‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Deserves to Win the VFX Oscar

‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Deserves to Win the VFX Oscar
The time has come for the Academy to finally give the VFX Oscar to “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Twice denied for “Rise” and “Dawn,” Weta Digital’s remarkable work on Caesar (Andy Serkis) culminated with a Shakespearean finale. It’s undeniably the best of the field. And coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the original “Planet of the Apes” would make it even sweeter. The Visual Effects Society obviously got the importance of the work, honoring the entire Caesar trilogy, now we’ll see if the Academy makes amends with “War.”

However, “Apes” has been denied before (with the acting branch, in particular, having a bias against Serkis and performance capture) and there is other noteworthy character animation to choose from, including the stunning CG Rachael from “Blade Runner 2049,” the creepy Snoke (Serkis) from “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Ego and the de-aged Kurt Russell from

Although he expects to get some feces hurled at him, Gold Derby contributor Charles Bright expresses his dissatisfaction at James Franco‘s Best Actor Oscar snub for “The Disaster Artist” in our recent webcam slugfest (watch the video above). “That performance is so central to everything that is so wonderful about that movie,” he states. Long thought to be a frontrunner after winning the Golden Globe as Best Comedy/Musical Actor, Franco found himself left out in the cold when the Academy Award nominations were announced on Tuesday. Did allegations of sexual misconduct, dropped days before voting ended, stop his campaign dead in its tracks? Bright joins contributors Riley Chow, Kevin Jacobson, and Zach Laws to hash that out along with all the other surprises in the four acting categories.

Oscars flashback: Iraq invasion in 2003 almost cancelled 75th anniversary Oscars family album reunion of 59 acting winners [Watch]

The 75th anniversary ceremony for the Academy Awards almost didn’t happen as scheduled. When America led an invasion of Iraq that weekend, broadcast network ABC pleaded with producer Gil Cates and Academy president Frank Piersen to move the event back a week. The duo claimed it would be too expensive to make the switch and that the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood would be unavailable.

On March 23, 2003, the ceremony went live on ABC as scheduled, hosted by comedian, actor, and writer Steve Martin, with the Best Picture proclaimed to be “Chicago.” However, several presenters such as Cate Blanchett, Jim Carrey, and Will Smith cancelled their appearances. That day’s events also caused several past winners to bail out on appearing in the Oscars family album slated for late in the show. Similar to a segment five years early for the 70th anniversary show (read more on the link above), the
