Natalie Haynes's guide to TV detectives: #7 – Dr Mark Sloan

Diagnosis Murder's Dick Van Dyke is a roller-skating, barbershop-singing global treasure

Before we go any further, let me just explain that this blog will be longer than usual, because Diagnosis Murder is, without any trace of competition, my favourite detective show of all time, bar none, ever. I like it so much that the theme music (by the ever-excellent Dick DeBenedictis – imagine being responsible for the themes of Diagnosis Murder and Perry Mason, and not being an actual saint. Weird) is the ringtone on my phone. Even bad news sounds good when prefaced by that cheery clarinet.

I like the show so much that I am replacing my glass of water on a Diagnosis Murder coaster in between typing sentences (yes, I have four. And they were a Valentine's gift. Envy me). I like it so much that I have a signed photo over my desk of Dick Van Dyke »

Review: Tarzan Season One

5 April 2012 10:22 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

September 8, 1966 was a pretty big night of television for fans of the fantastic. NBC ran a sneak peek of several new shows a week prior to the formal premiere of the prime time season. At 7:30, Ron Ely first swung on a vine across trees as Tarzan while an hour later, Captain James T. Kirk confronted the Salt Vampire on the first airing of Star Trek. While the latter has gone on to great international fame, the former series has always been somewhat eclipsed.

Warner Archive, bless their souls, has rectified that by releasing the complete first season of the two season series. You can find the first fifteen episodes on four discs comprising Tarzan Season One, Volume One while the remaining sixteen episodes are available in the second volume. Warner has done a nice job cleaning the prints and the show looks pretty darn good.

Wamg Interview: Julie Adams – Star of Creature From The Black Lagoon

19 March 2012 5:42 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

She.ll always be best known as Kay Lawrence, the beauty that the Gillman falls in love with the moment he spies her swimming above him in Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954). Mimicking her movements in the water, the Creature performs a lustful underwater mating dance . he.s directly beneath her but she’s unaware of his amorous overtures in the murky depths of the river. It.s a desire most men (and monster kids) could relate to and Julie Adams is the actress who will always be fondly remembered as the .girl in the white one-piece..

Born Betty May Adams and raised near Little Rock Arkansas, Julie was bit by the acting bug early and moved to California to become an actress. She worked as a secretary to support herself and spent her free time taking speech lessons and making the rounds at the various movie studio casting departments. »

TV Review: FX’s New Animated Series ‘Unsupervised’ Offers Fresh Take on Teens

19 January 2012 7:47 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It’s tough being a high school freshman nowadays. Your parents either don’t pay enough attention to you or they pay way too much. There’s peer pressure everywhere — smoking, partying, getting laid. What happened to just playing with toys and jumping off the roof? FX’s “Unsupervised” attempts to turn these tumultuous days into humor and partially succeeds. Tonight’s premiere has its moments but it follows an amazing half-hour of animated TV in “Archer” and will pale in comparison.

Television Rating: 3.0/5.0

Let’s talk about what really matters — is “Unsupervised” funny? There are undeniably clever lines and smile-producing twists of character well-voiced by an extremely talented cast of actors. But great animated comedies are more than just a string of jokes — they come together on another level in terms of plot and character. Mediocre animated comedies are joke, set-up, joke, set-up, joke, etc. While there’s »
