Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga’s ‘Star Is Born’ Moves to May 2018

22 September 2017 11:30 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Warner Bros.’ “A Star Is Born” remake starring Stefani Germanotta (Lady Gaga) and Bradley Cooper, who is also directing, is moving up its release to May 18, 2018.

The pic was originally set to open Sept. 28, 2018 but the studio sees it as a strong counter-programming move by putting it in the midst of summer tentpoles. The studio pulled a similar move when it pushed its “Great Gatsby” remake starring Leonardo DiCaprio from December to May, which worked in its favor as the film went to gross more then $300 million worldwide. The film will go up against an untitled Laika production and Screen Gems’ “Slenderman” pic.

Cooper will play Jackson Maine, a country music star who discovers a talented unknown named Ally (Germanotta). As Ally’s career quickly eclipses his own, Jack struggles to accept that his best days may be behind him, putting a strain on their budding romance.

Previous versions of the film include the 1937 film with Fredric March »

An Audience with the Killer: Jerry Lee Lewis Talks the Road, Drag Racing with Elvis and the Meaning of Rock ‘n’ Roll

21 August 2017 1:35 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

There are men and then there are myths. Jerry Lee Lewis is the latter. The rock pioneer first set the charts ablaze in 1957 with twin dynamos “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On,” and 60 years on he’s still pounding the keys before packed houses across the country. With the death of Chuck Berry in March—and Little Richard and Fats Domino largely retired—Lewis is the last of the great rock ‘n’ rollers still conjuring the sounds of long nights in long gone Delta juke joints. His colleagues at the seminal Memphis label Sun Records, including Elvis Presley, »

Sinéad O’Connor’s Struggle: Inside the ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ Singer’s Tumultuous Ups and Downs

9 August 2017 5:15 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Sinéad O’Connor achieved pop culture immortality with a soulful cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U” that built on the pain and vulnerability of Prince’s original, but the tears shed in the iconic video weren’t just for show. The ethereal voice and wounded eyes masked a past marred by child abuse, incarcerations, and tragedy, and those inner demons followed her through the gilded door of fame and haunt her to this day.

They ultimately led her to a New Jersey Travelodge, where she lived a solitary existence away from family in her native Ireland, whom she claims couldn’t cope with her mental illnesses. »

Mike Gold: My Timey-Wimey Toddlin’ Town

9 August 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Well, last Sunday my pal John Ostrander did a lovely and quite informative column around his inability to come up with a topic. And tomorrow, my pal Denny O’Neil has an equally interesting column addressing the same basic issue. So, damn, I’d look pretty lame if I pulled the same stunt today, wouldn’t I?

Yeah, I know. I should be used to that.

So, instead of impressing you with my astonishing ability to wax on for 591 words about how there’s an echo chamber between my ears – it’s August; there’s supposed to be an echo chamber between my ears… or, at least, the Attica! chant – I’m going to write up a couple of paragraphs about a comic book show I’ll be doing in 15 days. Stream of consciousness, to paraphrase Kris Kristofferson, means you have nothing left to lose.

Film Review: ‘Hickok’

6 July 2017 2:10 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As Hollywood has more or less given up on conventional westerns as mass-audience magnets, diehard fans of the genre have come to rely on a steady stream — or, at the very least, a consistent trickle — of small-budget, independently produced oaters to satisfy their appetite for old-fashioned sagebrush sagas. “Hickok,” the latest example of its unabashedly retrograde subgenre (the shoot-’em-up variety), contains a few elements — earthy language, fleeting nudity — that might trouble those purists who still pine for westerns of a more innocent era. But less censorious aficionados likely will be willing to look past the rough edges and enjoy the simple pleasures provided by a respectfully sincere retelling of a familiar legend.

At the center of this particular story is James Butler Hickok, a.k.a. Wild Bill Hickok, the Old West icon who inspired numerous legends — and, later, countless movies and TV dramas — with his exploits as a lawman, gambler »

Exclusive: 'Westworld' Star Luke Hemsworth Finally Gets to Play the Cowboy in 'Hickok'

6 July 2017 10:15 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Luke Hemsworth is finally getting to play the cowboy.

The 36-year-old actor stars in his first leading role in a feature film as the titular character in Hickok. It's a career milestone for the older brother of Chris and Liam Hemsworth, but it seems the allure of the project had less to do with a transition to leading man, and more with childhood dreams left unfulfilled by his character on HBO’s Westworld.

"I never get to play the cowboy with guns in Westworld!" Hemsworth jokingly complains to Et. On the sci-fi drama, the actor plays security guard Ashley Stubbs, who gets to wield a gun but not like the guests living out their Wild West dreams in the park do. "So [Hickok] was a good chance for me to live the boyhood dream of gunslinging."

Newswire: Bradley Cooper films A Star Is Born scenes before Kris Kristofferson’s Glastonbury set

26 June 2017 7:24 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Two generations of A Star Is Born collided at Glastonbury Friday when, according to Billboard, Bradley Cooper appeared on stage to shoot scenes before a set from Kris Kristofferson. Cooper—who is also directing the remake starring Lady Gaga—is playing a role equivalent to the one that Kristofferson took on in the 1976 version of the story. (If only James Mason and Frederic March could have been around to see this.)

Cooper appeared to jammed out pretty hard—as you can see from the photo above—but NME notes that the audience could not hear what he was playing. So patrons got a silent show before Cooper introduced Kristofferson himself, saying, per Billboard, “You guys were awesome, that was great—it’s my sheer pleasure to introduce Kris Kristofferson.” The 81-year-old’s performance eventually featured a cameo from Johnny Depp—who has already used Glastonbury as an opportunity to »

Happy Birthday, Bob Dylan! The Music Legend’s 10 Best Film Performances

24 May 2017 10:54 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Bob Dylan turns 76 today and we’re ranking Dylan’s 10 best film performances, dating back half a century to 1967. The key word is “performances,” which encompass acting work, concert films, and documentaries. It’s often hard to know when Dylan is acting and when he’s being himself (whoever that is), but whenever the iconic singer-songwriter appears on film, one thing’s for certain: you’re watching a performance.

Bob Dylan’s ‘Don’t Look Back’ Gets Deluxe Treatment With New Blu-ray Set

For this reason, we’re lumping everything together, ranking the films based on the depth and richness of performance. It was hard not to include the televised 1965 press conference in San Francisco, which sees Dylan effortlessly (and hilariously) shoot down reporters’ attempts to have him label himself, but we limited this list to feature-length films.
