and screen. Depicting unsettling and often cruel relationships between men and women, his work can be difficult to stomach, but there is no denying his unique voice. Over the years, Labute has experimented with directing other people’s work, venturing into the horror (“The Wicker Man”), thriller (“Lakeview Terrace”) and comedy (“Nurse Betty,” “Death at a Funeral”) genres, to varying degrees of critical success. At the same time, he is a prolific playwright, with “The Mercy Seat,” “Fat Pig,” “reasons to be pretty,” and “The Shape of Things,” among others, making theatrical waves. Labute’s latest film, “Some Velvet Morning,” had its world premiere at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival. Starring (only) Stanley Tucci (“The Hunger Games,” “The Devil Wears Prada”) and Alice Eve (“She's Out Of Your League, »

Casting Net: Jessica Chastain in talks to join Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar', more

2 May 2013 6:39 PM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) is reportedly in talks to join Christopher Nolan’s (The Dark Knight Rises) time-travel epic, Interstellar. She’d be joining a cast that currently includes Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey. Since she’s started getting more significant roles, Chastain has never really ventured into pure science fiction territory (we’re not counting Take Shelter). She famously dropped out of Oblivion when offered the Zero Dark Thirty role, so we’re excited for her to take on a new kind of film. The two-time Oscar nominee (The Help, Zero Dark Thirty) is currently filming Liv Ullmann »

The story follows two small time crooks (Hawke and Harris) who are keeping a low profile in a Baja resort after a heist goes wrong.

When they meet two women holidaying together (Farmiga and Devos), sparks fly romantically but tension builds when a large amount of cash is found in their room.

Tribeca 2013: ‘Some Velvet Morning’ is a frustrating film in ways both good and bad

26 April 2013 10:02 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Some Velvet Morning

USA, 2013

Written and Directed by Neil Labute

Like much of Neil Labute’s work, Some Velvet Morning takes on a highly discomforting situation and pushes it to extremes.  It is a frustrating film in ways both good and bad. Labute’s execution of a two-person drama is a painstaking exercise in building anxiety, but as the tension slows ramps up, some minds are bound to wander.

Fred (Stanley Tucci) appears on Velvet’s (Alice Eve) doorstep one morning with an armful of luggage in tow.  He announces that he has finally left his wife in order to be with her, a prospect Velvet appears less than thrilled about.  What follows is a nasty contest of words and wills, one from which Velvet simply wants to extricate herself and Fred wants to resolve with dirty sex.

Over the course of their dispute, we learn that the lovers’ affair ended years ago, »

TV Shingle Takes Unusual Tack With Neil Labute DirecTV Series

26 April 2013 3:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Producer Nick Hamm convinced playwright Neil Labute to create his first TV series by offering the lure of a low budget and a quick-and-dirty production cycle for an emerging premium channel. What’s not to like?

To Hamm, who heads L.A.-based Momentum Television, the birthing process for Labute’s “Full Circle” is an example of everything that is great about the unruly state of the content biz.

“We are living through the digital equivalent of the industrial revolution,” he said.

The Labute series earned an order for 10 half-hour episodes from DirecTV’s Audience Network. Momentum TV is part of Momentum Entertainment, owned by ad giant Interpublic Group.

Hamm, a seasoned film and legit director-producer, was recruited in late 2011 to launch a boutique production unit for programs that lend themselves to brand integration opportunities for clients of Ipg-owned agencies. The company’s first series, “Rogue,” bowed on Audience Network this month. »

Neil Labute on Some Velvet Morning, French New Wave, and Wicker Man

25 April 2013 8:15 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Neil Labute's Some Velvet Morning premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this week, returning the writer-director to his more independent, dialogue-driven roots after a string of studio movies, including the notoriously bad Wicker Man remake, left fans scratching their heads. Velvet stars Stanley Tucci as Fred, a married man who shows up, bags packed, at the home of his former mistress (Alice Eve) four years after the two split up. It takes place entirely in one location and is another of Labute’s remarkably dark and barbed explorations of the war between the sexes. We sat down with him to talk about the new film, his fondness for French New Wave, and, yes, Wicker Man.You shot this in eight days. Is that the shortest time in which you’ve ever done a film?Yeah, In the Company of Men was eleven days. Of the four films that people »

Tff 2013: Some Velvet Morning Review

23 April 2013 3:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

To say Some Velvet Morning is a different sort of film is an understatement.  Its director, Neil Labute has maintained his status as a provacateur,  ‘sit has characters that make you want to reach through the screen and choke to death, and a premise that doesn’t evoke any particular interest.  Yet somehow, it’s one of the best films I’ve seen this year.

On a beautiful sunny morning, Velvet’s doorbell rings.  When she opens her door to greet whomever is there, she discovers Fred.  Fred is a former lover of Velvet’s whom she hasn’t spoken with in 4 years.  He’s left his wife and wants to rekindle the flame between them that has long been extinguished, but there is more to their relationship than meets the eye.

There is something inherently charming about Some Velvet Morning.  The film takes place in one apartment, with only two characters. »

Tribeca Review: Neil Labute Goes Back To Basics In Spartan, Scintillating 'Some Velvet Morning'

22 April 2013 7:01 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

When filmmakers find themselves in a rough place, they tend to dial back their productions, usually by necessity, but also as a refresher course in refueling the creative spirit. Playwright Neil Labute has had a rough go of it in his last few big-screen adventures: "Lakeview Terrace" was a half-baked contemporary thriller clearly made to fill the personal coffers, though one could argue it reflected an intriguing take on contemporary race relations in suburban communities. And remaking "Death At A Funeral" nearly shot-for-shot was always going to be a thankless task. The fact that these two films followed the misunderstood-but-still-questionable "Wicker Man" remake seems to point to a creative force in decline, at least onscreen -- Labute remains active in the world of shorts and stage, where his reputation has yet to be sullied. Now Labute returns with "Some Velvet Morning," and it's as stripped-down as a testy night off Broadway. »

DirecTV Orders 10 Episodes of 'Full Circle,' an Original Drama Series From Neil Labute

19 April 2013 6:55 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

DirecTV premiered its first original scripted series "Rogue," an undercover cop drama starring Thandie Newton, on April 3. Now the satellite provider is upping its original programming game with "Full Circle," another scripted series, this one the television debut of Neil Labute. DirecTV's ordered 10 episodes of "Full Circle," a high concept half-hour series Labute created, is writing and will co-executive produce to air on DirecTV's exclusive Audience Network in the fall of 2013. The show is based on Arthur Schnitzler's classic play "La Ronde," which daisy-chained ten pairs of lovers up and down the social classes in ten scenes, starting and ending with the Whore. "La Ronde" has been much abused in recent film, with Fernando Meirelles' "360" and Alexis Lloyd's "30 Beats" attempting none-too-successfully to use the narrative format in a contemporary setting.
