'Orphan' Star Isabelle Fuhrman To Lead David Gordon Green's 'Suspiria' Remake

15 May 2012 5:03 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We're about to move towards yet another act of David Gordon Green's career. The filmmaker started off with "George Washington," "All The Real Girls" and "Undertow" as a possible heir to Terrence Malick's meditative indie throne, but took a severe left-turn about five years back into abrasive stoner comedy, a shift which had both its successes ("Pineapple Express," "Eastbound & Down") and failures ("Your Highness," "The Sitter"). But for now, it seems, the director is about to try something new, and move into the horror world for his long-gestating remake of Dario Argento's horror classic "Suspiria."

And on the back of recent news that the film was financed, and moving towards a shoot in September, it looks like the director has his lead. Back in the day, the project was intended to star Natalie Portman, but between her Oscar victory for the similarly-themed "Black Swan" and her new motherhood, »

The Films Of Richard Linklater: A Retrospective

2 May 2012 9:37 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Given that he's one of the more diverse and prolific filmmakers out there, it's been a disappointingly long four years without a new movie from Richard Linklater ("Me and Orson Welles" premiered at Tiff in 2008). Fortunately, the Austin, Texas-based filmmaker is back with "Bernie," a dark comedy which reunites him with two of his most memorable leads, Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey, that has picked up strong reviews and, opening in limited release last Friday, has been performing surprisingly well at the box office.

With "Bernie" expanding wider this weekend (read our review), it seemed like the perfect time to look over Linklater's diverse and eclectic career. He'd already made his mark by founding the Austin Film Society in 1985 (which has gone on to be the center of the industy in the Texas city), but since his debut with an ultra-low-budget student film in 1988, Linklater's tackled everything from romance to »

The top 10 Keanu Reeves movies that aren’t The Matrix

2 May 2012 6:26 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Aside from Neo in The Matrix, what are Keanu Reeves’ finest roles? Here, Luke lists the ten other Reeves movies that deserve your attention...

Depending on your personal views on the man, Keanu Reeves is either the epitome of what can be achieved with determination, gumption and graft, or one lucky, lucky swine.

His detractors are always quick to pounce because, yes, he’s never boasted a particularly diverse dramatic range and, yes, he never really got his accents together, but he’s also managed to etch out a career whose breadth and length is the envy of hordes of actors with more ‘conventionally recognised’ acting chops. That’s not to say Reeves’ oeuvre (yes, oeuvre) doesn’t contain some profound old sod-plank – it most certainly does - yet said chunderguff has always been liberally counter-weighted by more than his fair share of cheeky little corkers.

So, before we examine »

Lily Collins interview: I'm not doing this for fame

10 April 2012 2:03 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Growing up the daughter of a pop star, the actor was always going to be in the spotlight. Here she talks about her rapid Hollywood rise – and why she'd never have been happy as a socialite

Lily Collins, actor and daughter of Genesis frontman Phil, settles among the dark woods and sinking velvets of an annoyingly hip hotel in Paris and sighs, then apologises immediately. She has flown here straight from the set of her next film – Writers, in which she stars alongside Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connelly – and there was no direct flight from North Carolina. Still, if the 23-year-old is jetlagged she doesn't look it. In the flesh she's all porcelain skin, raven hair and red lips – an excellent embodiment of Snow White if ever you saw one. Which is just as well, because Mirror Mirror, the film whose premiere she is attending, sees her play a ballsy, »

Why Lily Collins Is the Next Big Thing

29 March 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

She's one of the busiest young actresses in Hollywood, scoring choice parts like that of the iconic Snow White in "Mirror Mirror" as well as several other high-profile roles. But just who is Lily Collins, and why is she so hot right now?

"Lily Collins is a film producer’s dream -- cute, talented and level-headed," says Amy Wilkinson, editor of the film blog at Hollywood Crush. "I doubt you’ll ever read a story about Collins having an on-set tantrum or meltdown. The question is: Who wouldn’t want to work with a poised, intelligent young actress?"

Let's take a look at some of the reasons Collins is getting so much play these days.

She was born and bred to be in the spotlight.

Collins is showbiz progeny, born in England to legendary musician Phil Collins and his second wife, Jill Tavelman. After her parents' divorce when she was a pre-schooler, »

The strange phenomenon of the deteriorating late-night movie

26 March 2012 9:04 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Have you ever stayed up late to watch a movie you know nothing about, only to watch it worsen before your eyes? We highlight a weird TV phenomenon...

As our article about great post-pub movies demonstrates, we’re not averse to watching movies after the witching hour, especially if we may have already enjoyed a beer or two. And with the wealth of cable and digital channels available, there’s always a wealth of movies to choose from at around midnight, whichever night of the week it is - for some reason, the films of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone appear to be on constant rotation on certain channels.

Now and again, though, we’ll forgo our addiction to such classics as Red Heat or Rambo: First Blood Part II (films that, thanks to the rotation mentioned above, mean we’ve seen bits of them well over a dozen times »

It's a good week for … Guest stars

9 March 2012 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

When you're young, nothing's worse than a guest star appearing on a show you love – especially an only-famous-in-America guest star on an American sitcom – because it essentially involves hearing a studio audience whoop at a stranger. But now perhaps we're all better placed to appreciate a good cameo, which is fortunate because we're about to be beaten around the chops with them all week.

For example, Weeds (Mon, 10.20pm, Sky Atlantic) has just begun its gradual transformation into Will & Grace, as it replaces everything that people loved about the show with an endless parade of desperate-eyed celebrity guest spots. This week, Richard Dreyfuss dances around to try to stop everyone from realising that the show is at least two years past its best. He doesn't literally dance, by the way. He's in his 60s.

Elsewhere, Ken Jenkins makes another appearance on Cougar Town (Fri, 8.30pm, Sky Living) as Courteney Cox's dad, »

Kristen Bell, Lily Collins, Logan Lerman and Others Added to Cast of ‘Writers’; Stephen King Making Cameo

8 March 2012 11:13 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Variety reports that Writers, a drama which set Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connelly in the lead roles back in January, has staked out the rest of its primary cast — and, to the surprise of yours truly, it’s actually pretty solid. In no particular order, Kristen Bell, Lily Collins, Logan Lerman, Nat Wolff, Liana Liberato, Rusty Joiner, and Patrick Schwarzenegger (his dad is famous) are throwing their acting hats into the ring for writer-director Josh Boone. Stephen King is making a cameo, too, hopefully to recite one of those Entertainment Weekly articles about how he hates cycling through channels on his TV.

Telling “the stories of family members and their love interests over the course of one tumultuous year,” Kinnear will star as “a famous novelist obsessed with his ex-wife (Connelly),” while Collins will play “their collegiate daughter who’s pursued by a fellow writing student (Lerman)”; Wolff will appear »

Assuming that you did not see "Abduction" and you're not really into "Mirror, Mirror," don't despair! There might actually be a Lily Collins film that piques your interest. The actress has signed onto the upcoming family dramedy, "Writers," starring Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connelly. From newcomer Josh Boone, the film follows a literary celebrity (Kinnear) who is still hung up on his ex-wife (Connelly). Collins stars as their college-aged daughter, who -- like mother, like daughter -- is lusted after by her aspiring-writer schoolmate, played by Logan Lerman. The film weaves together the narratives of each family members over the course of a year. Nat Wolff, Liana Liberato and Kristen Bell have also joined the cast; Bell will take up the role as Kinnear's friend who tries to help him move on from his breakup. 'Happy Endings' recap: Forgive and forget'ems

8 March 2012 5:45 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It feels odd to be disappointed in an episode of Happy Endings that referenced the likes of Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Inception, but after last week’s great “Cocktails & Dreams”, last night’s “The Kerkovich Way” felt a little bit lost.

For that I reluctantly blame Max and Penny’s surprisingly lackluster storyline, which despite having aces like Adam Pally and Casey Wilson at the helm and an awesome cameo by Ferris Bueller’s high-flying parking lot attendant Richard Edson, the whole thing relied too heavily on silly sight gags and an ultimately ho-hum Penny rivalry. »
