Is BBC One's Last Tango in Halifax coming to an end?

29 July 2015 4:18 PM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

The final dance for Last Tango in Halifax might be upon us.

Sir Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid's romantic comedy series is confirmed to be returning for a fourth series, but apparently is not likely to continue beyond that point.

"This will be our fourth run and I think that will be enough," Reid told TV Times. "Derek and I said we'd only do two series but people love it.

"I'm happy to film another but I hate it when programmes go on too long and become a pale imitation of the original."

As for how the series should end, Reid said: "I don't want anybody dying… I want something life-affirming!"

Last Tango in Halifax stars Jacobi and Reid as childhood sweethearts who reunite in their 70s through Facebook.

The BBC One show has won three BAFTA Awards since its premiere in November 2012. »

Dominic Cooper Recruited For Stratton

9 July 2015 3:02 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Simon West and the team making action thriller Stratton had an unpleasant surprise at the end of May when Henry Cavill, who had developed the idea and was set to star, dropped out thanks to creative differences about the script. After a quick search, the film has a replacement leading man in Dominic Cooper, plus additional casting in the shape of Tom FeltonAustin Stowell, Gemma Chan, Tyler Hoechlin, Thomas Kretschmann, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen and Jake Fairbrother. Though the cameras were originally due to roll last month, a quick schedule shift means it’ll all kick off next week in Italy. Cooper is aboard to play a Special Boat Service operative who must join forces with MI6 to prevent a terrorist attack. West, for one, seems fine with the new faces for the film. “Dominic Cooper’s talent, versatility and his originality as an actor, provide the perfect fit »

TV Review: ‘Last Tango in Halifax,’ Season 3

26 June 2015 7:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Before Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie” made headlines by daring to pair seventysomething leads in a sitcom, there was “Last Tango in Halifax,” and for that matter, “Vicious,” both PBS series starring the indefatigable Derek Jacobi. “Last Tango” returns for its third season, having drifted somewhat from the spark that initially made the show so bracing, becoming a more conventional family soap, albeit still with wonderful moments. Still pleasant enough, one can feel series creator Sally Wainwright laboring a bit, having brought her adorable leads together, as she conjures excuses to drive wedges between them.

Just as a refresher, Alan (Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid) were sweet on each other as teenagers, only to be separated for 60 years. Both widowed, they were reunited in the first season, with their unlikely romance having a ripple effect on everyone around them, including their grown daughters.

Vicious returns for series 2: Have your say on ITV's divisive sitcom

1 June 2015 1:30 PM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Vicious is back - ITV's divisive sitcom returned tonight, over two years since it first split both critics and the public.

Launching to a solid 5.78m viewers in April 2013, the show experienced a drop-off in viewership across its six episodes - but levelled out at around the 2.5-2.8m mark.

Reaction from viewers was more volatile, however - comedian Barry Cryer even branded Vicious "positively homophobic".

Star Ian McKellen admitted there was some room for improvement, but defended the show from accusations of homophobia, while ITV's then-Commissioning Editor of Comedy, Myfanwy Moore described the first as a "learning curve" - but added that she was "really proud" of what it had achieved.

ITV aired a Christmas special and confirmed a second series in late 2013, while creator Gary Janetti has also been talking up a possible third run - but would you watch?
